Rory’s pov

"Dad, I was called a monster today." Niko said as soon as he trudged into the house behind a worried looking Anna. I was on FaceTime with a few of my staff snc had thankfully muted the call as soon as the kid’s arrived. My eyes instantly widened and I told thr staff that I’d get back to them later, and then I got up to meet Niko and Anna, a worried expression already across my face.

"What? Who said that?" I asked, feeling my heart fly up onto my throat. The warm, watery scent of Niko smelt burnt and unhappy and I frowned when he averted his gaze, staring down at his twirling hands. I glanced over at Anna who still had a worried expression on.

"Honey, did something happen?" I asked and Anna pursed her lips for a moment, and then she bursted into tears. My eyes widened and I felt frozen in place and unsure of what to do to both distressed kids, however, I told myself to not panic as I tugged Anna into my arms to give her a tight hug just as she began to speak.

"It was on the bus, and a kid in my own grade kept messing with me. I told him to stop over and over again and he wouldn’t listen and kept tugging on either my hair or my bag. I know Kenny told me to stop fighting, but I got fed up and shoved the kid. He ended up falling, but he got up and was about to punch me, but Niko stepped in and... and beat him up! Then everyone started calling Niko a freak and a monster, but he only defended me! And Niko is sad and I hate it because he only defended me, so I just feel so guilty. I tried talking to him to remind him that he wasn’t a monster but he didn’t want to listen, and- and I didn’t know what else to do."

My eyes remained wide open once he was done speaking and I let out a long exhale, feeling like my whole world just got upturned. When I turned towards Niko, he wasn’t crying, but his eyes were filled with so much anger that it made chills engulfed me for a moment. I massaged Anna’s shoulders and kissed her head till she stopped crying, and once she was quiet, she got out of my arms and I turned towards Niko whose gaze was still averted.

I could feel waves of restrained anger pouring off his body and I swallowed emptily as I tentatively reached for him, but he jerked away from my touch and I resisted the urge to gasp from shock, not wanting to set him off further, but that had never happened before.

I waited a few seconds and decided to not touch him this time.

"Niko baby... what’s wrong?" I asked carefully and about a minute passed before he let out a huff, refusing to speak.

The urge to instantly make things better was clawing at my inside, however, Niko and I clearly weren’t on the same lane.

I could feel worry start to claw through my inside, along with the fear that something traumatizing had happened to him today. I didn’t know what to do right now, he was clearly hurting but also wasn’t willing to speak to me. Even though that hurt a little, I reminded myself that this was literally about him and how he was fairing,

Kenny was out on a business lunch, if not I’d have instantly called on him beside he was usually able to get through to him compared to me.

I bit on my bottom lip and exhaled solely before getting to my feet and walking around to stand in front of him, and then I carefully spoke,

"Baby, I know you’re sad about what that kid said to you today, but I want you to always remember that you’re not a monster and won’t ever be. You’ll always be a sweetheart, and..."

"Dad, stop." He said quietly and I flinched as he finally met my gaze. His eyes were very stormy and this was when I noticed the swells over his face from the fight, and once again, worry flared within me, but this was before he continued.

"I’m a monster and that’s the truth, and there’s nothing I can do about it because I’ve tried. I feel like a monster deep within." He tapped against his chest as he spoke and I had fo stop myself from bursting into tears at that moment.

"Baby, you’re not a monster and you’ll never be!" I cried out as I hurried forward and tugged him into my arms. However, he stiffened for a moment and then he struggled out of the hug and feeling too stunned to even comprehend what was going on, I loosened my hold and he stepped away, eyes averted once again.

"You don’t understand, Dad. You never do." He finally muttered as he fully turned away from me and I gaped at him, feeling like a knife got rammed through my chest. At the corner of my eyes, Anna’s shoulders were shaking and her hands were pressed over her face as she cried slowly and I knew she was currently drowning in guilt.

"But... baby... Niko...." I tried again, feeling frustration start to build within me. Having a genius kid had its downs, they mature too fast and can overly process things, so it was advisable to be careful and very patient with them. However, he threw his hands up and his voice suddenly sharpened.

"Stop! Stop please."

I was frozen in place, eyes widened and face contures in hurt as I gaped at him. He stared at me for a moment and softly spoke.

"You never understand because you’re not an alpha, dad. You don’t understand how it feels. I know I did something bad, but I don’t feel guilty, instead I wished I hurt him some more. Deep in my heart, I can feel it, this urge to beat him and... and..."

I didn’t realize when tears began to roll down my eyes till Niko trailed off and let out a tired sigh, and then he turned away and walked down the hallway. I attempted to go after me, but he closed the door– softly, but it still felt horrifying.

My heart was in my mouth and I was breathing frantically as I hurried for my phone, instantly putting a call through to Kenny as soon as I found my phone.

He picked up on the first ring and as soon as I heard his voice, I broke down all over again.

I had tried multiple times to get through to Niko, knocking countless times but he remained mute, and Anna was too guilt stricken to attempt giving it a try. I was holding Anna when Kenny arrived about forty minutes later and he instantly engulfed me and Anna in a firm hug.

"Where’s he?" He asked moments later. I had although fully explained what actually went down to him so he was already aware of all that had happened.

"Still in his bedroom." Anna supplied quietly and Kenny kissed her head before getting to his feet, and then his hand around the back of my head tugged me forward till our foreheads were pressed together.

"It’s gonna be alright, okay?" He assured me and I nodded numbly, feeling weak to the core, but as soon as he arrived, I feel lees worried because I believed he’d be able to get through to Niko.

I was back to holding Anna, and Kenny asked us to wait out here in the sitting room while he went alone. I wanted to protest and insist that I go with him, but I reminded myself this was for the best, especially on remembering that I was most definitely the last person he’d want to see since I wasn’t an alpha.

I waited nervously in the sitting room while Kenny disappeared down the hallway and after about a minute, the sound of a door opening and closing indicated that Kenny was already in Niko’s room.

That was beyond humbling but all I could really feel within me was relief, simply because at least now Niko would be able to get what’s on his chest off, making me feel grateful for Kenny’s presence once again.

Anna nudged me after about ten minutes, eyes wide but at least it was no longer teary.

"Do you think Niko is gonna be fine?" She asked quietly and I nodded as I kissed her head, desperately wishing that I would end up being right.

"Your brother’s gonna be fine since Kenny’s here now, okay?" I assured her and that visibly calmed her down once again, then she was tightening her grip around my middle and burrowing into my side even more.

We remained that way till about thirty minutes, and then as footsteps approached, Anna and I instantly got our feet.

Niko was in Kenny’s arms, arms around his shoulders in a hug and my entire shoulder sagged from a rush of relief.

Niko was fine.

He was fine.

Kenny gently set Niko down and said something in his ears, and then their eyes were darting towards me at the same time.

Then in the next moment, Niko was approaching me and I hurriedly crouched and opened my arms as he flew into my arms for a hug.
