She took a slow step forward, stopping beside him. She adjusted her dress before leaning against the table, crossing her legs. "I was speaking to Councillor Petrov earlier," she began, inspecting her perfect nails. "The old man had a suggestion—he thinks you should speak to Nolan and fix whatever is going on between you two."

She smirked, watching his expression wrinkle in disgust.

Pulling his chair back to put more space between them, he sat back down with a scoff, spreading his legs. "I’m not speaking to Nolan. I don’t have time for that sort of nonsense." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

"I don’t care if he holds a grudge against me. Outside of the council room, he’s nothing but an insect to me. And I don’t waste time talking to insects.

Argilia let out a small gasp, feigning a hurt expression and pressing a hand to her chest. "Ouch... Is that how you see the rest of us, then, my lord? The other councilors? Me?"

But then, she laughed, waving her hand dismissively before he could answer. "Anyway, I actually agree with Petrov."

"You nearly beat Nolan to death during that fight. Ever since that day, he’s been bedridden, trying to recover. It’s too bad Julian’s healing doesn’t take away the pain."

She sighed. "Look, I’m not saying you need to like each other, but if this keeps up, it’ll only create awkward tensions during council meetings. And as much as I enjoy watching you two glare at each other like caged wolves, it’s getting tedious."

Damien’s gaze shifted away from her as he leaned back into his chair, his arms lazily draped over the armrests. "He deserved what happened to him," he muttered, his voice edged with amusement. "He needed to be taught a lesson. To know his place."

Then, struck by an idea, his lips curled into a smirk. His eyes gleamed with arrogance as he chuckled deeply. "You know what? If you really want me to talk to Nolan, fine. But first, tell him to come in here, kneel, and apologize. Otherwise, forget it."

Argilia exhaled a slow exasperated sigh, rubbing her temple. Why was she even here, trying to fix things between a hotheaded king and a councilor?

She could have been at home, drinking a warm glass of blood, and enjoying a quiet evening, but instead, she was wasting her time trying to get these two to act like civilized beings.

"You and I both know Nolan would rather die than do that, lord Damien."

Damien simply shrugged. "Then I guess we’ll be having awkward meetings for a while, won’t we?"

Shaking her head, she pushed up from the table, straightening her dress before walking around the desk and heading for the door. She didn’t bother saying another word. If Damien wanted to be impossible, that was his problem. She was done stressing herself over the matter.

She stepped out, shutting the door behind her.

Uncle Alfonso trudged down the hallways of the mansion’s second floor, exhaustion weighing down his every step. He had just gotten back from work at the Smith’s company, and it was so late, that most of the house had already gone to bed. The only sound was the jingle of his car keys as he idly spun them around his fingers.

As he passed by Evans’ bedroom door, he heard muffled thumps and the sound of pacing footsteps.

He slowed to a stop, his brows furrowing as he glanced at his watch. It was almost midnight.

His curiosity piqued, he walked over to the door, knocking twice before turning the handle and cracking it open, just enough to poke his head in.

What he saw made him raise a brow.

Evan was pacing back and forth, muttering to himself. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even notice his door open.

Alfonso’s expression deadpanned as he fully stepped inside, shutting the door behind him. "What are you pacing around for?" he asked, his voice filled with exhaustion, but there was a hint of amusement too.

Evan finally stopped, turning toward his brother with an irritated frown. He waved a dismissive hand at him. "I’m thinking."

Alfonso snorted, walking further inside. "Thinking about what? At this time of night? Can’t it wait until morning?"

Evan inhaled, pinching the bridge of his nose. His brother’s voice was grating on his nerves, making it impossible to focus. "No, it can’t. I’m thinking of a way to get rid of Adeline before it’s too late."

Alfonso’s lips parted slightly, his tired eyes finally sharpening with interest. He walked over to the couch, plopped down on it, and scooted to the side until he was at the very edge. Then, he swung one leg up, his shoes almost touching the cushion.

Evan’s eye twitched. He quickly closed the distance between them and raised his hand, smacking Alfonso’s foot away. "Get your dirty legs off my sofa, you fool."

Alfonso scoffed but obeyed, dropping his foot back onto the floor. "Relax, will you?." He leaned back, tapping his fingers against the armrest. "What about Dacatt? What’s he been doing all this time? You do realize that the million dollars you paid him months ago doesn’t just fall from trees, right?"

"I’m sure you were there when Dacatt said he doesn’t rush his work," Evans explained, crossing his arms. "Besides, we’ve had a change of plans."

Alfonso arched an eyebrow suspiciously but decided not to press further. He wasn’t in the mood nor did he have the strength to listen to details. He was barely keeping himself awake at this point. With a lazy shrug, he pushed himself up from the couch, stretching his arms over his head.

"If you say so," he murmured, yawning. "Anyway, I’m going to bed."

Adeline’s eyes fluttered open to the sound of heavy rain and Enzo’s deep voice humming against her neck. She rubbed her eyes sleepily, shifting her head slightly to glance behind her. Enzo’s face was inches away, his lips curved into a small smile as he hummed some unknown tune.

She yawned, stretching her arm out to the nightstand beside her bed and fumbling for her phone. She tapped the screen twice, and the sudden burst of light made her squint, the time displaying 1:49 AM.
