A bitter chuckle left Enzo’s lips. "Are you done?" he asked flatly.

"Yes."

"Good. My answer remains the same."

Vincent studied him for a long moment before nodding. "If you insist, then. I just don’t want to feel guilty if anything happens to her... since I was the reason Lord Damien found out about her in the first place."

"Like I said, nothing will happen to her. That’s the end of this discussion. I have somewhere important to be."

Vincent gave one final nod before bowing his head. "Very well, my liege." He reached for the door handle, pausing briefly before adding, "I really hope you think about this properly."

With that, he pushed the door open and stepped out, shutting it behind him.

Enzo watched through the windshield as Vincent walked away, and as soon as he disappeared out of sight, his fingers gripped the steering wheel before slamming his head down on it in frustration.

Vincent was right, and that was what pissed him off the most. He couldn’t stop his father, not even with Andrei’s help. But Adeline is his mate. If he left her, she would be heartbroken, because of him. If he abandoned her, it wouldn’t just be painful for her—it would destroy her.

And what then? Sure, his father might spare her life if he returned. But what about her uncles?

Without him around, they would have nothing stopping them from killing her themselves. And if Adeline died, everything he had done would have been for nothing.

And besides, he can’t leave now. He hasn’t finished his plans with her.

A few days passed in the Smith estate, but nothing significant happened. Evans had spent most of his time searching for a new hitman, but he was having a harder time finding someone competent enough to meet his standards. After the last failure, he had to be extra cautious because he knew that Alfonso would never let him hear the end of it if he made another mistake.

Tonight was Beverly Smith’s birthday. The entire family had gathered in the garden, dressed in black, standing around the gravestone. The garden’s usual glow was absent, its lights turned off for the occasion, leaving only the soft flickering of candles that were lined on the ground.

Adeline stood among them, her fingers clutching the single white lily in her grasp. One by one, the family members—Her uncles, Svetlana, her daughters, and even Enzo—stepped forward, placing their flowers at the grave.

When it reached Adeline’s turn, she stepped forward and kneeled, setting the lily down among the other flowers. Her chest felt tight, the lump in her throat growing harder to swallow. Taking a shaky breath, she reached up and wiped the tears from her eyes before rising to her feet. She moved back to Enzo, who immediately wrapped a comforting arm around her and pulled her in, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head.

She sighed, steadying herself, but when her eyes flickered to the other side of the grave—where Evans, Alfonso, and Richard stood with their solemn expressions—anger flared in her chest.

They stood there, pretending to grieve, acting as if they had any right to mourn Beverly when they were the ones responsible for her death. It made her sick.

Her fingers curled into the fabric of Enzo’s suit, but he didn’t notice, because suddenly, he wasn’t feeling right.

A dizzy spell hit him out of nowhere, his head throbbing, and his vision unfocusing. His body swayed slightly, his grip loosening around Adeline, though he kept his expression neutral so as not to draw attention. His body was suddenly in need of blood.

He frowned, utterly confused. It hadn’t even been two weeks since his last feeding. Normally, he could go much longer without it, yet here he was. His body was getting weaker by the minute, exhaustion creeping into his limbs faster than it should have.

Leaning down, he whispered to Adeline, "I need to check on something quickly. I’ll be right back."

Adeline glanced up at him and nodded. "Okay."

He turned and walked toward the mansion, forcing himself to move at a steady pace, not wanting to appear unwell, but the second he stepped into the building, he darted forward with his vampire speed, making a beeline for the elevator.

He stepped in, his fingers jabbing the button repeatedly until the door closed and it began to ascend.

The doors slid open, and he wasted no time rushing down the hall. He pushed open the door to their bedroom, barely bothering to shut it properly before moving toward the couch. Bending down, he pulled his suitcase out and carried it into the bathroom, placing it on the counter before flipping it open.

The sight of the blood bags inside was a relief, his hands trembling as he reached for one, his fangs already beginning to ache.

Meanwhile, back in the garden, the ceremony continued.

It was time for everyone to light their individual candles and place them near the grave. The batch of candles had been arranged on the grass, each person stepping forward to take one, but when it reached Adeline’s turn to grab hers, she found nothing.

The maid who had prepared them had miscounted, so there wasn’t enough.

Richard, passing by at that moment, noticed her empty hands and stopped beside her. "There are more in the second-floor storage room. You can go get one from there."

"Enzo went inside... I could just call him to bring one for me on his way back," she thought.

"Alright. Thanks." She forced a polite smile, giving her uncle a nod before turning on her heels and walking towards the garden’s exit.

She stopped near the wooden door and reached into her pocket to pull out her phone—only to feel nothing but fabric.

"Shit," she muttered, checking her other pocket, then patting herself down, but the result was the same. She groaned, facepalming as realization hit her. "I left it in my room."

With no other choice, she exited the garden, making her way toward the mansion.

The storage room was just a few doors past their bedroom, but since her phone was inside and she needed it anyway, she decided to grab it first. Reaching the door, she noticed it was slightly ajar, which wasn’t unusual. "Enzo’s probably inside. He must have forgotten to close it properly."

She pushed it open and stepped in, her gaze instantly falling on the bedside table where her phone sat. She walked over and picked it up, but as she glanced around, she noticed the room was empty. "Enzo?" she called out but got no response.
