The CEO leaned in, adjusting his glasses as he carefully examined the messages. After a moment, his rigid posture relaxed, and he gave a small nod, confirming that it was indeed Adrian’s number. "My apologies. Follow me."

As he walked past them, heading deeper into the building, Enzo scoffed in mild annoyance. He reached for Adeline’s hand, intertwining their fingers before leading her after the CEO. She glanced at him but said nothing, simply squeezing his hand lightly in return.

They were led into a spacious office, modern like the rest of the building. The CEO moved to sit behind his large desk and gestured for them to take the two chairs opposite him.

As he pulled open a drawer and began searching for the receipts, his phone rang. Pausing, he glanced at the screen before offering them a tight-lipped smile. Raising a finger, he said, "Give me a minute."

He answered, greeting the person on the other end in a low, grumpy voice. "Hello, Poofy Cake."

Enzo, who had been leaning back lazily in his chair, blinked. "Poofy Cake?"

He glanced at Adeline, who looked just as surprised as he was.

He wasn’t sure if it was the way the man said it—completely deadpan—or the sheer contrast between his stern demeanor and the ridiculous nickname, but something about it struck him as absurdly funny.

The CEO continued speaking, his expression unchanged and his tone slightly annoyed. "Yes, I’m still in the office, poofy cakes. No, I haven’t forgotten. I’ll be home soon."

Enzo pressed his lips together, trying his best to keep his face neutral, but the words ’poofy cake’ echoed in his head. He lowered his head slightly, covering his mouth with one hand, his shoulders shaking as he tried to contain the laugh bubbling in his throat.

The CEO still focused on his call, repeated the name again. "Yes, Poofy Cake. I said I’ll be home soon."

That did it. A small sound slipped out from Enzo, something between a scoff and a snort. He quickly clenched his jaw, but it was too late.

The CEO’s gaze flicked toward him, his eyes narrowing.

Enzo straightened, forcing his face into a blank expression.

The call ended a moment later, and the CEO placed his phone down on the desk before fixing Enzo a pointed stare. "Is something funny?"

Instead of dismissing it like any normal person would, Enzo decided to take the opportunity and mess with him for his earlier attitude.

He crossed one leg over the other and nodded. "Yes. Actually, there is."

"And what exactly is so amusing?" The CEO asked, raising a brow.

Enzo gestured toward the phone. "The name Poofy Cake sounded hilarious coming from a guy like you."

"It’s a personal matter," the CEO said. "And I don’t see why it concerns you."

Enzo shrugged. "It doesn’t. I just... you know, wasn’t expecting it. You’ve got this whole serious, no-nonsense vibe going on, and then—boom. Poofy Cake." He shook his head, chuckling under his breath. "I gotta say, it threw me off. And it sounded a little cringe too."

Adeline discreetly covered her face with her hands, knowing Enzo was enjoying this way too much.

The CEO regarded him for a long moment before sighing. "Are you done?"

"Depends. Do you have any other ridiculous pet names I should know about?"

The CEO’s nostrils flared, and for a second, Adeline swore she saw a vein twitch in his temple.

The next thing they knew, they were being escorted toward the exit by a burly security guard. It wasn’t like they were being thrown out, more like ushered out with a silent ’don’t ever come back’. As soon as they stepped past the heavy glass doors, the security guard slammed them shut behind them.

Enzo rolled his eyes. "Idiots."

Beside him, Adeline didn’t even seem the least bit bothered about their abrupt exit. She clutched a manila folder tightly, her body practically vibrating with excitement. She was holding back a squeal, her hands itching to rip it open and devour the receipts inside.

Enzo chuckled, watching the way her fingers tapped against the folder impatiently. "Well, we finally got it," he drawled, shoving his hands into his pockets. "How do you feel? Happy?"

Adeline didn’t even hear him. Her mind was laser-focused on one thing—getting into that folder right now. She grabbed Enzo’s arm and began dragging him toward the black luxury car where their driver was already waiting.

"Well. I’ll take that as a yes," Enzo said, letting himself get pulled.

The moment they slid into the backseat and the car pulled away from where it had been parked, Adeline wasted no time. She flipped the folder open, pulling out a stack of freshly printed documents. Her eyes scanned the contents, the lines of text reflecting in her gaze.

The receipts detailed various purchases—dates, items, amounts, and most importantly, the names of the buyers and the seller.

Enzo plucked one of the papers from her hand, his eyes scanning the information. "You know, Andrei could have just sent screenshots of the original receipts through the phone instead of going through the trouble of printing all these out."

Adeline shrugged, flipping through the sheets. "It’s fine."

Her eyes moved over the text, recognizing familiar names. "Evans..." she read, then flipped to another page. "Alfonso... Richard..."

When she finished reviewing the documents, she neatly arranged them, slid them back into the folder, and handed them to Enzo for safekeeping. She then leaned back into the seat, exhaling deeply.

"Now that this is taken care of, all that’s left is for us to find solid proof that those bastards actually poisoned Grandma with the herbs. And when we do, these receipts will come in handy."

She tilted her head down, staring at her hands which rested on her. Then, she started laughing. But it wasn’t her usual laugh—the giggles or the soft chuckles Enzo was familiar with. No, this was different.

It was the kind of laugh one would hear from a villain in a dramatic show. A slow, sinister chuckle that built up into something almost unhinged.

Enzo arched a brow, watching her with a mix of amusement and concern. "Adeline...?" he murmured, unsure if she was genuinely slipping into madness or just messing around.
