Evans, realizing something, reached into his side pocket, pulling out Adeline’s phone. Clicking the side button, the screen flashed to life, displaying the lock screen.

He let out an exasperated sigh before holding down the power button, shutting it off completely. He scoffed and turned his attention back to Enzo, taking in the way he sat there, hands bound, head slightly bowed, looking utterly defeated.

Evans snorted. "You look like you’re about to shit your pants any second now." He tilted his head, amused. "Where’d that usual cocky, confident smile of yours go, huh?"

Shaking his head, he stood up and let the phone slip from his fingers. It landed on the floor with a small clack, but before it could even settle on the flat surface, Evans raised his foot and stomped down on it.

The screen shattered instantly, cracks spreading like a spiderweb. He lifted his foot again and again, slamming it down repeatedly, ensuring it was completely destroyed.

Richard, who had been watching from the sidelines, clenched his jaw. Unable to stomach the sight any longer, he turned on his heel and walked over to a thick wooden beam that stretched all the way up to the ceiling, leaning against it, his gaze fixed on a distant point—anywhere but them.

Dacatt, on the other hand, remained utterly unfazed. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a cigar and a lighter. With a flick of his thumb, a small flame danced to life, and he flipped the cigar between his lips and lit the end. He took a long drag before exhaling a lazy stream of smoke.

Alfonso stood just behind Evans, his arms crossed, saying nothing as he observed.

Evans turned his gaze back to Adeline, a sinister glint in his eyes as he began walking toward her.

Just then—

"Adeline... It’s me. Enzo."

Adeline’s lashes fluttered rapidly in confusion, her gaze snapping to Enzo. The voice had been as clear as if he had whispered right into her ear, yet his lips never moved.

Their eyes locked and he gave her the subtlest nod before speaking again—"I’ll explain later, but we can communicate like this. No need to talk. Just focus and speak with your mind."

Before she could fully process what on earth Enzo was talking about, Evans stopped in front of her, towering over her smaller form. He lifted his pistol and pointed it directly at her forehead. Tilting his head slightly, he waited, expecting something. Fear, panic or at least begging.

Adeline’s pupils darted to the ground, and she took a deep steadying breath to focus. "Is it working?" she asked in her mind. "Can you hear me?" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"Yes, my love," Enzo’s voice was immediate. "There’s no time, so listen to me. I need you to play dumb—cry, beg, whatever it takes to make them feel superior. Make them drop their guard, and more importantly, get them talking. I need them to admit to the things they’ve done. Don’t question it—Just trust me."

Adeline absolutely wanted to question it because, at this point, she was lost. First, he revealed he’s a vampire, next they can suddenly talk to each other telepathically, and now he’s asking her to do this. She wanted to ask what exactly was he even was planning, but she knew this wasn’t the time for it.

Sighing, she decided to do as he asked and called upon the acting lessons she had taken a few years ago. Her breathing turned uneven and she sniffled, forcing her shoulders to shake. Her lower lip quivered as tears welled in her eyes, and before long, a few of them slipped down her cheeks, glistening under the bright light.

Her lashes trembled as she lifted her head to look at Evans who flinched. It was barely noticeable—a minuscule step back, a flicker of surprise in his gaze—but Adeline caught it. He had been expecting her to cry, but at the same time, he hadn’t.

"Uncle...?" Her voice cracked and she sniffled, her hands tugging weakly against the restraints behind her back. "What’s going on? I—I’m scared... This is just a silly prank, right?" More tears welled up, spilling down her smooth face.

Enzo felt his brows shoot up in surprise. "How on earth does someone summon tears that quickly?"

Evans’ look of mild surprise vanished in an instant, replaced by a wide, twisted grin. He crouched in front of Adeline, resting his forearm on his knee as he looked at her like a cat toying with a trapped mouse.

"Oh, Adeline," he cooed, his voice thick with mockery. "This isn’t a prank at all. We brought you here to kill you and take the inheritance that rightfully belongs to us."

Adeline let out a broken sniffle, her entire body trembling. Her lips parted and she stuttered out a weak, "W-what?"

Evans exhaled in mild frustration, pinching the bridge of his nose and shaking his head as he recalled his past attempts at killing Adeline. "I’ve tried over and over again to get rid of you, and yet—" He paused, turning his head, and flicking his gun in the vampire’s direction. "And yet, this bastard keeps saving you."

He let out a humorless laugh, slapping a hand over his forehead. "Because of you, I had to kill poor Miranda. And the herbalist."

"W-what...? You—you were the one who killed Miran—?"

"Yes," Evans cut her off, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "I found out that you two had gone to see her, trying to figure out what the herbs you found in mother’s tearoom were. To keep you from getting too close to the truth, I had no choice but to send Dacatt here to eliminate her."

Adeline’s chest tightened as if she didn’t already know, her vision blurring as more tears spilled down her cheeks.

"As for the herbalist," Evans continued nonchalantly, "he was the one who sold us the herbs in the first place." He turned the gun in his hand, now gesturing carelessly between her and Enzo. "I feared that Miranda might have spilled everything to you two before she died, so I had to eliminate the herbalist too. I couldn’t risk any bullshit being dug up one day."

"But... but why? What could those herbs possibly be that you had to kill people over them?" Adeline asked, hiccuping between her sobs.
