Evans remained there for a brief time, studying his brother before finally moving to follow him. He slid into the driver’s seat while Alfonso settled into the passenger side, crossing his arms as he stared out the window. Evans started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot.

As the car sped down the empty road, Alfonso broke the silence, his voice now softer but still had a hint of irritation in it. "Why didn’t you tell Richard anyway? He’s supposed to be here with us right now. This involves all of us.

Evans gripped the steering wheel tighter, taking a sharp turn without slowing down. "Richard is weak," he said bluntly.

Alfonso turned his head to look at him, but Evans kept his eyes on the road.

"I’ve been watching him for a while now," Evans continued. "He hesitates too much. He’s too soft-hearted. His conscience will get the better of him, and he’ll ruin everything." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Alfonso remained silent, processing his brother’s words. He knew Evans wasn’t wrong. Richard had always been the most hesitant of the three, the one who second-guessed every decision they made. When they first discussed getting rid of Adeline, Richard was the one who balked, questioning if it was too far.

Letting out a weary sigh, Alfonso leaned his head against the window, watching the streetlights blur past. "Still," he said quietly, "he’s our brother. He deserves to know what’s going on. We can’t keep him in the dark forever."

"I’ll tell him, but not now. This one stays between us for now. You said it yourself—we’re running low on funds. I can’t risk him messing this up. Not when we’re this close."

Vincent approached the door to Damien’s office, straightening his vest. He halted, his clenched fist hovering in front of the door in a moment of hesitation before proceeding to knock. The muffled chatter of voices inside fell silent, and a few seconds later, the door creaked open. Vincent stepped inside, bowing his head respectfully as a group of vampires exited the room.

Damien sat behind his desk, his fingers rhythmically tapping on the surface as he stared at a pile of documents with disinterest. His eyes briefly flicked up at Vincent before returning to his papers.

Vincent approached the desk and stopped a few feet away with his head still bowed. He reached into his coat and withdrew an envelope, placing it on the desk and sliding it toward Damien.

He cast his eyes at the envelope and exhaled an exasperated sigh, waving a hand dismissively. "If this is another letter from the council, Vincent, toss it in the fire. I’ve had enough of their endless complaints for now."

Vincent shook his head. "Forgive me, my lord, but this isn’t from the council. I didn’t receive a reply to the last letter I sent to Master Enzo, so I used the portal to deliver another one. I also delivered one to Andrei personally... but during my visit, I came across something I felt you should see."

At the mention of his son’s name, Damien’s posture stiffened, and his fingers stopped their tapping. His brows perked up with interest as he quickly snatched the envelope and tore it open.

Inside were a series of photographs. As Damien flipped through them, his forehead creased into a frown. The images showed Enzo stepping out of his mansion with a human woman by his side.

His grip on the photos tightened, the paper crinkling under his fingers. He then dropped the photos and held up one of them, glaring at Vincent. "Who is this girl?"

Vincent bowed his head lower, his hands clasped tightly in front of him in fear as he shook his head. "I don’t know much yet, my lord. I’ve only learned bits and pieces, but from what I’ve gathered, she has been staying at Master Enzo’s residence for quite some time. One of his housekeepers told me about it, though no one seems to know much about her."

Veins began pulsing on his temples, and his fingers crumpled the photograph into a ball. "Is she the reason that brat refuses to return here?"

"I’m not certain, my lord. I would not wish to jump to conclusions. It could be unrelated. She may simply be someone passing through his life."

Damien slammed his hand onto the desk, causing Vincent to flinch again. Realizing how terrifying he was getting, he exhaled harshly, his anger momentarily cooling as he leaned back in his chair. He rubbed his temples, trying to calm himself down.

"If she’s nothing, then why has he kept her around? This is not like him. If she is the reason he’s turned his back on our world’s future... I won’t hesitate to kill her. That human will not stand in the way of the prosperity of our world."

Damien got up, now glaring down at smaller Vincent. "From now on, you will visit the human world frequently. Keep an eye on them and find out who she is to him."

Vincent shivered, getting goosebumps from just the thought of spying on Enzo. He already began to fear what Enzo would do to him if he caught him. The slightest misstep could cost him his life. Forcing down his unease, Vincent bowed. "As you wish, my lord. I will do my best to keep you informed."

"See that you do."

As Vincent turned and exited the office, Damien slammed his fist against the desk again, muttering, "Enzo, you insufferable brat."

Vincent walked down the corridor, biting his lips nervously. He reached an inconspicuous door at the end of the corridor and opened it, stepping into an empty room. The room was dark, and the only light inside came from a high window.

Closing the door behind him, he approached the far wall and reached out, his hand meeting what looked like solid stone. But the surface rippled beneath his touch, like disturbed water.

This was the portal Damien had made for him to use when delivering messages to Enzo in the human world.

He glanced over his shoulder, ensuring he was truly alone, then stepped forward. The wall enveloped him, the liquid-like surface pulling him in. For a brief moment, he felt weightless, as though suspended in water, before his feet touched solid ground on the other side.

Opening his eyes, Vincent found himself standing in the human world, in the shadowy corner of a quiet alley. The portal shimmered behind him before vanishing.
