When Evelyn stopped to catch her breath, she turned toward Enzo, pointing a finger accusingly at him as she marched up. "And you! You told me you’d take care of her. You promised nothing would happen to her!"

She emphasized her words by repeatedly jabbing her pointed finger into his chest. "So how come this happened, huh?! You were supposed to protect her!"

Enzo raised both hands in mock surrender. "Calm down. She’s in one piece, isn’t she?"

"Calm down?!" Evelyn’s voice pitched higher, and she threw her hands up. "You want me to calm down?!"

At this point, Adeline couldn’t contain herself anymore and burst out laughing from the bed. "Evelyn, stop," she managed between laughs. She swung her legs off the bed and stood, walking over and grabbing her wrist to pull her back.

"I’m fine. Look—" She held up her arms and turned them over, showing her unblemished skin, then turned her face from side to side so Evelyn could see. "Barely a scratch, see? All thanks to Enzo here."

Evelyn paused, eyeing her suspiciously before her gaze darted back to Enzo. "Fine." Satisfied, she tugged Adeline back towards the bed and took hold of her shoulders, gently guiding her to sit back down on it. "Sit down. No moving around for now."

"Yes, ma’am."

Curious, Adeline asked, "But seriously, how did you even find me here?"

Evelyn tossed her hair over her shoulder and raised her chin, a proud smile adorning her face. "Oh, please, it was easy. This is the closest hospital to the crash site, so I figured you’d be here. And when I came in..." She paused, tapping her nose smugly. "I could smell your perfume."

Adeline listened intently as she explained, and as soon as she was done, she couldn’t contain her amusement, letting out a loud snort of laughter. "You sniffed me out like a dog? You’ve got to be kidding me."

Evelyn shrugged. "Hey, desperate times call for desperate measures."

As Adeline’s laughter began to die down, Evelyn’s expression turned more serious. She sat beside her, placing a hand over Adeline’s. "But seriously. What’s going on, Adeline? First, you were almost murdered, and now this crash. Are you okay? Is there something you’re not telling me?"

Adeline looked down at her knees, her fingers anxiously gripping the edge of the bed. For a moment, she thought about telling her everything—about her arranged relationship with Enzo, the plans to expose her uncles. Evelyn deserved to know, didn’t she? The last thing she wanted was for her to find out on her own.

She flicked her gaze towards Enzo from the corner of her eye, and when he met her gaze, he gave the subtlest shake of his head, silently advising against it.

Adeline sighed deeply, burying her face in her palm. "No, of course not. It just... feels like the world’s been against me these past few months, you know? Like every time I think I’m okay, something new happens, and suddenly, I’m in danger again."

Evelyn’s forehead creased into a frown, and her eyes became slightly narrowed as a look of doubt crept across her face, suggesting she wasn’t entirely convinced by what Adeline had just said. But then, she let out a breathless laugh and hugged her from the side. "That’s okay. Whatever’s going on, you know I’ve got your back, right?"

Adeline’s shoulders relaxed, and she smiled, leaning her head against Evelyn’s. "Thanks."

Suddenly, Evelyn’s phone rang from inside her purse. Groaning loudly, she pulled it out and glanced at the screen. "Ugh, it’s my alarm. My shift at work starts soon."

Evelyn stood reluctantly, brushing off her jeans. "I guess. I’ll check on you later." Turning to Enzo, who was still standing at the door, she pointed at him. "You better look after her."

"Oh, I wouldn’t dream of doing otherwise."

Evelyn rolled her eyes with a dismissive wave of her hand and headed for the door.

Just as her fingers brushed the handle, Adeline suddenly called out, "Evelyn!"

Evelyn quickly whipped around. "What? What is it?"

Adeline cleared her throat, as if preparing to announce something important. "Fun fact, a cloud weighs about a million tons."

There was a long pause.

Evelyn’s hand hovered over the doorknob as she stared at Adeline with wide, concerned eyes. "Right..." she said slowly, dragging out the word.

She glanced over her shoulder at Enzo, who shrugged in response. Leaning in slightly, she whispered to him, "Do we need to call a doctor or something?"

"I was just messing with you. Go on, or you’ll be late for your shift." Adeline said with a chuckle, waving her off.

"Fine. But let me know if anything comes up. I’ll be here in a flash. Faster than you can say ’clouds weigh a million tonnes.’ Got it?"

"Got it."

With that, Evelyn left the room, leaving the door slightly ajar.

Enzo stepped out into the hallway, following her with his eyes until she disappeared from view. Only then did he return to the room, shutting the door behind him.

Turning around, Enzo noticed Adeline watching him intently. He let out a low hum before walking over to the left side of the bed. Instead of sitting there, he grabbed the chair he’d been using earlier, dragged it across the floor to the other side, and sat down right in front of her.

"Go ahead. Ask."

"Why didn’t you want me to tell Evelyn?"

"Because I don’t trust her yet. If she knows the truth, she might blab it out—intentionally or not. If your uncles find out we know they’ve been the ones behind the attempts on your life, they’ll get cautious. And if that happens, exposing them will be difficult, if not impossible. Worse, they might step back entirely and decide your inheritance isn’t worth the trouble anymore."

Adeline let out an awkward, low chuckle, shrugging. "Well... that wouldn’t be so bad, would it? I mean-"

The words had barely left her mouth before Enzo snapped his fingers, cutting her off. "Absolutely not. They tried to murder you. Twice. They don’t get to walk away just because it gets hard for them. I won’t let them."
