Svetlana approached with a pleased smile, her bright yellow, knee-length dress swaying with each step. She reached out, patting Enzo’s shoulder affectionately. "I’m alright, my dear dear. How was your little vacation? I must say, I wasn’t expecting you back so soon. I thought you’d be gone for at least a week or so."

He offered an easy shrug. "We had a change of plans. Something came up, so we had to cut the trip short."

Svetlana’s concerned expression was as fake as ever. If only she knew how horrible she was at it.

A short gasp left her lips as she glanced down at Adeline in his arms. "Oh dear, is she alright?"

Enzo forced a small chuckle, nodding. "Yes, she’s just exhausted from the long ride. That’s all." He adjusted his grip, shifting Adeline’s weight in his arms. "I should get going now. My arm’s starting to ache from carrying her."

Svetlana nodded, patting his back dismissively, giving him a gentle nudge forward. "Alright, alright. Go along now, dear."

She stood there, watching as Enzo walked away, her gaze following his every step until he disappeared into the hallway. The second he was out of sight, her saccharine smile vanished. Rolling her eyes, she scoffed before turning and making her way back outside, where she had originally come from.

Enzo pushed open the door to his shared room with Adeline, stepping inside and closing it behind him with his foot.

He walked over to the bed and crouched down, gently laying Adeline on the soft mattress. She stirred slightly but didn’t wake, her face peaceful as she shifted onto her side. Enzo sat beside her, brushing a few stray strands of hair away from her face. His fingers lingered, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheek.

A small smile crept onto his lips—just before a sudden wave of dizziness hit him.

His head throbbed, and he grimaced, cupping his forehead in his palm. His whole body felt sluggish and weak. He hadn’t fed in a while, and it was already starting to show.

He made his way to the couch by the window, crouching down and reaching beneath it. His fingers curled around the handle of his suitcase, and he pulled it out.

Locking the door behind him, he placed the suitcase onto the tiled counter. His fingers moved, undoing the metal locks until he heard a click. The lid lifted, and when he saw the two blood bags resting inside, he exhaled hungrily.

Feeding had become such a hassle ever since he moved in with Adeline. He had to be extremely careful, making sure she never caught even the slightest hint of what he was. It’s almost as if every feeding had to be planned. He could never afford to slip up, because if she ever found out he drank blood... Where would he even start explaining?

He grabbed one of the blood bags, holding it close to his mouth. His fangs elongated, piercing through the plastic, and the moment the thick, crimson liquid hit his tongue, a low, contented groan escaped from deep within his throat.

He had been forcing himself to eat human food for days—tasteless, bland, nothing but ash on his tongue. But this? This was paradise.

At first, he tried to drink slowly, to savor the taste—but it only made him hungrier. He gave in and drank faster, draining the first bag within seconds before grabbing the second, sinking his fangs into it.

Warmth spread through his body, his limbs tingling as the blood worked its way through him.

By the time he finished the second bag, he could feel the dizziness starting to fade and power humming beneath his skin. The rush was overwhelming. His body twitched, and his pupils dilated, his breath coming out in heavy, uneven pants. His senses sharpened so much that he could even hear the slow, steady heartbeat of Adeline in the next room.

A drop of blood trickled down the corners of his mouth, dripping down his chin and staining his neck. He tossed the empty blood bags back into the suitcase, snapping it shut before stooping down, resting his body against the counter.

He needed a moment to let his body settle. When a vampire as strong as he was went too long without feeding, the rush of fresh blood could be overwhelming. The sudden surge of energy could send them into a frenzy or worse, cause them to collapse from the sheer intensity of it. If he wasn’t careful, he could pass out right here on the bathroom floor.

And that was the last thing he wanted, because what if Adeline woke up? What if she walked in here, only to find him unconscious, his mouth stained with blood and a suitcase that contained blood bags lying beside him?

After his body finally calmed, Enzo reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone. He quickly texted Andrei, letting him know he was out of blood. Then, he turned his attention back to the bathroom, meticulously wiping away every single trace of blood that had dripped onto the floor.

Once he was certain the bathroom was spotless, he stepped out with the suitcase in hand. His eyes flicked to the bed where Adeline still lay sound asleep. He watched her for a brief moment before turning and heading to the door.

Just as he opened it, Andrei was already there, waiting. "Go get more," Enzo instructed, handing him the suitcase.

Andrei gave a small bow of his head, taking the case from him. "Yes, my liege," he said, before turning on his heel and disappearing down the hall.

Enzo sighed, shutting the door behind him. He wandered over to the couch—the one he had always used as his bed—and slumped onto it, facing the ceiling, his arms tucked behind his head.

It had begun to rain, the soft patter against the window filling the room. As he closed his eyes to try and get some rest, something nagged at him. His brows furrowed, and then it hit him.

"What am I still doing on this damn couch?"
