Adeline’s foot tapped impatiently against the floor, her arms crossed as the seconds ticked by slowly.

A soft ding echoed through the elevator as it reached the first floor. The doors opened, and she stepped out, making a left down the hallway. Enzo shoved his hands into his pockets and followed behind her at a relaxed pace. He could already guess where this was going, and he found it entertaining.

They reached the kitchen, which was already bustling with activity. The air was filled with the scent of freshly baked pastries, sizzling meats, and the rich aroma of brewing coffee. Maids moved swiftly, their hands full of ingredients, while the head chef circled the space, inspecting dishes and giving orders to ensure everything was made to perfection.

The sound of the double doors swinging open drew her attention, and she turned to see Adeline marching inside with Enzo trailing behind. The chef’s brows lifted in surprise before she plastered on a warm smile. "Good morning, Miss Adeline," she greeted as she approached. "What brings you to the kitchen so early?"

Adeline slid onto a stool by the counter, resting her elbows on the surface. She hummed thoughtfully, tapping a finger against her chin as she considered what she wanted.

She needed something sweet. The sweetest thing she could possibly think of. Her eyes brightened as an idea came to her, and she snapped her fingers. "Ice cream. From the dessert freezer. The tastiest one you’ve got."

A confused "huh" escaped the head chef as she blinked at Adeline. "Ice cream?" she repeated, her brow arching in surprise. Her gaze darted up to the large clock on the wall, then back at the young lady sitting eagerly before her.

"Miss Adeline... Isn’t it a bit too early for something so sweet? Especially on an empty stomach? You could get an upset stomach."

Adeline waved a dismissive hand, shaking her head. "I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. Just bring it."

The head chef hesitated, her eyes shifting toward Enzo, seeking some kind of rational intervention, but Enzo simply leaned against the counter, staring down at Adeline with an amused expression. When he noticed the chef looking at him expectantly, he shrugged.

With a sigh, the head chef complied, giving her a subtle nod. "Very well, then."

Adeline tapped her fingers on the counter impatiently, her sharp blue eyes locked onto the chef as she turned and made her way towards the freezer.

A breathless laugh escaped Enzo, and almost immediately, Adeline turned her attention to him, her eyes narrowing.

"What?"

He leaned in a little, resting one elbow against the counter. "Did you think I was lying or something?"

Shrugging, she gestured toward the chef, who was now pulling open the dessert freezer. "I have to confirm for myself."

A few seconds later, the chef returned, holding a large tub of ice cream. She placed it on the counter with a heavy thud and pushed it forward before handing Adeline a spoon. "Here you go, Miss Adeline. If you’ll excuse me, I have to check on the breakfast preparations before they mess something up." With that, she turned and left.

Adeline barely acknowledged her departure, her focus entirely on the tub in front of her. A grin stretched across her face as she grabbed both sides of the tub and pulled it close, eager to open it.

She reached for the lid, but before she could touch it, Enzo’s hand caught her wrist. She watched silently as he lifted her hand up to his lips and placed a soft kiss on the back of it.

"Allow me, princess," he murmured against her skin.

Adeline pulled her hand back, rubbing the area he had just kissed, her brows raised in mild suspicion. "You’re extra affectionate this morning."

Enzo chuckled, reaching out to tug her cheek playfully. "I’m always affectionate."

"Right..." She slapped his hand away with a small huff, shifting her gaze back to the tub.

He popped the lid off, revealing the two-toned ice cream inside. One half was a creamy vanilla, the other a vibrant, rosy strawberry.

Adeline’s eyes practically sparkled at the sight, her lips parting slightly in awe. For a moment, she forgot why she had rushed down to the kitchen in the first place or what Enzo had told her earlier. With everything that had happened these past months, she couldn’t even remember the last time she had seen ice cream with her own eyes, let alone had the chance to eat and enjoy any.

Enzo, on the other hand, only grimaced as he peered into the tub. He scoffed, shaking his head. "Who the fuck adds two flavors of ice cream in one tub?" He gestured down at it with mild irritation. "If it melts, it’ll mix together and be ruined."

Adeline rolled her eyes. "It won’t be ruined. It’ll just be... combined."

"Yes, it will."

"No, it won’t. You sound so sure for something you’ve never even eaten."

"I don’t have to eat it to know it’d taste terrible all mixed together." He extended a hand toward her, wiggling his fingers slightly. "Spoon, please."

Adeline placed it in his palm, and he dipped it into the vanilla side, scooping up a perfect bit before extending the spoon toward her lips. He felt a mixture of amusement and empathy for her, already certain of the reaction that was to come. "Open wide," he urged, a hint of mischief in his tone.

"Hmm..." Adeline hesitated, squinting at him. "Why do you look like that?"

"Like what?"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

She leaned in and took the spoon into her mouth, closing her lips over the creamy vanilla.

The moment it hit her tongue, her entire face twisted in disgust. Her body jerked slightly, as if recoiling from the taste itself. It wasn’t just that it lacked the sweetness she remembered—it tasted like ash. It was like someone had taken a handful of cold, dry, burnt wood and ground it into dust before forcing her to swallow it. It was the most revolting thing she had ever tasted in her entire life.

Her hands gripped the edge of the counter as she frantically looked around, her eyes darting left and right, searching for anywhere she could spit it out. But there was nowhere—no napkin, no trash bin within reach. It was either on the sparkling counter or the clean floor. Left with no choice, she swallowed, her throat tightening as the awful taste lingered.
