For a moment, Andrei simply stared down at her, contemplating whether to disobey his boss’s orders or give Adeline the space she wanted. Taking a step back, he gave her a small nod. "Very well."

"Good," Adeline replied. She turned on her heel and resumed walking down the hallway.

"May I at least know where you’re going, Miss Adeline?" Andrei’s voice echoed behind her.

Without turning back, she waved a dismissive hand. "I’m just bored and looking for something to do," she said over her shoulder, quickening her pace.

As she wandered down the corridor, her eyes scanned the doors lining the walls. Most led to rooms she had no interest in—guest rooms, storage, and some office space. But one door at the end of the hallway caught her attention. She hadn’t stepped inside of it before. It looked older, almost forgotten, with its handle slightly tarnished.

She stopped in front of it, glancing around first before reaching out and turning the knob, pushing the door open.

The room inside was small and dim, the smell of dust hitting her nose immediately. She coughed, waving her hand in front of her face to clear the air. "When was this place last opened?" she muttered to herself, stepping inside and closing the door behind her.

Fumbling along the wall, her fingers found the light switch. Upon clicking it, the bulb flickered to life, revealing a cramped storage room filled with old, unused furniture, stacks of boxes, and other random knick-knacks covered in thick layers of dust. Her fingers trailed along the edge of an old wooden table, the dust staining her fingertips. She sneezed, shaking her head.

She looked around the cluttered storage room, her gaze settling on a pile of forgotten supplies gathering dust in the corner. Something beneath the stack caught her eye, sparking a chuckle. She stepped closer, crouching to get a better look. Hidden beneath the old supplies was an easel—her easel.

Her memories flooded back, transporting her to a time when she had attempted to pursue art. She’d spent hours with that easel, sketching and painting, but when it turned out she was horrible at art, the easel ended up here, abandoned like so many of her other hobbies.

"I can’t believe this is still here."

She moved closer, brushing off the layers of dust and cobwebs that clung to the supplies stacked on top. She rolled up her sleeves and began pushing supplies off the easel, trying to free it. As she worked, a small metallic object that

looked like a trinket rolled down the pile, and the sharp edge grazed her finger.

"Ow!" she yelped and yanked her hand back, waving it to shake off the sting that had already bloomed at the tip of her finger. As she cradled the injured finger, a sudden familiar voice spoke from behind her.

"Are you alright, Miss Adeline?"

The deep, emotionless tone sent a jolt through her body. She froze, her eyes snapping wide open before she spun around. Now standing in the room was Andrei.

Adeline screamed, stumbling backward, her foot catching on a box. She flailed her arms, about to fall into the pile of supplies when Andrei reached out, catching her. His hands gripped her arms, holding her steady for a split second before pulling her upright.

"You should be careful. You might hurt yourself."

Adeline’s eyes darted past him to the door. It was still closed, just as she’d left it. She pointed toward it, her mouth moving but no coherent words coming out. Finally, she managed to say, "What the—how the hell did you get in here?!" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Andrei simply shrugged.

"I closed that door. I know I did. I didn’t hear it open, and there’s no way you followed me without me noticing. So how did you get in here? And how did you even know I was here?"

Andrei shrugged again and said, "I simply had a feeling you might be here. As for how I entered—I did like any other human would."

She blinked, her brows furrowing as she tried to process his words. Something about this guy was weird. She squinted at him. "A feeling? That’s not an answer. And don’t give me that ’like any other human’ nonsense. I didn’t hear the door, and I know you didn’t follow me. Do you have superhuman speed or something? Because this isn’t the first time you’ve just appeared out of nowhere!"

Andrei tilted his head slightly, his blank expression shifting to a confused one. "I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean, Miss Adeline."

Adeline groaned, throwing her hands up in resignation. "You know what? Forget it," she muttered, turning her back to him. She stuck the tip of her hurting finger in her mouth, trying to soothe the sting.

The sound of Andrei’s boots stepping closer made her shoulders stiffen. He came to stand beside her before extending his hand. "Give me your hand."

Adeline blinked and looked down at his outstretched palm, then back up at his face. She hesitated, unsure if she wanted to let him touch her. But the throbbing in her finger persuaded her. Sighing, she pulled her finger from her mouth and placed her hand in his.

Andrei’s large hand engulfed hers. He reached into his pocket with the other hand, pulled out a small roll of white bandage, and began wrapping it carefully around her finger.

"This will do for now," he said as he finished, tucking the end of the bandage securely. "But you should probably see a professional to make sure it’s properly taken care of."

The moment he let go, Adeline flexed her finger, her eyes widening in surprise. The pain was nearly gone. She stared up at him, cocking an eyebrow. "Do you always carry a bandage around with you?"

Andrei shook his head. "Not really."

A chuckle escaped her lips as she bent down once again to free the easel. "You’re quite the mysterious one, aren’t you? Thanks for the help," she added without looking at him.
