Slowly, Damien lifted his gaze, and standing ahead of him was Adeline. Her fists were balled tightly at her sides, shoulders squared, and her chest heaving. She glared up at him, trembling not with fear but with a rage that matched even his own.

Enzo exhaled a deep, tired sigh, his body aching as he brushed the dust off his clothes and pushed himself up from the ground.

As he moved, the loose strands of hair that had fallen over his eyes fluttered, blocking some of his vision. With a swift toss of his head, he threw them back, his blue eyes clearing as he focused on what mattered most—Adeline.

When he reached her, he lifted a hand and cupped her cheek in his palm, his thumb brushing lightly along her skin as he turned her face toward him.

"Are you alright, my love?" He asked softly, his voice so tender that, for a moment, the violence and chaos surrounding them seemed to fade.

Adeline’s furious glare melted instantly, and she nodded, her fists unclenching as she leaned into his hand. Her eyes, still filled with adrenaline, softened into a worried gaze as she truly looked at him—at the small bruises along his jawline, the small cut on his forehead, and the blood smeared across his mouth.

Her hand rose, and she placed her palm gently against his cheek. "What about you? Are you alright? Your face..."

Enzo gave a soft chuckle, despite the pain lancing through his ribs at the motion. He moved both hands to gently encircle her wrist.

"I’m fine, my dear," he murmured. "This... this is nothing. I don’t even know where on earth they came from, since I wasn’t hit in the face. But...they’ll heal in just a few minutes."

Adeline bit her lip, still looking unconvinced.

Across from them, Damien’s jaw ticked in barely restrained fury. His fingers curled into fists at his sides as he watched the two lovers speak to each other as if they’d forgotten he was even there—as if he was nothing more than the air they breathed.

"You brats!" Damien yelled. "I’m still right here."

He swatted his cape aside and lunged forward, his fist cocked back and aimed straight for Enzo. His mind focused entirely on his son—he had no intention of hitting the girl.

Though ruthless, Damien held one line he refused to cross: he would not strike a woman. If he needed to kill one, he would do it swiftly, painlessly.

However, before his fist could connect, the two shifted. Their forms blurred—an instant of motion where cloth, hair, and limbs whipped in opposite directions. Enzo darted left, and Adeline shot right.

As Damien’s strike hit nothing but empty air, he skidded to a halt, lowering his fist. He jerked his head to the right where Adeline had dashed off, and then to the left, where Enzo had bolted, but both were gone, vanished as if the night had swallowed them.

"What are they up to?" he muttered suspiciously under his breath.

Just then, a sudden, searing pain exploded in his back. Adeline had appeared behind him, her fist slamming hard into his lower spine.

Damien grunted and instinctively spun around. Without seeing who it was, he swung a brutal backhand. But Adeline darted backward, dodging him before he could land the hit. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

At the same moment, Enzo appeared at his blind side, driving a kick into the back of Damien’s left knee.

The joint buckled with a sickening sound. Pain erupted in his leg, and he tried to withstand it, but for some reason he couldn’t comprehend, his body betrayed him.

For the first time, Damien was forced down, one knee slamming onto the asphalt. His heavy cape spilled around him like a dark pool, his fist hitting the ground to brace himself.

But they weren’t finished, as Adeline was already beside him again. She twisted her body, raising her knee and driving it into Damien’s jaw.

His head snapped to the side from the force, a small, involuntary grunt escaping his throat. He caught himself before he fell completely, now with both knees on the ground and one hand planted firmly on the asphalt, the other gripping his bruised jaw.

Argilia watched dispassionately, while Andrei, still restrained by chains beside her, tensed at the sight. Her arms were loosely crossed over her chest, her expression neutral.

She didn’t move to help, because he knew no matter how hard they struck him, no matter how well-coordinated their attack was, it wouldn’t be enough. Not against Damien.

Enzo stepped forward, stopping a few feet in front of his kneeling father, his chest rising and falling heavily. He sighed loudly, shaking his head in frustration before speaking. "Please, just go home, Father."

Damien’s head lifted slowly, his dark eyes locking on Enzo’s. In a blink of an eye—just as Enzo finished speaking—Damien moved.

Enzo barely even saw it happen. The next thing he knew, Damien’s hand was wrapped around his neck once more, lifting him off the ground. He gasped, his tiptoes barely brushing the ground, his hands shooting up to clutch his father’s wrist.

Confusion clouded his mind. One second Damien had been kneeling, battered and slow—and now...

"How—?" he thought wildly.

It was then he realized something. All these years spent living among humans, away from the vampire world... they had truly dulled him. They had made him slow. Made him forget what his father’s power was like.

"Let him go!" Adeline’s voice rang out. She sprinted toward Damien, her fists clenched tightly as she drew her arm back, aiming to slam her fist straight into him.

Without so much as glancing at her, Damien’s hand shot out and seized her wrist mid-air. His fingers locked around her slender arm, and slowly, he turned his head, his gaze dropping down to her furious, tear-filled eyes.

He squeezed, making her wince in pain. "If you know what’s best for you, you’ll stay out of this."

Adeline tried to yank her arm free, but his hand only squeezed harder, eliciting a sharp scream from her lips. His expression never shifted. It stayed blank, as if she was little more than an insect trying to bite him.

"I don’t want to hurt you," he muttered, almost sounding bored. With that, he shoved her backward.
