Enzo blinked, snapping out of whatever thoughts had captured him. Realizing he’d been staring a bit too much, he glanced away. "Sorry. I was just lost in thought. Forgot I was looking."

A frown of curiosity formed on her face, her fingers resuming their task of adjusting his collar. "What were you thinking about?"

Enzo exhaled an almost nervous laugh, his gaze drifting back to her. "I was thinking about how close I came to losing you."

A hint of sadness crept into his features, something she had never seen on his face before. "If I hadn’t seen that bullet in time..." He trailed off, his eyes flicking down to the floor for a brief moment before meeting hers again. "You’d be dead by now. And if that happened, I don’t know what I’d do. I might mess with you a lot, Adeline, but if anything like that happened to you, I’d be shattered."

Adeline’s hands stilled on his collar, the edge of her frown softening as she stared down at him. She didn’t know what to say to that, so she said nothing. Instead, she leaned down and began buttoning his shirt.

A few seconds later, she asked quietly, "Do you know who was behind the shooting?"

"Your uncles, no doubt. They were probably trying to silence Miranda, but they were too late. She already told us everything. And since you were there, the shooter must’ve decided to take you out too. You’re still their main target, after all."

She finished buttoning the last button and tugged lightly on the edges of his shirt to straighten it. Her lips thinned into a narrow line as she pressed them together, as if she were debating something. She sighed, her voice dropping to a murmur as she asked, "We’ll pay that bar Miranda mentioned a visit when you’re all better, won’t we?"

Enzo nodded. "Of course."

"Thanks by the way... For saving me."

A warm smile spread across Enzo face. He reached out and gently patted her head lightly, brushing against her blonde hair with his fingers.

Adeline immediately swatted his hand away and scowled at him. "Don’t touch me, idiot."

Enzo chuckled. "But seriously, you don’t need to thank me. I was just keeping my promise." Then, he patted his lap and added, "Now, for my pants."

Adeline’s eyes flicked to his lap, then to the pants folded beside him. Realizing what he meant, she squeezed her eyes shut and breathed in deeply, muttering, "I can’t believe I’m doing this. The Adeline I know would never, ever do something like this—not even with a ten-foot pole."

Her words were met with a low laugh from Enzo, but he didn’t say anything else, simply waiting for her to proceed.

Two days later.

At the Smith mansion, Uncle Evans stepped out of the elevator onto the first floor, adjusting his cufflinks as he walked toward the foyer. He was dressed in a dark suit, his polished shoes clicking against the tiled floor. He seemed in a hurry, likely on his way out for some important business.

Halfway across the hallway, his phone buzzed in his pocket, halting him. Pulling it out, he answered, "Yes?"

Dacatt’s voice came through. "Has she returned yet?"

Evans glanced around, his eyes scanning the quiet hallway instinctively. "No. Not yet."

There was a pause at the other end, followed by a hum before Dacatt spoke again. "Alright. Let me know the moment she does."

"Alright," Evans replied, nodding slightly even though Dacatt couldn’t see him. He ended the call, sliding the phone back into his pocket before turning left into the hallway.

As he rounded the corner, he suddenly recoiled, letting out a startled scream.

Standing directly in front of him was Adeline, her arms crossed over her chest. Enzo towered behind her with one hand resting on her shoulder, his blue eyes boring onto Evans like a predator sizing up its prey.

Evans gripped his chest, breathing heavily as his wide, panicked eyes darted between the two of them. The words escaped his lips before he could stop them. "You two—"

His gaze locked on Enzo, and his voice dropped to a nervous murmur, "You’re not supposed to be—" Realizing his slip, he abruptly shut his mouth.

Adeline stepped forward, closing the distance between them. Now directly in front of him, she tilted her head slightly, forcing his full attention on her. "Not supposed to what, Uncle Evans?"

Evans stumbled back a few steps, putting more space between them, and then cleared his throat. "I—I meant, you’re not supposed to..." He paused, beads of sweat forming on his forehead as he racked his brain for an excuse. Finally, he blurted out, "Walk up on people like that! Are you trying to give me a heart attack?"

"Oh, sorry about that, uncle," she said with an apologetic look on her face, but the amusement in her tone suggested she wasn’t sorry at all. "We didn’t mean to scare you, and we had no idea you were coming."

Evans waved a hand, brushing off the apology before straightening his jacket. "Fine, fine. But where on earth have you two been? You haven’t been back since you left two or was it three days ago?"

Adeline turned on her heel, her hips swaying from side to side as she sauntered back to Enzo. Stopping just beside him, she reached out and slowly glided a finger down his chest.

Enzo caught on immediately and smirked. He grasped her wrist with a soft touch, his thumb tracing a slow, intimate path over the back of her hand.

Turning her head back to Evans, Adeline smiled slyly. "Oh, I’ve been at Enzo’s place. We both needed some... space."

"Space?"

Adeline nodded. "Yes. You know... couple stuffs."

"Lies!" The word echoed in Evans’s head, his eyes shifting to the tall vampire who stood there with a calm and unbothered expression. "Didn’t Dacatt say he shot this fool twice?" he thought, his gaze narrowing. "He’s supposed to be dead right now... so why is he standing here like nothing happened?"
