Adeline and Enzo stepped through the towering, rust-tinged gates of the prison, the heavy clang of iron echoing behind them. The prison air was far from fresh, heavy with metal and damp concrete.

Adeline inhaled deeply, her smile as radiant as the morning sun that filtered through the overcast sky. The moment she had been waiting for was finally here—the long-overdue confrontation with the men who had tried to end her life. After everything they had done, she was finally going to properly look them in the eye.

Behind her, footsteps shuffled with far less enthusiasm. Svetlana and her three daughters—Alessia, Everly, and Viviane—trailed after them, each wearing a somber expression. Viviane’s lips were pressed into a hard line, Everly avoided looking at anything but the floor, and Alessia’s eyes darted around nervously. All three daughters looked as though they were entering a graveyard, not a prison.

A soft sound of contentment escaped her lips, a quiet sigh that caught Enzo’s attention. He glanced down at her, a brow arched in amusement before he reached over and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her snugly to his side. "You look a bit too happy this morning," he murmured, the edge of a smirk playing on his lips.

Adeline leaned into him, her hand gliding up to his chest and settling near his heart. His familiar scent wrapped around her like a comforting blanket.

"Of course I’m happy," she replied. "I can’t wait to see the look on my uncles’ faces."

She didn’t need to look behind her to feel the venom radiating from Svetlana. It was like heat against her back, the silent fury of a woman watching her world collapse around her. Her beloved husband was now a prisoner awaiting trial, and if the justice system worked the way it was supposed to, he would rot behind bars for the rest of his life.

Adeline could practically feel the daggers being thrown at her head with every step she took. And it only made her walk straighter.

Two guards at the corner of the courtyard gestured for them to stop. "Search," one of them said gruffly, already moving in. They patted down each person one by one, checking every seam and fold. No one said a word during the process. Only when they’d finished and stepped back did the sound of approaching footsteps break the silence.

A tall man in his late forties emerged from a hallway nearby, his presence immediately commanding attention. He wore a clean-pressed navy uniform, his gold badge gleaming proudly on his chest. His salt-and-pepper hair was trimmed short beneath a black peaked cap, an easy smile pulling at his lips as he strode towards them.

He stopped in front of Enzo, nodding at the guards, who turned and left without a word.

Then, the man let out a booming, cheerful laugh. "Enzo, my boy!" he greeted warmly, extending a hand.

Enzo’s mouth twitched into a knowing smile as he extended his hand. "Mike," he said with a short chuckle, clasping the man’s hand. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

As soon as their palms touched, Mike yanked him forward into a firm hug, clapping him hard on the back. "It’s so nice to see you again, kid."

"Still got that crazy grip, I see," Enzo muttered with a laugh as they pulled apart, straightening his black suit jacket.

Mike gave a playful shrug. "What can I say? It’s muscle memory at this point."

Then, his gaze shifted, and for a moment, the smirk faltered into wide-eyed surprise. His attention landed squarely on Adeline. "And who is this angel over here?"

Enzo slid his hand to the small of Adeline’s back, giving her a small pat as he turned toward her. "This is Adeline," he said with a hint of pride in his voice. "She’s my fiancée."

Adeline offered him a small nod and a polite smile. "Hello, sir."

Mike’s jaw dropped just slightly, his eyes scanning her from head to toe as though making sure she was real. "Well, I’ll be damned," he breathed, shaking his head in disbelief. "You’re telling me Enzo Laureati finally settled down? I didn’t think I’d see the day."

Enzo’s eyes darted away, a faint flush creeping into his face. He scratched the back of his neck with a sheepish laugh, clearly wanting to move on from that subject. His past with women wasn’t exactly one he was proud of—or keen to revisit in front of Adeline.

Clearing his throat, he quickly gestured to the three women standing behind them. "This is her aunt, Svetlana... and her cousins, Alessia, Everly, and Viviane."

Svetlana remained cold and silent, while her daughters stood behind her like shadows, saying nothing.

Mike tipped his hat in their direction, the warmth fading slightly from his expression, replaced by professional detachment. "Ladies," he said curtly. Then, turning on his heel, he waved for the group to follow. "Right this way."

They trailed after him through the narrow hallway of the visitation wing, and as they walked, Mike spoke over his shoulder to Enzo.

"You know, kid... Usually this many people at once aren’t allowed for contact visitation." He paused, throwing a glance back at Enzo, his smile flashing again. "But since it’s you... I had to make an exception."

Enzo gave a soft laugh, dipping his head gratefully. "Thank you, Mike. I owe you one."

Mike chuckled, waving it off with a shrug. "Damn right you do. You know where to find me when it’s time to cash that in."

As the group walked in near-silence down the corridor, Adeline nudged Enzo’s arm—once, then again. "Hey," she said in a hushed tone. "Enzo..."

He glanced at her from the corner of his eye, then stopped behind the group. Shoving his hands into his pockets, he leaned toward her and murmured with a crooked smirk, "Yes, my love?"

She tilted her head subtly in Mike’s direction. "Who’s he? And why are you so special that you’re an exception?"

A low, warm chuckle rumbled from Enzo’s chest. "Mike’s the warden here," he replied quietly. "And an old friend of mine. We’ve known each other for years."
