Adeline backed away, re-entering the bedroom with stiff movements, and settling down on the edge of the bed.
Her elbows rested on her lap, her hands cupping her forehead as she struggled to process everything. "What am I supposed to do now? Where do I even start?"
She had walked in on her fiancé drinking blood. How was she even supposed to react to that? Her mind was a mess.
From the corner of her eye, something caught her attention. A piece of paper rested on the bedside table, a pen placed on top of it to keep it from slipping away.
She reached for the paper and hurriedly unfolded it, her gaze darting from side to side as she carefully read the words written in Enzo’s familiar handwriting. Half of it was an explanation about what he really was, why he needed blood and why he had kept it all a secret for so long.
The rest was apology after apology. He had written it over and over as if no number of times could truly express his regret.
At the bottom, he wrote: "I’ll be at my estate if you want to talk."
She stared at the paper for a long moment before tossing it aside. Then, she fell back onto the bed, lying on her back, her eyes wide as they stared at the ceiling above.
"A vampire?" The word repeated in her head like an echo. It sounded ridiculous. "Is this some sort of joke?"
But as the words left her lips, she remembered it again—those long, sharp fangs. They looked nothing like human teeth. And the unnatural speed at which he moved when he appeared behind her in an instant.
Her mind raced through every strange moment she had ever witnessed with him—things she had ignored, and the more she thought about it, the more sense it made.
All those times Enzo had saved her from bullets, he had always reacted before she had even heard them being fired. That kind of speed and awareness wasn’t normal. No normal person could do that.
She remembered the day at Miranda’s place, where he was shot twice. He had refused to go to a hospital and had Andrei pull the bullets out of him, raw, without anesthesia. And somehow, he survived it all. That wasn’t human.
She shot up into a sitting position as her mind reeled back to that night in their bed when she had laid against his chest and heard no heartbeat. She doesn’t know much about Vampires, but one thing she was sure of was that their hearts don’t beat.
She remembered asking him about it, but all she got was, "It’s always been like that since I was young."
She scoffed, the words spilling out of her mouth in a breathless mutter. "What a load of bullshit."
She had believed him and easily brushed it off, but now she felt like an idiot for not questioning it further.
After what felt like hours of thinking, piecing things together, and going over every insane detail, Adeline finally came to a conclusion. "Okay, Adeline..." she spoke to herself quietly, motioning with her hands. "This all sounds crazy, but you’ve come to a conclusion. Your fiancé... is a vampire."
As soon as the words left her lips, she paused, her hands freezing mid-air before slowly dropping back down to her lap. A long sigh escaped her, and she flopped back onto the bed. "I’m running mad, aren’t I?"
Just then, another thought hit her. "If Enzo really is a vampire, then what about Andrei? Is he also one?"
She groaned, frustration welling within her as she rubbed her face forcefully with both palms. "Oh, for goodness sake..."
Just outside her window, Vincent hung upside down in his bat form, his beady black eyes peering into the room as he observed, and his tiny ears twitching at the sound of her voice.
---
Three days passed, and Adeline remained holed up in her room, only stepping out when necessary—whether to eat, grab something, or stretch her legs briefly before retreating back inside.
She thought about going to see Enzo more times than she could count, but every single time, she ended up changing her mind. Enzo never called or messaged her either.
It was as if they were both trapped in this silent standoff, waiting for the other to make the first move.
In the mansion’s first floor, the elevator doors slid open and Evans, Alfonso, and Richard stepped out, dressed in suits, ready for work. As they made their way toward the foyer, Adeline appeared from the opposite direction, walking past them without a single word or glance in their direction.
All three of them stopped in their tracks, turning their heads to watch her enter the elevator.
Evans was the first to speak, his brows raised in curiosity. "Something must’ve happened."
Alfonso and Richard both nodded in agreement, their gazes still fixed on the elevator doors as they slid shut.
They had been watching her carefully over the past three days, noting not only Enzo and Andrei’s absence but also the sadness in Adeline’s expression. It didn’t take much for them to put two and two together—whatever had happened, it had to do with her and Enzo.
"If we’re going to make a move, it has to be now," Evans said.
---
Entering her room, Adeline shut the door behind her and swiftly locked it. As she moved toward her bed something made her pause.
Her head snapped toward the walk-in closet door, and slowly, she approached it. Opening the door, she stepped inside and moved toward Enzo’s side of the closet. It was only when she stopped in front of his section that she noticed his clothes were still there.
For the past three days, she walked in here every morning and night to change her clothes and left without even registering his belongings. It was like her mind deliberately ignored them, refusing to acknowledge their existence until now.
Her fingers reached out hesitantly, brushing against the fabric of one of his suit jackets. Without thinking, she pulled it from the rack, bringing it close to her face and inhaling. It mostly smelt like clean laundry, but beneath it, she could still smell him.
Her grip tightened on the fabric as she slowly sank down to the floor, her back resting against the closet wall. Staring down at the jacket in her hands, her fingers curled around it as conflicting emotions warred within her.
"Do I really want to keep going on like this?"
