Evelyn strolled through a secluded path lined with tall trees during her lunch break, nibbling on a snack as she walked. The path was sparsely populated, with only a handful of people walking in front of her.

A strange sensation began to creep up her spine, the unsettling feeling of being watched. She glanced over her shoulder, but the path behind her was empty.

Shrugging it off, she kept walking, trying to dismiss the feeling, but it persisted. It was as if someone’s eyes were boring into her back. Her heartbeat quickened as she tightened her grip on her half-eaten snack.

After a few more steps, she stopped abruptly, spinning around. "Hello?" she called, her eyes darting to the trees lining the path.

Seeing nothing, she let out a shaky breath and turned back to the path. Up ahead, she spotted a group of people and clutched her heart, sighing in relief before hurrying to catch up.

Once she was within earshot of the group, the disturbing feeling left her, and she relaxed. She made sure to stay close, matching their pace as they continued down the path.

Behind one of the thick trees, Dacatt emerged, his eyes tracking Evelyn as she walked away.

Adeline sped down the highway, her fingers gripping the steering wheel tightly as her focus remained glued to the road ahead. Beside her, Enzo leaned forward, flipping through the radio stations out of boredom.

He stopped when classical music began to play and relaxed back in his seat, nodding his head to the rhythm. "Now this," he murmured, "is real music."

Adeline frowned, casting a quick glance at him. "What the hell is this, Enzo?"

Enzo raised a hand, snapping his fingers and pointing toward the road. "Eyes on the road, princess. Do you even realize how fast you’re going to be shifting your gaze like that, hm?"

Adeline growled under her breath but returned her attention to the highway. "We haven’t even gone halfway to the meeting, and you’re already being annoying."

Unbothered, Enzo leaned further into his seat, humming along with the melody.

Just then, an incoming call came in, connecting through Adeline’s Bluetooth earbuds. She tapped one side, answering it.

"Adeline!" Evelyn’s voice came through the line, high-pitched and panicked. "You won’t believe what just happened to me. I was walking near the park, and I swear, it felt like someone was following me. I think—no, I know—someone’s stalking me. And not in a good way!"

"When has there ever been a good type of stalking?" Adeline asked dryly, arching an eyebrow.

"You know what I mean! I’m scared!"

"Oh, come on, Evelyn, no one’s stalking you. You’re literally the sweetest person in the world. Who would want to harm you? Hm?"

Evelyn let out a flustered chuckle on the other end. "Stop it, Addie. You’re making me blush over here."

"It’s true, and you know it."

As Adeline spoke, her gaze dropped to the fuel gauge. Her smile vanished and her eyes widened when she noticed the needle hovering close to empty. She had forgotten to check it before leaving the estate. "Oh, crap," she muttered. "How did I not notice this?"

Enzo, who was still slowly nodding his head to the music, glanced at the dashboard and gestured lazily out the window. "There’s a gas station nearby. Just take a left at the next intersection."

"Right," Adeline mumbled, her grip tightening on the wheel as she approached the red light near the intersection. She pressed her foot down on the brake pedal but nothing happened.

Her foot instinctively stomped the pedal again, harder this time. Still nothing. The car continued to speed forward.

Her breathing quickened as she began pumping the brake pedal frantically. "No, no, no. Enzo..." she whispered.

Enzo didn’t hear her, too engrossed in the music.

"Enzo!" she shouted, loud enough to snap him back to reality.

He finally turned to her, confused. "What?"

"The brakes! They’re not working!" She screamed, her voice cracking as her hands gripped the wheel tighter.

"Adeline? What’s going on?" Evelyn asked but didn’t get a response.

Enzo’s eyes darted to the road ahead, where the cars were slowing down. Then, he looked at Adeline, whose face was pale and drenched in fear.

"Hold on," he said, reaching out to grab the steering wheel. With one hand on the wheel and the other bracing against the center console, he swerved the car violently to the side, narrowly avoiding a row of vehicles. Adeline’s breaths came in short gasps as struggled to keep her eyes open, her head whipping back and forth to the car’s movements. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

The green lights at the upcoming crosswalk signaled for pedestrians to begin crossing. Some strolled casually while others hurried to beat the light.

"Watch out!" someone who had noticed the speeding car heading towards them screamed.

One of the pedestrians, a teenage girl with earphones plugged in, walked at a normal pace with her head down, focused on her phone. She was oblivious to the commotion around her—the shouting, the honking and the screeching tires.

Adeline’s eyes widened in horror as she saw the girl step further into the road. "She doesn’t see us!"

The crowd on the opposite side of the road were shouting, waving their arms, and pointing at the girl. Some tried to motion for her to stop, while others yelled warnings, but the girl didn’t hear them.

When the girl finally looked up, her face was blank with confusion as she noticed the crowd staring at her. Then, her gaze followed the panicked gestures of the crowd, and when her eyes landed on the speeding car heading directly for her, her feet froze in place out of fear.

"Enzo, watch out!" Adeline yelled, but Enzo was too preoccupied, trying to get the car back under control.

Seeing that they were moments away from a collision, Adeline’s hands shot forward, grabbing the steering wheel and yanking it hard to the right.

"No!" Enzo yelled, but it was too late. The car swerved, missing the girl by inches. But now, it was heading straight for the edge of the road.

"Adeline!" he shouted, quickly unbuckling Adeline’s seat belt and pulling her into his arms to shield her.

The car slammed into the guardrail, and then everything seemed to slow. The vehicle tipped over the edge, weightless for a moment, before gravity pulled it down.
