Andrei leaned against the whitewashed wall of the hospital hallway, absentmindedly twirling a set of car keys around his fingers. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

The sound of footsteps approaching caught his attention, and he turned his head to see Enzo walking towards him. Pushing off the wall, he stood upright and bowed his head slightly. "Master. Is Miss Adeline all right?"

Enzo let out a sigh, leaning his shoulder against the wall beside him and rubbing the back of his neck. "She’s fine. How did you even get to us so fast?"

Andrei hesitated for a second, his eyes flickering briefly to the keys in his hand before he responded, "I followed you. Forgive me."

"You followed me? Why?"

Andrei shifted uncomfortably, choosing his words carefully in his mind before he spoke. "I saw you go down the elevator with Miss Adeline. You didn’t say anything regarding where you two were headed, and... well, I got a bit worried."

"By the time I reached the foyer, you were both already gone. But as I was about to head back inside, I saw one of Miss Adeline’s uncles, Alfonso."

Hearing the name, Enzo’s eyes widened with intrigue, and he nodded, silently urging him to continue.

"He was with a man who looked like a mechanic. I saw him hand over some cash to him. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, so I followed you."

Enzo let out a low, bitter laugh. "Of course. I was right. Those idiots are so predictable."

Pushing off the wall, Enzo spun around and began walking back toward the ward Adeline was in. Over his shoulder, he called out, "You can go now. I’ll handle the rest."

Enzo pushed open the door to Adeline’s ward with his shoulder, closing it behind him with his foot and sauntering inside. Adeline, still sitting up in bed, glanced at him, her tired eyes narrowing slightly as he approached.

He plopped lazily into the chair beside her bed, crossing his arms as he leaned back. "So, it turns out I was right."

"Right about what?"

"The brakes. It was your uncle Alfonso’s doing. He didn’t mess with the brakes himself, of course. He’s too much of a coward for that. But he paid your family mechanic to do it."

Her expression turned dark, and her gaze dropped down to the blanket that covered her, her fists clenching it tightly in irritation. "That old man... Grandma almost fired him when she was alive. I’m the one who convinced her not to, and this is how he repays me?"

Enzo shrugged, absentmindedly rocking the chair back and forth. "Well, people like him only know how to bite the hand that feeds them."

"Ahh!" Adeline groaned, grabbing the pillow and burying her face in it. "I knew it shouldn’t have done that. We have to do something. This is a chance to expose Alfonso. If we interrogate the mechanic, he’ll tell the truth."

For a moment, Enzo’s face went completely blank, devoid of any emotion. Then, he exhaled heavily, his hand running through the silky strands of his dark hair. "Even if he does spill the truth, it won’t matter."

Adeline raised her head from the pillow, her eyes blinking in confusion. "What do you mean it won’t matter?"

"There’s no proof. No contract, no payment receipt, nothing tying Alfonso to the crime except the mechanic’s word. And do you know what Alfonso will do if it comes down to that? He’ll deny it. He’ll call the mechanic a liar, maybe even threaten to sue him for defamation. Without solid evidence, it’s your word against his, and Alfonso will always have the upper hand in that scenario."

For a few seconds, Adeline just stared at him before her hands suddenly shot up to grip her hair, tugging on the strands as she fell back onto the bed with a groan. "Son of a bitch!" she yelled, tossing around on the small bed.

Enzo chuckled, reaching out from where he sat and patting her head. "For now, you play dumb. Don’t confront Alfonso. Don’t question the mechanic. Pretend you don’t suspect a thing."

"They’re walking straight into the trap we’ve been setting for them. If you make a move now, they’ll scatter like rats, and we’ll lose our chance to take them all down at once."

"Fine," she said quietly, letting go of her hair and looking up at his hand. "But do you want to lose this hand of yours?"

Enzo quickly pulled away, raising both hands in surrender. "No, ma’am."

Evelyn stepped out of the taxi in front of the hospital, slinging her bag over her shoulder as her eyes trailed up the tall building. She inhaled deeply, her hand automatically reaching up to brush her long, dark hair behind her ear. "Please be here," she muttered before pulling the hospital doors open and stepping inside.

Once inside, she approached the front desk, where an old woman sat behind a computer. The woman’s graying hair was pulled into a tight, neat bun, and her glasses perched low on her nose as she stared intently at the screen.

Evelyn hesitated for a moment, unsure if the woman had even noticed her approach. She waved slightly, her hand hovering midair. "Hi..."

The old woman ignored her completely, her bony fingers tapping at the keyboard with surprising speed for her age. Evelyn shifted her weight from one foot to the other, waiting patiently as seconds ticked by.

After what felt like an eternity, the woman finally stopped typing and slowly lifted her head. She scrutinized Evelyn for a moment before asking, "What do you want?"

Thrown off by her mean tone, Evelyn chuckled awkwardly, hesitating before answering. "Uh, I was wondering if—uh, I mean, did a blonde girl, about my height—maybe a little taller—come in here? She would’ve been with a tall guy, kind of pale." Her hands gestured as if trying to illustrate the pair she was describing. "They both have blue eyes..." She trailed off, smiling nervously.

The woman’s gaze remained fixed on her, utterly unimpressed. After a long pause, she rolled her eyes and returned her attention to the computer. "You’ll have to be more specific."
