Enzo clapped his hands lightly, the sound causing Adeline's eyes to snap to his. His expression shifted to a more serious one as he leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table and steepling his fingers. "Alright. Now that I've explained myself, it's your turn. Since I saved your life, you're going to explain everything that happened yesterday. In full detail."

Adeline jerked backwards, startled by the intensity in his voice. Her instincts told her to keep quiet—after all, this man was a stranger, and she had no idea what his true motives were. But as she looked at him, she couldn't deny the logic in his request. He had saved her, brought her here, and taken care of her injuries.

"Fine. What do you want to know?"

"Everything," Enzo said without hesitation. "From yesterday morning until now. And start with your name, princess."

Adeline scowled at the nickname but complied. "It's Adeline... Adeline Smith." She looked down and rubbed her temples, trying to piece together her scattered memories. "I remember my grandmother's will being read yesterday. And—"

"What will?" Enzo asked abruptly, cutting her off. Then, catching himself, he cleared his throat and relaxed in his chair, shaking his head as if dismissing his earlier reaction. "Continue."

Adeline blinked, taken aback by his sudden interjection. She swallowed hard before she continued speaking. When she finished, she clasped her hands on her lap and slumped back in her chair.

Enzo's reaction wasn't what she expected. He threw his head back and laughed. Hearing the annoying sound, Adeline's face contorted with anger. "What the hell is so funny?" she demanded, glaring at him.

Enzo twirled lazily in his chair, his smirk returning as he wiped a tear of amusement from the corner of his eyes. "I've gotta say. Adeline, your family is quite impatient... and stupid." He shook his head in disbelief.

"Excuse me?"

He stopped spinning, leaning back in his chair as he rested his head against his knuckles, supported by the armrest. "It hasn't even been 24 hours since the will was read, and they're already trying to kill you. That's impressively idiotic."

Adeline shook her head, her eyes narrowed in confusion. "Are you saying that my family was behind the attack last night?"

Enzo rolled his eyes, as if the answer was painfully obvious. "Isn't it clear? Aren't you too pretty to be this dumb? You should've connected the dots by now."

Adeline's mouth fell open in disbelief, and she shifted back in her chair, completely baffled by his audacity. "Who the fuck are you calling dumb?"

He brushed off her outburst with a dismissive wave of his hand. "Relax, princess. It's not an insult—it's an observation. I'm just pointing out the obvious."

He watched Adeline, who was still looking at him with shock, waiting for her to retaliate, but when she didn't, he chuckled and shook his head. "Let me ask you something, Adeline. Do you have a good relationship with your family?"

The question caught her off guard, and she hesitated before shaking her head. "No," she admitted. "We've never gotten along."

Enzo let out a long sigh, rubbing the bridge of his nose in exasperation. "Of course," he muttered under his breath before looking back at her. "So let me get this straight—your grandmother's will was read, stating that you get everything. Hours later, you're nearly murdered. And you still can't figure out who's behind it? Your dumb relatives are obviously behind it."

"It's not that I haven't figured it out," Adeline muttered, her gaze falling to her clenched fists that rested on her lap. "When I was running for my life yesterday, the thought crossed my mind. But I brushed it off because I didn't think they'd go that far. I mean, it's only been a day since the will was read."

Without a word, Enzo crumpled a small piece of paper on the desk and flung it directly at her face. Adeline flinched as the paper bounced off her forehead.

"Hey!" She exclaimed, her head snapping up to glare at him, but Enzo's expression was far from apologetic.

"Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, princess. You think people wait for the 'right' time to stab people in the back?" he said, leaning back in his chair and scoffing. "Humans—" He paused, catching himself and clearing his throat. "We humans will do anything for money or power. Even if it means betraying, hurting, or getting rid of the people closest to us."

Adeline opened her mouth to argue, but Enzo raised a hand to stop her. "Don't get me wrong. There are good people out there... just not in your family."

Having heard enough, she pushed herself to her feet, her injured arm still aching as she turned towards the door. "I'm leaving."

Enzo arched a brow, watching her with amusement as she grabbed the doorknob. But before she could twist it, she felt a hand on her shoulder and froze, her breathing stopping for a second as a chill ran down her spine. Slowly, she turned her head and looked up, her wide eyes meeting Enzo's.

She glanced over his shoulder, her gaze darting to the chair he had been sitting in just moments ago. It was empty, spinning faintly. The distance between the chair and the door was too far for him to have crossed in such a short time. And she was sure that he was still sitting when she was about to touch the doorknob. She cast her gaze upward, her eyelids fluttering as she blinked rapidly, bewildered. "How the hell did you—"

He interrupted her with a low, deep-throated chuckle, silencing her mid-sentence and leaning down so his face was level with hers. "Where do you think you're going?"

Adeline's pupils darted everywhere but at his eyes. She nibbled at her bottom lip nervously before responding, "I'm going home."

Enzo let out a frustrated exhale, his hand retreating from her shoulder as he clenched his fists. Then, he knocked gently on the side of her head with his knuckles. "Hello? Is there a brain in here?" he asked mockingly.

Adeline recoiled, scowling as she swatted his hand away with her good arm. "Stop that, you bastard!"
