Back at the Smith estate, Evans stood in the kitchen, staring down at his phone while his tea sat untouched on the counter.

He had come here for his usual night tea which was a routine he never skipped, but after that call, he didn’t even want it anymore.

"What the hell happened out there," he thought.

He turned to leave, running a hand through his hair tiredly, only to nearly jump out of his skin when he saw Alfonso leaning against the doorframe.

He recoiled instinctively, a scream nearly tearing from his throat, but he swallowed it back at the last second, composing himself before scowling.

"What on earth are you doing creeping up on people?" he asked, pressing a hand to his chest to slow his racing heartbeat.

Alfonso stood there, one brow raised, arms crossed, watching him with interest. He simply shrugged, pushing off the frame and stepping into the kitchen.

"I came to drink water. I saw you here, so I figured I’d listen in on your little phone call. Judging by Dacatt’s voice, I take it things didn’t go well?"

Evans frowned, shoving his phone into his pocket. "It’s nothing. Everything’s fine."

Alfonso gave him a doubtful look, watching as Evans moved towards him, intending to exit the kitchen.

Evans expected him to step aside, but he didn’t. Instead, Alfonso just stood there, waiting. Irritation flashed through his eyes, and he reached out, shoving his younger brother aside with a firm push to the shoulder.

Alfonso let himself be moved, laughing under his breath, an—I told you so—smile curling on his lips as he turned and followed.

As they walked through the hallway in silence, neither of them spoke until they reached the elevator.

Just as Evans tapped the button, he spun around. "What do you want, brother? Didn’t you say you wanted water? I don’t see you with any."

"Dacatt told you to come meet him, yeah?" Alfonso asked, leaning against the wall beside the elevator. "I want to come with you."

Evans immediately shook his head. "No. There’s no reason for you to be there."

Alfonso raised his hand, flicking his finger from side to side in disagreement. "Oh? No, no, no, Evans."

"See, the thing is, I know something interesting is about to go down. You’re acting all tense, Dacatt sounds like he got his ass handed to him, and you’re running off to have a little meeting in the middle of the night. So why shouldn’t I come?"

"I don’t know, maybe because I said so?"

Alfonso laughed, stepping closer and clapping a hand on Evans’ shoulder. "Didn’t you just say it was nothing? If it’s really nothing, then I don’t see a problem with me coming along. And besides, we’re in this whole ’kill Adeline’ thing together, after all. You can’t say no."

Evans’ eye twitched. Sometimes, Alfonso really spoke in a way that made him hate him. He slapped his hand off his shoulder and let out a frustrated sigh. "Fine. Come along if you want. I don’t give a shit."

He stormed into the elevator and immediately tapped the button, the doors sliding shut before his brother could join him. Alfonso snickered, lifting a hand to cover his face as he shook his head in amusement.

Enzo stood near the counter with Adeline, engaged in a conversation with one of the restaurant’s staff. They had come to check up on them after the whole glass-shattering Incident.

Enzo’s gaze darted towards the glass door, his observation narrowing as he noticed Andrei standing beneath a streetlamp, his stance appearing unusual. He turned to Adeline, giving her a gentle pat on the shoulder. "Give me a moment. I’ll be right back."

She glanced up at him, giving him a subtle nod before returning back to her conversation.

Enzo made his way outside, stepping up to Andrei, and stopping just in front of him. Up close, he could see the tiny specks of sand in his usually well-groomed hair, a few stray grains clinging to the collar of his suit.

He loosely crossed his arms, his brow lifting in curiosity. "What on earth happened to you?"

Andrei bowed his head. "Forgive me, my liege. I found the shooter. But he escaped."

"And how, exactly, did a human manage to escape from you, Andrei?" Enzo asked, his expression darkening.

Andrei didn’t answer, simply lowering his head further in silent apology. He was quite disappointed in himself since he had never failed in anything like this before.

Enzo sighed, shaking his head as he turned his back to him. "Forget it. Get the car ready. Adeline says she wants to go home."

"Yes, my liege."

By the time Enzo returned, Adeline was no longer by the counter. He glanced around, only to spot her just outside the restaurant, standing near the curb and looking around, likely searching for him. A small smile curled his lips at the sight.

He walked up behind her, leaning down before planting a firm kiss on her cheek to get her attention. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Adeline’s head tilted at the sudden weight, and without looking, she reached up, her palm finding his cheek. She patted it gently before murmuring, "I’m guessing it was my uncles."

A soft hum rumbled from Enzo’s throat as he rested his chin on her shoulder. "No doubt."

To his surprise, she chuckled.

"This is the fourth time they’ve failed to kill me," she mused, her fingers absentmindedly caressing his cheek. "And the fourth time you’ve saved my life. Thank you."

Enzo’s hands slid around her waist from behind, pulling her against him. "I promised you, didn’t I? I swore I’d never let death touch you as long as I’m around. I’m simply keeping my word."

"It’s honestly kind of concerning how you always seem to know when a bullet is coming and somehow get me out of the way on time. But hey—" she shrugged lightly, "at least I’m alive. I’m not really in a position to question it."

"That’s right, my little bumblebee," he teased, pressing another lingering kiss against her cheek.
