Enzo’s eyes snapped shut as a sharp, stinging pain laced through his arm. His jaw clenched, and his muscles tensed, but after a few seconds, the pain melted away, replaced by a strange, almost pleasurable warmth that spread through his veins. His eyes reopened, a slow, approving grin curving his lips as he watched her drink.

Adeline groaned softly against his skin, lost in the intoxicating sensation. Her eyes fluttered shut, her throat bobbing with each greedy swallow. The taste of blood was unlike anything she had ever experienced. It was warm and rich, coursing through her and spreading like liquid fire.

A sting shot through his nose as his body collided with the ground, but he brushed the pain aside and scrambled up to his knees. Sweat dripped down his forehead as he strained his ears for any sign of footsteps in the hallway beyond the door. He stayed like that for several seconds—motionless, his entire body tense—but he heard nothing.

He let out a shaky breath, pressing a trembling hand against his chest, and murmuring under his breath, "Please don’t be back... Please don’t be back."

Vincent’s stomach twisted into knots as he cowered under Damien’s gaze, his eyes darting away in fear. His mind raced, scrambling to come up with an excuse—a believable lie—because he knew what was coming next.

"Where have you been, Vincent?" Damien’s voice was a lot quieter now, which only made it more terrifying.

Vincent’s throat ran dry, and he swallowed hard, his eyes flicking around the hallway, searching for an escape—even though he knew there wasn’t one. "My liege, I—"

Damien’s patience snapped. He turned Vincent and slammed him back against the stone wall. The impact knocked the air from his lungs, and before he could recover, the king’s powerful hand wrapped around his throat, lifting him just enough that his toes barely touched the floor.
