As Adeline replayed everything that happened in her mind, she shook her head in disbelief. "I just don’t get it...It’s impossible. My brakes couldn’t have failed like that. I barely drive that car, and I get it checked every two weeks."

"It was probably your family’s doing," Enzo said casually. "Someone tampered with the brakes. There’s no other explanation."

More fragments of Adeline’s memory suddenly came rushing back. She remembered the car speeding uncontrollably, the screams of the pedestrians, and the sounds of glass shattering as the car tumbled.

Her eyes widened as a particular memory came into focus: Enzo shielding her with his body, his arms wrapping around her while he promised her that he wouldn’t let her die.

Her hand unconsciously brushed over her chest, where the weight of his body had pinned her against the seat. Everything after that was still a blur—voices, footsteps, the feeling of being carried.

She turned her head away and murmured, "Thank you." The words were so faint that it seemed as though she didn’t want him to hear them.

Enzo caught the words instantly, but instead of acknowledging it outright, he decided to milk the moment. Leaning down with his face a few inches from hers, his lips curled into a mischievous smirk. "What was that?" he asked, pretending to strain his ears. "Didn’t quite catch that. Care to repeat it?"

Adeline groaned in frustration, shoving his face away with one hand. "I’m going to kill you if you don’t stop."

Enzo chuckled softly, a look of amusement on his face, as he brought his hand up and gave her head an affectionate pat. "There’s no need to thank me. I’m just keeping my promise."

He reached into his pocket, retrieving a set of keys for the Rolls Royce he had purchased for her, and held them in front of her face, dangling them teasingly. "You know....If you had taken this, this whole mess would’ve been avoided."

Adeline scoffed, crossing her arms as she looked at the keys with mild disdain. "Fine. I’ll drive your dumb car. Happy now?"

"Ecstatic," Enzo replied with a nod, tucking the keys back into his pocket before pivoting towards the door.

Back at the mansion, Evans stood in the middle of the room, his eyes glued to the flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. The news was on, and the headline dominated the screen: "Horrific Crash Downtown."

The camera footage panned to the scene of the crash. The mangled remains of the car were barely recognizable, twisted metal and shattered glass scattered across the scene. It looked like no one could have possibly survived. Emergency responders were shown working tirelessly, cutting through the wreckage.

As the reporter described the gruesome details, Alfonso strolled into the room holding a glass of red wine in his hand. He took a slow sip, savoring the taste, and walked to Evans’ side.

Noticing Alfonso’s presence, Evans turned his head slightly and glanced at him out of the corner of his eye, immediately noticing the smug smile playing on his lips. Suspicion immediately clouded his face.

The Alfonso he was currently looking at was different. He was not the type that got happy enough to actually drink wine and smile.

Taking another sip of his wine, Alfonso walked around the room, pausing by the large window where sunlight spilled onto the floors. After a moment of silence, he turned his head, his smile growing wider. "What a beautiful day, isn’t it, brother?" he mused, swirling the remaining wine in the glass.

Evans turned fully to face him. "Did you have something to do with this?"

"Have something to do with what?"

Evans gestured toward the TV, his frustration bubbling over. "Stop playing dumb, Alfonso. Did you tamper with Adeline’s car? Are you the one responsible for this?"

Alfonso’s unbothered laughter filled the room. He nodded, taking another sip of his wine. "Guilty as charged. Let’s just say I got tired of waiting. Your hitman was taking too long, so I decided to... lend a hand. I told the mechanic to mess with a few things in her car."

Evans’ face immediately twisted with anger. "You idiot! Are you trying to get yourself in trouble? Adeline and her fiancé were both in that car. You know damn well if they manage to survive this and return back here, Adeline would go straight to that mechanic. You know how people like him are. If he is threatened even for a bit, he would immediately expose you!."

Unfazed, Alfonso placed his wineglass on a nearby table and sauntered over to Evans. He rested a firm hand on his younger brother’s shoulder and gently steered him to face the TV. "Look at that, Evans," he said, gesturing to the wreckage on the screen, his voice lowering. "The car is wrecked beyond recognition. There’s no way those brats survived that."

"And don’t worry, even if they do, that mechanic has no way of proving that I made him do it. The only thing that could possibly be traced back to me would be the money transaction, but I’m not dumb. I paid him in cash."

As Evans stared at the screen, the reporter’s words echoed in his mind: "Rescue teams are uncertain if anyone could have survived such a catastrophic accident."

Alfonso shook him gently, chuckling. "I can already taste the billions, can’t you?"

As Evans thought about everything they would get if Adeline died from the crash, he found his anger slowly dissipating.

Clearing his throat, he said, "If she doesn’t survive, I suppose I owe you one for this."

Alfonso threw his head back and let out a loud, boisterous laugh, his shoulders shaking with the force of his amusement. "Oh, please. Don’t be like that," he said, patting Evans on the back.

"We’re in this together, remember? All we have to do now is sit back and wait for the call from whatever hospital they have been taken to."

Evans brushed off his brother’s hand and made his way over to the sofa, plopping down onto it with a heavy sigh. "If this works, I’ll have to call Dacatt and tell him to stop everything."

"Of course, it’ll work. You saw the car. No one’s walking away from that."

Alfonso picked up his wineglass again and took another sip, watching the news coverage with a satisfied glint in his eye. "Cheers."
