Alfonso tensed, taking a step closer to Evans, while Richard shoved off the wooden beam he’d been leaning against and rushed to his brothers’ side.

The entire time, Adeline’s mouth hung open, completely astounded by what she had just witnessed. She could name a few things she had expected Enzo to do right after he had chuckled—perhaps tell her a crazy escape plan, or run to her side and use brute force—but this was beyond anything she had imagined.

Her eyes darted to the phone Vincent held, realization dawning in her mind. A long, drawn-out "Ohhhh," escaped her lips. "So that’s why he told me to make them talk."

With a flex of his muscles, the ropes binding Enzo wrists strained, and with a quick pull, he snapped them apart as if they were nothing more than weak strings. He rose to his feet, stretching his shoulders before rubbing his sore wrists, a smug smile curling at the edges of his lips.

"Seriously? You could’ve have just done that the entire time?" Adeline asked telepathically, shaking her head in disbelief

Enzo nodded, gesturing toward Evans with a lazy wave of his hand as he spoke, "Of course. I could’ve beaten everyone here to a pulp the second I was brought in. But if I did that, how would I have gotten this idiot and his brothers to confess to their crimes, hm?"

Adeline continued to stare at him, utterly in awe. This was the man she fell in love with—the same one who annoyed the hell out of her most of the time, but also the same one who always knew exactly what he was doing. "I’m so happy right now, I could kiss this idiot," she thought to herself, feeling a rush of relief.

A smirk tugged at Enzo’s lips. "I heard that."

Her face flushed, and a short gasp escaped her lips as she realized her mistake. She hadn’t actually thought that—she had said it telepathically.

Meanwhile, Evans, now in full panic mode, pointed his gun wildly, first at Vincent, then at Adeline, then at Enzo. His chest rose and fell rapidly, his hand shaking as he barked, "What is the meaning of this?! Do you really think you’ve won? There are dozens of men outside, and they’ll kill you all if you so much as touch me!"

As if on cue, the door they had entered through, flew open with a loud crash and Andrei stepped inside, dragging two half-conscious men with bruised faces, one in each hand.

He tossed them forward like bags of garbage, their bodies hitting the floor with a dull thud. He then dusted off his hands, locking his cold gaze onto Evans. "You mean the men who are currently being arrested by cops as we speak? These two were unlucky. I found them in the hallway. Anyway, It’s over. Surrender."

Adeline, who’s knees were starting to ache from kneeling for so long, spoke, interrupting them. "Enzo, can you please untie me?"

Enzo’s gaze shifted from Andrei back to her, his eyes softening as he cracked a pitiful smile. "Of course, my dear."

Evans spun around to face Adeline, his teeth gritted in barely-contained rage. Adeline, sensing his eyes on her, tilted her head up to meet his gaze, her expression blank.

"No," Evans thought to himself, "I didn’t get this far just to be arrested. Not after everything I’ve done. If this is how it’s going to end, then I might as well finish what I started."

His fingers tightened around the pistol as he raised it, and then—he fired without aiming at a specific spot. The shot rang out, splitting the air.

Adeline instinctively pushed herself backward just before he fired, her body moving on pure reflex. Enzo, having noticed the moment Evans moved, darted forward. He had saved her from bullets before, but this time, he was just too far away and reached her one second too late. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Her body jerked as the bullet struck, a gasp escaping her lips before she collapsed onto her side.

"Adeline!"

Enzo was beside her in a flash, dropping to his knees, his hands shaking as he tore the ropes that bound her hands. The second they were off, he lifted her into his arms, cradling her against his chest.

His eyes traveled downward and when he saw the dark crimson spreading across her stomach, he shook his head, muttering, "No, no, no..."

Andrei and Vincent rushed forward, Andrei immediately kneeling beside them, while Vincent moved to kneel in front of Enzo and Adeline.

The brothers saw their opportunity and took it, turning and bolting toward the second exit.

Adeline blinked slowly, her lashes fluttering as she struggled to keep her eyes open. The sounds around her became distant, as if she were sinking into water. She parted her lips to speak, but all that came out was blood. A thin stream of red trickled down her chin.

Her body felt so heavy. She tried to lift a hand but couldn’t find the strength.

"Adeline," Enzo called desperately, patting her cheek rapidly. "Stay with me, please!"

She wanted to. She really did. She forced herself to say something, but nothing came out. She tried using the telepathy thing, but all of a sudden, she couldn’t do it anymore, as if she had forgotten how she did it.

At that moment, the only thought echoing in Enzo’s mind was that he needed to save her. If he took her to a hospital, he didn’t think she’d make it. He could already feel the life slipping from her, fading like a flame struggling against the wind. There wasn’t enough time.

Andrei placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "My liege..."

Enzo’s head snapped up, his frantic blue eyes locking onto Andrei’s. He didn’t need to hear the rest of the sentence. The look in Andrei’s eyes said it all.

The only way to save her was to turn her.

His sharp fangs elongated and he gripped the collar of her shirt, tugging it down to expose her neck, but then—he hesitated.

"Would she really want this?" he asked himself.

Immortality wasn’t some beautiful gift. It could turn into a curse. Watching the people you love grow, age, and die while you remain unchanged, untouched by time. But Enzo—he had only just met her a few months ago. He hadn’t even had nearly enough time with her.

And now, after everything they had been through, after finally succeeding—he couldn’t just lose her. Not when she was supposed to be celebrating.
