Enzo opened his mouth—then shut it. That was exactly what he had planned to do with her. But the way she worded it made it sound so dumb that he couldn’t even bring himself to admit it.

Although vampires from his world weren’t harmed by sunlight, he still didn’t like it. The day was too bright and harsh. And, god, did he hate sweating.

They preferred the night. There was something about it that felt comforting. Plus, the moonlight just looked way better than the sun.

Up ahead, Adeline spotted a convenience store and immediately veered toward it, grabbing Enzo’s wrist and tugging him along.

The second they stepped inside, the cool air-conditioning washed over them, sending a shiver down Enzo’s spine. A relaxed smile spread across his face, and he sighed in pure relief.

He leaned his head down and placed a small kiss on the side of Adeline’s head. "You just saved me, cupcake," he murmured against her temple. "If I stayed out there for a second longer, I would’ve passed out."

"You’re being dramatic," she said, rolling her eyes. "The sun isn’t even that hot."

Enzo clutched his chest. "Dramatic? Not that hot? My dear, cruel Adeline, I am melting."

"I’m getting sunscreen. Just in case," she added, turning her back at him.

Enzo leaned against one of the tall shelves beside him, stretching his arms above his head. "Alright, while you do that, get me something cold to drink. I’ll wait for you over here." He waved a dismissive hand, shooing her off.

Adeline nodded before turning and walking deeper into the store, her eyes darting around as she searched for where the sunscreen could be. She pointed a finger at different shelves, muttering the names of the items in sight as she tried to find it.

A few rows away, Dacatt moved through the aisles with a similar goal in mind. He had come in for something cold to drink, but now that he was here, he figured he might as well grab some sunscreen, too.

Finally, his eyes landed on it. There was only one can of sunscreen left, sitting alone on the shelf. He sighed with relief, stepping forward to take it, but just as his fingers were about to close around it, another hand grabbed it first. A smaller hand.

Dacatt’s grip instinctively locked around the top of the can at the same time. He looked down, ready to scowl at whoever had just snatched what he was about to take, but then he froze.

It was her. Adeline. The very girl he had been hired to kill for the past month. For a moment, neither of them moved.

She cocked an eyebrow, her expression slightly confused but mostly impatient as she tugged at the can. When it didn’t budge, she frowned, gripping it a little tighter. "Uh... can you let go, please? I need this."

She had no idea who he was or that the man holding onto the sunscreen was the same person who had almost killed her twice and shot Enzo.

Dacatt didn’t move. He barely heard what she said, but his eyes remained locked on her face, his fingers wrapped around the sunscreen in an unyielding grip.

The girl he had failed to kill, again and again, was standing right in front of him, completely unaware. And more importantly, she was alone.

Her fiancé, who had always saved her, was nowhere in sight this time around. It was as if fate had delivered her to him. Should he do it? Should he take the opportunity and finally finish the job?

His eyes flickered upward, scanning the ceiling. There were security cameras watching them. If he pulled the trigger here, it would cause chaos. The cops would be all over him before he even had the chance to disappear.

But it was still doable. This was an opportunity he might not get again. Slowly, his free hand moved. His fingers twitched as he reached behind him, his hand brushing against the grip of his silenced pistol.

Just as he was about to pull it out, a voice called from behind, stopping him cold.

"What’s taking so long, cupcake?"

Dacatt’s breath hitched. His entire body locked up as if an unseen force had wrapped around him, squeezing the life out of his lungs. His fingers trembled as his hand yanked away from his gun, moving to his side instead.

He swallowed thickly, but his throat was suddenly so dry that it barely did anything. There was something wrong with that voice that made his instincts scream at him to leave quickly.

Adeline, still oblivious to his reaction, turned toward the familiar voice. Enzo stood near the entrance of the aisle, watching the both of them with mild curiosity.

"Do you need help?" he asked, stepping closer.

"This is stupid." Dacatt thought to himself. He had no reason to react this way. It was just a damn voice. And yet, the moment Enzo spoke, it felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room.

He took a slow, shaky breath, forcing himself to move. He let go of the sunscreen, the motion so sudden that Adeline stumbled slightly.

Without a word, he turned on his heel to fully face Enzo’s direction and began walking. As he passed Enzo, he kept his head down, brushing past him as quickly as he could without making it obvious how rattled he was.

Adeline and Enzo both watched him go, confusion evident on their faces. They glanced at each other, eyebrows raised.

Enzo slung an arm over her shoulder, tilting his head toward the exit. "That was... odd. What did that guy want?"

Adeline shrugged, handing him the sunscreen. "I have no idea. He didn’t say a word. Just stared at me the whole time."

Enzo let out a soft hum, his mind wandering as he fiddled with the sunscreen in his hand, tossing it up briefly before catching it. His gaze lingered on the door the man had disappeared through, his eyes narrowing suspicously, but he eventually shook it off.
