A sharp intake of breath escaped Adeline’s lips as she lowered her gaze to his hand, her eyes widening in surprise before she jerked her head up. But just as her eyes met his, Enzo pressed two fingers onto the top of her head, pushing it back down gently.

"No," he said. "You’re not going over there like that."

Adeline huffed, swatting his hand away. "Fine! Get your hands off me."

Turning back toward the bartender’s direction, she took a deep breath, gathering the courage to approach him. Just then, one of the servers passed by carrying a tray of drinks. She snatched one of the glasses without even looking at the tray, ignoring the server’s surprised glance.

She brought the drink to her lips and closed her eyes, downing it in one go. The moment the liquid hit her throat, she regretted it. Her eyes shot wide open, and a violent burn spread through her chest. Whiskey.

She coughed, her throat raw and her eyes watering as she hit her chest with a fist, trying to ease the burning sensation. The intensity of the whiskey left her gasping for air, and she shoved the now-empty glass into Enzo’s hand. He accepted it with an amused, yet puzzled, look, watching her dab at the corners of her eyes to wipe away the tears that had sprung up.

With her voice hoarse from the burn, she cleared her throat and glanced up at him. "Observe," she croaked, mimicking his earlier words before squaring her shoulders and marching toward the bartender.

"What an odd girl," Enzo murmured.

As she neared the counter, the bartender was engrossed in the task of filling the bar fridge with bottles of wine, his back to her. She cleared her throat to get his attention, taking a seat on one of the empty bar stools.

The bartender swiveled his head, stealing a cursory glance over his shoulder before pivoting his body to face her fully. Taking in her appearance, his tired eyes brightened, and a warm smile spread across his face. "Well, hello there. What can I get for you?"

Adeline chuckled, shaking her head. "I’m not here to drink. I was hoping to ask you something, if it’s not a bother."

"Of course not." He placed the bottle he was holding down and pulled a stool closer, sitting down with his forearms resting on the counter near hers. "Go ahead."

From across the bar, Enzo watched the both of them closely, his grip tightening around the wineglass in his hand. His blue eyes darkened as they flickered between her and the bartender, and a small frown crept onto his face.

Then, realizing his own reaction, he sighed and set the glass down on a nearby table. He exhaled heavily, rubbing his temples to shake off whatever weird feeling that was gnawing at him. "What the hell is wrong with you, Enzo?" he thought to himself.

Adeline considered using flattering words to coax the bartender at first, but she quickly dismissed the idea due to her not having the energy for that. Instead, she opted to be direct with her request. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"I’m looking for someone," she said, tapping her fingers lightly against the counter. "I don’t know his name."

"Oh yeah? Do you at least know what he looks like?"

She nodded. "Yeah. He has white hair, is about six feet tall, and he smokes a lot." She paused for a moment, her brow contracting as she tried to recall the last detail. Then it hit her, and she snapped her fingers and added, "Oh! And he looks like he’s in his thirties."

The bartender emitted a little laugh, nodding his head. "Sounds like you’re talking about Elijah."

"Elijah?" she repeated.

"Yeah. He’s the only one around here that fits that description."

"Do you know where I can find him?"

The bartender lifted his hand and pointed behind her. She turned her head to where he was pointing, and her gaze landed on a door at the far corner of the bar, guarded by two security guards.

"He’s always in there. Though, he does come out sometimes."

She turned back to him, curiosity burning in her eyes. "Why? Is there another bar back there? Like a VIP section or something?"

"No idea." The bartender said with a shake of his head. He stood up, grabbing the bottle of wine again as customers began to approach his counter.

"I’m just a bartender here. None of us have ever been behind that door."

Before she could ask anything else, he gave her hand a gentle pat on the shoulder. "Excuse me, beautiful. I gotta get back to work."

"Right." She bobbed her head before sliding off the stool. "Thank you very much."

As she stood up and began making her way back to Enzo, she thought to herself, "Well, that was easier than I expected."

Upon reaching Enzo, her hands shot out and grabbed his arm, turning him toward the guarded door at the far end of the bar. "The bartender said his name is Elijah. He works in there. We just need to figure out how to get inside."

Enzo’s eyes narrowed as he studied the two broad-shouldered security guards standing beside the door. They were built like tanks, their arms crossed over their chests, eyes sweeping the room with boredom.

"I could easily take them out, but this place is too crowded. It would draw too much attention."

Adeline sighed, releasing his arm as she rubbed her forehead tiredly. "Then how are we supposed to get in?"

He shrugged. "The only way I can see it happening is if those two are distracted somehow. Get them to step away, even for a few seconds."

"Yeah, no shit," Adeline said, rolling her eyes. "It’s not like we’re supposed to go over and ask them nicely to let us through."

As if the universe had heard Enzo, a loud crash suddenly echoed through the bar, followed by the sound of shattering glass and a string of angry curses. Instinctively, both of them turned their heads in the direction of the sound.

A fight had broken out in the corner of the bar, and one of the men involved was already bleeding, clutching at his arm, while another stood over him with his fists clenched. The surrounding people began to gather, their murmurs growing louder as they jostled for a better view.
