Vincent sat in the backseat, eyes fixed down at his tightly clenched hands, which rested on his lap, the car engine humming softly. His palms were damp with sweat as he replayed the conversation he was about to have in his head.

Enzo, sitting in the driver’s seat, adjusted the rearview mirror until his cold blue eyes met Vincent’s anxious reflection. His lips curled into a sardonic smirk as he broke the silence. "I see you’ve been having a blast spying on me these past weeks, haven’t you?"

Vincent’s head jerked up in shock, his eyes growing wide like twin saucers.

"You... you knew?"

Enzo let out a short, humorless scoff and returned his eyes to the road. "Oh, please," he drawled, gripping the steering wheel with one hand while leaning back lazily.

"I could sense you the moment you stepped foot into this world. The only reason you’ve been able to walk around freely is because I’ve been too busy to bother with you. Consider it mercy."

"You must have a reason for finally showing your face. So, let’s hear it. What do you want, Vincent? Make it quick—I have important matters to take care of."

Vincent’s throat contracted, a lump forming as he swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down in his neck.

His clammy hands clutched at his trousers as he said, "I... I came to talk about something important."

"Obviously," Enzo replied, getting impatient. "Out with it, already."

Vincent inhaled shakily before nodding again. "Your father believes... that girl is the reason you won’t come back to our world."

"How does he know about Adeline?" Enzo asked, even though he already knew the answer to that question.

Vincent shrank further into his seat. He regretted coming to meet him more and more with each passing second. But he had no choice. That was the only way he could deliver his father’s message to him. He could’ve written him a letter instead, but Enzo barely ever read them.

"I... I told him," he admitted, wishing he could take the words back.

"Of course you did."

Vincent raised a finger and added, "I had no choice..."

"Shut up," Enzo snapped, cutting him off. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "I’ve been ignoring my father’s letters and his demands long before I ever met Adeline. If he thinks she’s the reason I’m staying away, he’s an even bigger fool than I thought."

"But..." Vicent murmured.

"But what?!" Enzo barked, slamming his hand on the steering wheel. The loud thud echoed through the car, and Vincent flinched, sitting up straighter, trembling like a leaf.

"Speak up, dammit!"

The words came out in a quivering whisper as Vincent fought to speak, his lips shuddering. "H-he said if you don’t return in three months... he’s coming here himself. A-and the girl won’t be safe. He’ll kill her."

Enzo’s head rested against the back of the seat, and for a brief moment, he remained silent. Then, unexpectedly, a deep laugh burst forth from his chest.

Vincent blinked in confusion, watching as Enzo’s laughter abruptly stopped. The amusement in his eyes vanished, replaced by a terrifying glare. "Tell my father that I dare him. I won’t let him lay a single finger on Adeline. He can send his threats, his men, or come himself—I don’t care."

Vincent opened his mouth to protest, but Enzo wasn’t done yet. He snapped his fingers, signaling him to remain quiet.

"And while you’re at it, make sure he knows this too: Adeline isn’t just some girl. She’s my fiancée. We’re getting married soon."

"F-fiancée?!"

"That’s right," Enzo confirmed with a smirk. "So even if I was considering going back to our world in the future—which I wasn’t—it’s impossible now. I won’t leave Adeline’s side for anyone."

Vincent chuckled nervously, shaking his head and waving his hands frantically. "I... I can’t tell him that! He’ll be right here in a heartbeat to kill her the moment he hears it!"

Enzo started the engine, indicating to Vincent that it was time to get out.

He stepped down, closing the door behind him and walking over to stand next to the front passenger seat.

Enzo rolled down the window, his eyes meeting Vincent’s terrified ones. "Whether you tell him or not doesn’t matter. With how easy you are to read, he’ll figure it out anyway."

Rolling the window back up, Enzo drove off, the tires kicking up a small cloud of dust as the car sped away. Vincent stood frozen in place, his mouth slightly agape, looking like he’d just seen a ghost.

2 WEEKS LATER----

Dacatt leaned casually against the side of the black van parked discreetly across the street, a cigarette lazily resting between his fingers. His eyes were fixed on the glass doors of a jewelry store, watching as Evelyn stepped inside. Nodding his head and raising his phone to his ear, he spoke to the person on the other end. "She’s inside."

Without waiting for a reply, he ended the call, flicked the cigarette to the ground, and stomped it out with his boot. He tossed a quick glance around to make sure nobody was watching him before slipping into the driver’s seat of the van and shutting the door.

About ten minutes later, Evelyn emerged from the store with a small velvet box in her hands. She delved into her pocket and retrieved her phone, unlocking the device and dialing a number.

Meanwhile, Adeline sat cross-legged in front of her vanity mirror, her attention focused on the tiny black spot on her fingertip. She pressed the pad of her finger against her palm, wincing slightly at the small sting. Her phone buzzed on the desk beside her, breaking her concentration.

She picked it up and answered without even glancing at the caller ID.

"Hello?"

On the other end, Evelyn’s cheerful voice greeted her. "Adeline! Hey, are you ready?"

Adeline pulled the phone away from her ear, squinting at the screen to check the caller ID. Evelyn’s name on the screen, she furrowed her brow in confusion, pondering whether they had made any plans together.

"Uh... ready for what?" she asked hesitantly, bringing the phone back to her ear.

"For our friendship anniversary, silly! Don’t tell me you forgot!"
