Damien’s voice, while firm, was quieter this time. "Never lie to me again, Vincent. No matter how small it may seem. Do you understand?"

Vincent sniffled, nodding quickly, eager to appease him.

Damien held his gaze for a moment before standing to his full height, grabbing Vincent’s arm, and pulling him up with him. "Go rest," he ordered. Then, turning away, he added, "Summon Argilia first thing in the morning."

Vincent bowed his head before turning toward the door, his legs weak beneath him as he walked out.

Smith Mansion, 5 A.M.

Adeline lay sprawled on the bed, clad in black pajama pants and a matching long-sleeved shirt, her blue eyes fixed on the ceiling.

Enzo sat beside her, shirtless, wearing only matching black pajama pants, his back resting against the headboard. A book was open in his hands, and perched on the bridge of his nose were the non-medicated glasses he had bought back then. He hummed absently, flipping a page, completely absorbed in the words before him.

The two of them had been like this for hours, neither able to sleep.

Adeline groaned, yanking the pillow from underneath her head and pressing it against her face. "Why the fuck can’t I sleep?" She whined, her voice muffled against the fabric.

Enzo’s ears twitched, catching her words. He didn’t respond immediately, instead quickening his reading pace, eager to finish the last few lines before putting the book down. Within seconds, he had reached the end of the page, snapping the book shut and placing it on the bedside counter.

Turning toward her, he reached over and tugged the pillow away from her face, revealing her frustrated pout. He smiled warmly as he extended his hands towards her, his voice gentle as he said, "Come here."

Adeline lifted a brow. "What?"

He wiggled his fingers, nodding. "Come on."

Huffing, she pushed herself up onto her knees and crawled toward him. She halted beside him and tilted her head, waiting for an explanation.

Enzo reached out and grasped her hips, pulling her into his lap. He positioned her so that she was straddling his hips, her knees pressed into the mattress on either side of him.

He planted a tender, lingering kiss on her cheek, then leaned his head back, creating a slight space between them, his gaze holding hers as he murmured, "You can’t sleep like you used to anymore. You’re struggling to do so because you’re a vampire now," he explained. "You can still rest, but not like before. Maybe an hour or two at most. His hand glided upwards to her face, his thumb lightly tracing along her lower lip. "Can I see your fangs, my love?"

Adeline parted her lips, and slowly, her fangs elongated, gleaming under the soft glow of the bedside lamp. He watched closely, nodding in approval. "You’re getting the hang of it."

A sigh escaped her lips as she looped her arms around his neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder. "Being a vampire is torture," she muttered against his skin.

Enzo clicked his tongue, feigning hurt. "Come on, it’s not that bad. The only real downsides are that you can’t eat human food anymore or sleep as much as you used to."

She remained quiet, her body still. For a moment, it seemed as if his words hadn’t fully registered, but then, her head shot up, brows furrowed as she stared into his face. "Wait... What did you just say?"

Enzo blinked before repeating, "I said the only downsides to being a vampire are that you can’t eat or—"

She pressed a finger against his lips, silencing him. "I can’t what?"

Enzo chuckled, grasping her wrist before she could pull away, and began pressing a series of gentle kisses against her skin, his voice lowering into a soothing murmur. "Vampires don’t eat food, Adeline. Only blood. Everything else won’t taste like it used to anymore."

Adeline froze, her eyes wide in horror as she stared at him as if he had just spoken in a foreign language. Then, she yanked her wrist free from his hold and pushed herself off him before bolting off the bed.

Enzo sat there with his arms spread out, watching her retreat with confusion etched across his face. "Adeline?" he called after her. "Where are you going?"

She didn’t answer. She darted towards the door and grabbed the handle, wrenching it open and rushing out.

Enzo sighed, raking a hand through his hair before reaching for the black shirt draped over the bed. He pulled it over his head as he rose to his feet, rolling his shoulders as he made his way to the door.

Stepping into the hallway, he glanced left and right, but Adeline was nowhere in sight. Of course, she’s a vampire now, meaning she’s fast—faster than she used to be.

Turning toward the direction that led to the elevator, he strode forward, already knowing she would be heading there. When he rounded another hallway, his sharp eyes caught a swish of blonde hair disappearing around the corner near the elevator.

As he approached the elevator, Adeline stood inside, furiously tapping the close button. The doors were already sliding shut, but before they could close completely, Enzo was already in front of them, his hand shooting out to stop them. The metal doors slid open again with a mechanical whirr, revealing his fiancée.

His blue eyes locked onto hers, his expression unreadable. "It’s five in the morning, Adeline. Where on earth are you going?"

"The kitchen," she said simply.

She reached for his arm, gripping it firmly and pulling him inside. His eyes widened at how easily she had yanked him inside, but then he remembered she had vampire strength now—she just doesn’t realize it yet. The doors slid shut, and the elevator hummed as it began descending.

Standing beside her, Enzo adjusted his slightly rumpled shirt. His eyes flicked down to the floor, a breath of amusement escaping him as he shook his head. It was only now that he realized they were both barefoot.
