Enzo was relieved that she didn’t press the issue further, because he had no idea how to even explain it to her. No human had senses as sharp as a vampire’s. And he couldn’t just say it was instinct—that would be impossible.

Shifting the topic, he murmured against her skin, "Are you sure you want to go home? We can go somewhere else instead—maybe see a movie?"

Adeline paused at that, her lips pursing slightly as she thought about it.

A movie did sound nice. She tried to recall the last time she had been to a theater, but nothing came to mind. It had been ages since she’d last gone to one of those.

She nodded. "Alright."

Enzo smiled, pleased with her answer.

As they stood there, waiting for Andrei to return with the car, a buzz sounded from Adeline’s purse, and she dug her hand inside, pulling out her phone.

Evelyn’s name flashed across the screen, the soft glow illuminating her face. She hadn’t spoken to her in a while, but she wasn’t really in the mood for a call right now.

"I’ll call her back once I get home," she thought, sliding the phone back into her purse.

The bar buzzed with low chatter and the hum of classic rock playing through the overhead speakers. Evans sat in one of the booths, tapping his index finger repeatedly against the wooden table.

His gaze flickered toward Alfonso, who sat beside him, bobbing his head to the music, completely unbothered, and his eye twitched. His brother’s indifference in moments like these always made his blood boil, but what was he supposed to do—tell him to stop being unbothered? He wasn’t the cause of his unease.

After a short while, Dacatt approached their booth, wearing dark jeans and a hoodie with the hood pulled low over his face. His movements were sluggish, his steps uneven, and when he finally slumped down into the chair opposite them, a deep groan of pain escaped him.

Both Evans and Alfonso cocked their heads at the same time, curious.

Dacatt reached up and yanked the hood down, and when his face came into video, Alfonso visibly recoiled.

His lips were busted and swollen, his cheekbone was darkened with an ugly bruise, and there was dried blood crusted near his nostril.

Alfonso sucked in a breath through his teeth, grimacing, his nose scrunching as he leaned back in his chair. "Oof." His eyes scanned Dacatt’s face before he shook his head. "You look like you were used as a punching bag."

Dacatt glared at him, and Evans growled under his breath before spreading his legs and hitting Alfonso’s knee with his.

Alfonso’s gaze darted toward him, scoffing, but Evans ignored him, turning his full attention to Dacatt.

"What happened?"

Dacatt laughed harshly, shaking his head. "What do you think happened? I was almost beaten to death by that crazy bastard of a bodyguard that follows your niece’s fiancé around." He shifted uncomfortably, wincing as pain flared through his ribs. "My escape was a fucking miracle."

Alfonso snorted in amusement, but Evans didn’t even need to say a word this time. The glare he sent his way was enough to wipe that grin off his face.

Alfonso held up his hands in mock surrender before looking away.

Evans sighed before leaning in closer, placing both hands on the table. "How did that even happen? All you had to do was shoot Adeline and leave."

Dacatt’s hand clenched into a tight fist before he slammed it onto the table.

The impact sent a dull throb shooting up his arm, making his body tremble with pain. He stooped his body, burying his face against the wooden surface and gritting his teeth.

He stayed like that for a moment, waiting for the pain to subside even the slightest bit. When it dulled just enough for him to breathe properly, he lifted his head with a strained sigh and shot Evans a look.

"Do you really think it’s that fucking easy? I was properly hidden. He shouldn’t have been able to find me, but somehow he did. I don’t even know how."

He then jabbed a warning finger in his direction. "Listen to me." His voice turned dead serious. "That Enzo guy—both him and his bodyguard? They aren’t normal. There’s something really off about them."

"What do you mean?" Evans asked.

"I don’t have the strength to explain it right now, but what I saw today? It was beyond me. Those two? They’re not normal human beings. Hell, I don’t even think they are human."

Alfonso found his words as just ridiculous excuses for failing his job and getting beat up on top of it. He tried holding back, but couldn’t and burst out laughing, his shoulders shaking as he clutched his stomach. "Oh—oh goodness—" he wheezed. "So what are they then, huh? Aliens? Demons? Vampires? Maybe Enzo’s secretly a werewolf."

Evans kicked him hard under the table again. "Be serious, dammit!"

Dacatt snapped, his bruised face twisting in anger at Alfonso’s obnoxious laugh. If he still had his gun, he would’ve pulled it out and shoved it right at Alfonso’s head—just to shut him up.

But he didn’t since he lost his precious silenced pistol during the fight. "Do you think this is a fucking joke?" he asked, his gaze flickering between the two brothers.

"I’m being serious. If you know what’s good for you—back off. Those guys are more dangerous than you think."

Evans’ face contorted in confusion, his eyebrows drawing together as he spread his arms out wide. "What the hell do you mean back off? After all the money and time I’ve wasted on this, you expect me to just back off?"

The hitman pushed himself up from the booth with a groan, adjusting his hoodie before fixing Evans with a tired stare. "You can do whatever the fuck you want. But as for me? I’m done. I quit."

Evans’ eyes widened, shock momentarily paralyzing him before anger took over. He shot up from his seat so fast that the table shook, his hands balling into fists. "What the fuck do you mean you quit?"
