Damien exhaled, long and slow. The sigh wasn’t angry—but it was filled with disappointment, maybe even pity. "So be it," he murmured. "It seems you’ve chosen the hard way."
He turned his head slightly and gave a simple nod to Argilia.
She responded with a gentle dip of her chin, her delicate hands lifting into the air. A few feet ahead of her, the ground near her rumbled, and with a violent crack, two thick chains erupted from the earth like awakened serpents, both aimed directly at Enzo and Adeline. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Enzo reached back, his hand slamming against Adeline’s shoulder, shoving her several steps away from him. "Stay back," he ordered. His fists clenched, knees bending as he braced himself for whatever was about to come.
Andrei, who was standing beside him, mirrored his stance.
But Damien laughed, a humorless sound. "Even you, Andrei? You would raise your hand against me?"
At that moment, Damien vanished from where he stood, appearing right behind Andrei, his hand clamping down on his arm with crushing force.
Then, like throwing a rag, he flung him sideways. Andrei’s body flew across the road, spinning through the air before slamming into a tree. He let out a strained groan, collapsing to the ground with a grimace, pain etched across his face as he hissed through his teeth.
Enzo had barely turned when Damien grabbed him by the shirt beneath his jean jacket, lifting him off the ground with ease before driving him down the asphalt.
Enzo coughed, air knocked from his lungs and his body curling slightly in pain.
"Enzo!" Adeline gasped, taking a step forward, but she froze instantly.
Both of Argilia’s chains zoomed toward her, their jagged, metallic ends aimed straight for her chest.
Her eyes widened—but she didn’t retreat. Her fangs elongated, her hands snapping out as the chains neared.
A loud rattling sound echoed through the quiet road as her fingers wrapped around both chains—one in each hand— just before they struck, stopping them mere inches from her chest. The impact jarred her arms, sending a shockwave down her muscles, and the force behind them also pushed her back half a step, but she didn’t let go.
Argilia’s expression flickered into a small frown. She curled her fingers backward, and the chains obeyed, yanking themselves back but also dragging Adeline with them like a hooked fish.
She stumbled once, nearly falling, but planted her feet, anchoring herself to the road with a groan. She clenched her jaw, every muscle in her arms and shoulders straining as she wrestled the chains, her shoes dragging shallow marks behind her.
"No," she hissed through gritted teeth. With a low growl, she spun hard on her heels, rotating with the chains still clutched in her hands. The momentum dragged them sideways, the steel scraping with a screech as they stretched to their limits.
Argilia’s eye twitched in irritation as she noticed the area where the chains had burst from shifting subtly.
Adeline let out a guttural cry, and with one final, full-force pull, she ripped the chains completely out of the ground. Stone, dirt, and the broken ends of the chains whipped wildly in the air before falling to the ground.
She stood panting, her hands still gripping the chains as they hung limp. Just then, the chains trembled before shattering like glass, dissolving into nothingness.
Across from her, Argilia blinked once, genuine surprise flickering across her features. But then, just as quickly, her expression softened into amusement as she remembered something. "You’ve got quite the strength." She chuckled. "But then again, I shouldn’t expect anything less from a human turned by Lord Damien’s offspring."
Lifting her hand once again, she flicked her fingers, and the ground beneath Adeline cracked open.
Four chains burst from the earth, instantly wrapping themselves around her. They snaked around her from her waist to her chest, pinning her arms tightly to her sides before lifting her clean off the ground.
She let out a short gasp, struggling as her legs kicked in the air, but the chains didn’t budge.
Below her, Argilia stared up with a look of bored detachment. She didn’t want to be here—not really. She could be at home in her manor right now, lounging in silk robes, sipping blood, or brushing her hair. But instead, here she was, standing in the middle of a miserable plane of road and trees, under dark skies, helping Damien retrieve his spoiled, willful son.
All because she’d told Damien she’d help—back when they crossed paths at Councilor Petrov’s estate. But then again, even if she hadn’t, Damien would’ve probably still convinced her to help.
Her eyes lazily drifted to Damien, who stood over Enzo, still downed from the earlier attack. She sighed to herself. "Just get it over with already."
A flicker of movement cut through the air, and her ears twitched. Without turning her head, she flicked her hand to the right just as Andrei appeared, his fist mid-swing, aimed straight for her head. He’d tried to land a punch, but it was too late.
Two chains shot up, coiling around his waist and chest before he got too close, locking his torso in place. Two more snapped out, wrapping around each of his wrists—one holding the fist he’d aimed to punch with, the other catching his slightly lifted arm and pinning it to his side.
Andrei’s body froze helplessly, restrained mid-attack. He glared at her but said nothing.
Argilia let out a soft chuckle, finally turning to face him fully. As she did, her attention flickered briefly, and the chains holding Adeline shattered, vanishing into the air like the first set.
She let out a startled scream as she dropped, landing roughly on her feet. She stumbled forward before falling to her knees, clutching her chest as she gasped for breath.
Argilia ignored her. She stepped closer to Andrei, reaching up to gently rest her hand against his cheek, her fingers tracing the outline of his face. "You’re fast, Andrei," she murmured with the ghost of a smile. "But not fast enough."
Andrei didn’t speak, his face remaining blank, and his eyes fixed on hers.
Argilia’s fingers moved beneath his chin, tilting his head to the side, examining him. "You’ve grown quite a lot since the last time I saw you."
