Enzo, lying on his side, gave Vincent a deadpan look, his expression tired.

Snapping out of his stunned stupor, Vincent pushed himself to his knees and hurriedly crawled to Enzo’s side. Gently, he reached out and nudged his shoulder, trying to help him lie flat.

Enzo’s body shifted, his back now against the floor, and his weary gaze flickering up toward the high ceiling. With a soft, dry chuckle, he tilted his head toward Vincent and said, "This position isn’t any better, you know."

Vincent, clearly overwhelmed, ignored the comment, his hands hovering uncertainly over Enzo’s form, careful not to touch the chains as his mind raced. His eyes swept over the length of them—shoulder to waist, arms pinned tightly.

"These... these are Councilor Argilia’s chains..." Vincent murmured.

Enzo gave a slow, tired nod, his eyes fluttering half-closed. "Mhm. Father came to the human world with her. Didn’t you know?"

Vincent shook his head quickly. "N-No, my liege. I’ve been away on an errand outside the castle for the past few days. I only just returned an hour ago."

Before another word could pass between them, the wall Enzo had fallen out of rippled again.

Vincent’s head snapped toward it just as Argilia gracefully stepped through. She moved aside, casting a glance over her shoulder as Damien emerged next.

Vincent quickly scrambled to his feet and stepped back, lowering his head and bowing deeply. "My lord."

Damien’s sharp eyes swept across the hallway, the cold glint in his gaze flickering over the scattered papers littering the floor before settling on Vincent. His brow furrowed slightly, and irritation flashed in his expression as he spoke. "What happened here?"

Vincent bowed even deeper, his shoulders trembling slightly as he squeezed his eyes shut. "M-My apologies, my lord... It was an accident."

Still on the floor, Enzo didn’t glance toward Damien or Vincent, his blue eyes staring blankly up at the towering ceiling. His expression was unreadable, the only sign of life being the slow, steady rise and fall of his chest.

Damien gave an annoyed grunt under his breath before stepping toward Enzo’s figure. He reached down, his fingers curling into the back of Enzo’s collar, and with a rough tug, yanked his son up into a sitting position.

"Clean this up," he ordered. Without waiting for a response, he turned on his heel and began walking, dragging Enzo’s form behind him across the floor.

Enzo let out a quiet, tired sigh, his head tipping back slightly to catch a glimpse of the back of Damien’s dark head. "I can walk on my own, Father."

Damien gave a sharp jerk of his arm, pulling the fabric of Enzo’s shirt tight against Enzo’s throat, making him wince. "Be quiet," he said flatly.

Argilia, still standing near Vincent, watched in silence. After a brief moment, she turned to Vincent, offering the young vampire a small nod before pivoting and following Damien.

Vincent stood alone now, watching their retreating figures as they rounded a corner and disappeared down the corridor. He crouched and began gathering the scattered papers, his fingers trembling as thoughts stormed through his mind.

"Where’s Andrei? And what happened to the girl? Did... did Damien kill her?" He froze, the question hitting him like a blow. Shaking his head quickly, he forced the thought away. "No... no, surely not."

He drew in a slow, shaky breath and continued picking up the papers.

Back in the human world.

The door to Adeline’s room creaked open, and she stepped inside, her shoulders slumped and her hand pressed to her forehead. Her eyes were puffy and red, her cheeks flushed from crying.

She moved without really thinking, her feet carrying her to the couch where she sank down heavily, burying her face into her hands. A quiet sniffle escaped her, then another. She pressed her palms harder against her face, trying to stop the tears, but it was no use.

Moments later, the door clicked open and Andrei entered the room. He closed and locked the door behind him, then crossed the space, stopping just beside the couch.

He reached out, his hand hovering awkwardly for a second before settling in a gentle pat on Adeline’s back. "Miss Adeline...?" he murmured.

Adeline lifted her head just slightly, swiping the back of her hand across her damp face as she sniffed. "What?"

Andrei stood there, staring down at her for a few seconds, his mouth parting as if to speak, but no words coming out. Comfort had never been his strength, and even if it were, what could anyone possibly say in a moment like this?

"I’m... I’m sorry," he finally said.

Adeline gave a sharp, bitter scoff and sat up straighter, brushing another tear away with the heel of her palm. "What’s sorry going to do? Why did that man take Enzo? I need an explanation, Andrei, not a sorry..."

Andrei let out a long, quiet sigh, his shoulders sagging slightly. "You look tired, Miss Adeline." With that, he turned, walking toward the door. "I’ll be right back," he called softly over his shoulder.

Adeline twisted on the couch, a puzzled frown pulling at her brow as she watched him leave, but she didn’t say anything. She simply stared as the door closed behind him.

Left alone, she sighed and leaned back into the couch cushions, her head tilting back until she was staring up at the ceiling.

Her mind raced, replaying everything that had happened. One moment she was happy with Enzo, on the way to what should have been a fun night—and the next, her world had crumbled. A man she’d never seen before, appeared out of nowhere, and within minutes... Enzo was gone.

She squeezed her eyes shut tightly, her throat tightening as another wave of tears spilled down her cheeks. She wasn’t even crying anymore, but the tears just kept falling.

About two minutes later, the door opened again, and Andrei stepped in. In one hand, he carried a dark leather suitcase, and in the other, a wine glass delicately pinched between his fingers.

Adeline didn’t stir and kept her eyes shut. She was aware of his presence but was too tired from crying to acknowledge him.
