Evelyn took a deep breath, her gaze dropping to the floor as she digested everything Adeline had just revealed to her. "This is insane. And this kidnapping... you think they did this, too?"

Adeline’s head bobbed up and down, signaling her agreement. "I think they’re starting to suspect that I’m up to something. And since you’re my best friend, they probably thought you’d know about it. That’s why they targeted you."

"That makes sense," Evelyn admitted. She paused for a moment before looking up at Adeline. "But Adeline... why didn’t you tell me any of this before? I’m your best friend. If you’d told me this a long time ago, I still wouldn’t have said anything. Even if they kidnapped me or... tortured me. I would never betray you."

"I know," Adeline said in a low voice, rubbing her arm uneasily. "I’m sorry..."

There was a brief pause, during which Evelyn’s lips pressed into a thin line. Suddenly, she broke into laughter, surprising Adeline. Grabbing her arms, she pulled her into another tight hug.

"It’s fine. I get it. I mean, I can be quite talkative sometimes, but you don’t have to keep me in the dark anymore, okay? I’m here for you. And I promise, everything you just told me? It stays with me."

Enzo walked over to the window where the man had escaped from, his eyes narrowed as he looked outside. The backyard was cluttered, with overgrown weeds and broken-down furniture scattered about. Just ahead, he spotted a smaller gate near the far edge of the yard. He could see footprints in the dirt leading toward it.

"Looks like he escaped through there," he muttered to himself.

He emitted a soft scoff and pivoted away from the window, sauntering back towards Adeline and Evelyn. Clapping his hands, he said, "Alright, that’s enough hugging. Andrei will get you both home safely, and I’ll stay back to check out a few things."

Adeline stepped forward, shaking her head. "No, I’m staying back too."

Evelyn glanced between them, confused. "Adeline—"

Adeline spun to look at her best friend and gently placed her hand on her shoulder. "Will you be alright? Can you trust Andrei to get you home safely?"

Evelyn briefly eyed Andrei, who stood near the door, and gave a subtle upward tilt of her head. "I’ll be fine. This isn’t the first time I’ve met him."

Satisfied, Adeline turned back to Enzo, crossing her arms as she stared up at him.

Enzo averted his gaze, shrugging nonchalantly. "Fine. Take her home, Andrei."

Andrei executed a slight bow and approached Evelyn, placing his hand on her back to lead her toward the door.

Evelyn cast one last look at Adeline and waved goodbye before leaving with him.

The second Adeline turned back around, she nearly jumped out of her skin. Enzo’s face was inches from hers, his blue eyes locking onto hers with an amused glint.

"Are you worried about me?" he teased, wiggling his brows playfully. "Is that why you’re staying? Because you just can’t bear the thought of leaving me, your fiancé, behind?"

She rolled her eyes, irritably shoving his face away with a scoff. "As much as I hate to admit it, yes, I’m worried. You just saved my best friend. The least I can do is make sure you’re safe."

Enzo straightened up, his head tilting slightly to the side as he raised an eyebrow. "Make sure I’m safe? Let me ask you something—if that kidnapper came back right now with a gun, what exactly would you do to protect me?"

Adeline’s eye twitched involuntarily, her hands balling into tight fists as she suppressed the overwhelming urge to scream. "This guy..." she thought furiously.

Enzo broke into a laugh, reaching out to pat her head. "Relax, cupcake. I’m just teasing you."

Adeline slapped his hand away, scoffing as she turned and walked towards the window.

At the VIP lounge of a bar, Uncle Evans slumped into a leather seat, exhaling a long, tired sigh.

Seated opposite him, Dacatt lazily stirred a glass of deep red wine, his eyes engrossed in the patterns created by the liquid’s rotations.

"Please tell me you came with good news," Evans said, rubbing his temples with one hand while tapping the armrest impatiently with the other.

Dacatt didn’t answer immediately, remaining fixated on the glass.

Evans’ expression darkened, annoyance written across his face. He let out a loud, deliberate cough, trying to get Dacatt’s attention. When that proved ineffective, he decided to speak up once more. "Hello? Talk to me. I don’t have all day. How did the plan go?"

Dacatt lifted the glass to his lips and drained the wine in one swallow, the alcohol burning his throat as it went down. He set the glass back on the table, hissing at the sensation before finally meeting Evans’ gaze.

"I didn’t get any answers from the girl regarding your suspicions. And surprisingly, somehow, Adeline arrived at the building we were at. I tried killing her, but I...failed."

"Her fiancé was with her. And there was another guy too—looked like a bodyguard. I had a perfect shot, but somehow, her fiancé pulled her out of the way just before the bullet hit."

"So you missed?"

In a fit of frustration, he slammed his hands forcefully onto the table. His lips quivered, and his eyes twitched as he glowered at Evans.

"It wasn’t my fault! That fiancé of hers. Something about him isn’t normal. It’s like he knew I was going to fire before I even pulled the trigger. How the hell do you dodge a speeding bullet?" He glanced down at his shaking hand, his voice lowering as he murmured, "It doesn’t make sense."

Evans let out a weary sigh, his expression laced with disappointment. Shaking his head, he pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a frustrated moan under his breath. "Of course..."

Enzo strolled down the hallway, humming a tune. Just as he passed a door, he heard voices seeping from within. It sounded like Adeline’s voice. Intrigued, he halted in front of the door and, without bothering to knock, pushed it open.

He stepped into the spacious bedroom, finding Adeline seated on the edge of a grand king-sized bed, seemingly involved in conversation. However, upon closer inspection, the room was devoid of another person.
