Evans gave his brother a short, annoyed glance. He didn’t like that he was still doubting the hitman he hired. "Dacatt told you he doesn’t rush his jobs. We have to give it time. He’s one of the best, and he’ll handle it."

Alfonso scoffed, pushing himself up from the couch. "Time?" He pointed a finger in Evans’ direction. "We don’t have time, Evans. Did you see how those two were looking at each other out there? They’re madly in love. What’s stopping them from waking up tomorrow and announcing they’re getting married?"

Evans averted his eyes, his mouth remaining shut, as he chose not to respond.

"Once they’re married, Adeline gets her inheritance. And we both know she’s smart enough to write a will the same day, probably leaving everything to charity or to him. So even if she dies after, we won’t see a damn penny."

Evans’s eyes narrowed, but he still said nothing.

"You’ve wasted so much money already," Alfonso continued. "And you’re still telling me to wait? What if this Dacatt of yours doesn’t deliver? Or worse, what if he gets caught? Then what?"

"You need to call that hitman of yours. Tell him to hurry up and finish the job before it’s too late. Because if we don’t act fast, everything we’ve done so far will be for nothing." Without waiting for a response, he walked out of the room.

Adeline stormed into her bedroom, dragging Enzo in by his wrist. She slammed the door shut, whirling around to face him. "What the hell are you doing?"

Enzo blinked, tilting his head like an innocent child caught in the act. "What do you mean, Adeline?" He asked, feigning confusion.

Adeline threw her hands up, gesturing towards the closed door. "The car, the flowers—all of it! What was that supposed to be?"

The playfulness in his eyes turned into something darker as he stepped forward. Adeline instinctively backed away until her back hit the wall, causing him to also stop. "Like I said before, I’m just making our relationship more... convincing. You know, in front of your family. Isn’t that what we agreed on? Acting like we’re in love when in front of them? Or do you want me to keep reminding you?"

Adeline exhaled, pushing him gently to the side and stepping away from the wall. "Still," she muttered, tucking her hair behind her ear. "That car is ridiculously expensive. You can’t just throw money around like that!"

"Actually, it’s more than just expensive. It’s custom-made. One of a kind."

Adeline’s eyes widened. Slowly, her head snapped back to glare at him. "Custom-made?! Are you serious? That’s even worse!"

Enzo simply shrugged. Money didn’t mean anything to him. If he wanted something, he would get it without thinking twice about the price. "Only the best for my fiancée," he said, winking at Adeline.

Adeline groaned, burying her face in her hands. "Stop that, you fool."

In the grand council chamber, the lights flickered on one by one like a spotlight. The beams focused downward, highlighting the four council members and Damien Laureati, who were seated at a circular table in the center of the room.

At the head of the table was Petrov, the eldest among them. His long white hair stopped at his waist, and his white beard flowed down to his chest, his round glasses perched on his hooked nose.

Beside him sat Argilia, the only female in the council. She looked stunning, far too young for her age, and her skin was flawless.

Nolan, a bald man who in human years would be in his forties, sat next to her with an emotionless face.

Finally, there was Julian, the youngest council member. Even Enzo was older than him. He only became a council member because of his outstanding healing abilities, nothing more.

Julian awkwardly raised his hand, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips. "Uh, for the record, I have nothing to do with this meeting," he said loudly. "This was all them." He gestured toward the other three members, his grin faltering when no one else laughed.

Argilia rolled her eyes in exasperation and slowly turned her head to face him. "Will you please lower your voice, Julian? You’re giving me a headache."

Julian flinched before sinking into his chair, avoiding eye contact. "Sorry, Councillor Argilia," he mumbled, fidgeting with the hem of his sleeve.

Damien leaned forward, bracing his weight on the table as his fingers interlocked. His eyes barely hid his irritation as he scanned the faces of the four council members seated before him. Exhaling, he said, "You all know I am a very busy man. So tell me, what matter is so urgent that you’ve summoned me here?"

Argilia, Julian, and Petrov exchanged glances. It was as though none of them wanted to be the first to speak. The silence dragged on for a few moments until finally, Nolan cleared his throat. "The reason for this meeting should be obvious, Lord Damien. It’s about your son, Enzo."

Damien’s brow furrowed and straightened slightly as Argilia picked up where Nolan left off. "As we all know, the time for you to step down is fast approaching. Enzo is supposed to be here, preparing to take your place."

Petrov nodded in agreement, chiming in. "Your son cannot simply linger in the human world while his responsibilities here are mounting. What do you think the citizens will say if they find out their future ruler is living among mortals when he should be preparing to lead them?"

Damien’s gaze fell to the table as he blinked rapidly, his mind racing for an explanation, but no words came at the moment. After about a minute of thinking, he nodded. "The only reason I allowed him to go to the human world in the first place was to give him a chance to live his best life before taking on the burdens of this throne. We all know how demanding this role is. I’ve sent him countless letters urging him to return, but he refuses. If I had known it would come to this, I would never have let him leave."

Nolan let out a scornful laugh, gesturing at Damien as if he were a fool. "That, Lord Damien, is your problem to deal with. Allowing the future ruler to waltz into the human world was a stupid decision if you ask me."
