The man shot his hands up in surrender, waving them frantically at Enzo. "Alright, alright!" he blurted out, his voice laced with panic. He lifted a trembling finger, pointing toward the hallway he had just come from. "Elijah owns this place—his office is down that hallway. There’s a brown door with a golden star on it. He’s in there right now."

Enzo’s piercing blue eyes remained fixed on him for a prolonged moment, contemplating whether he was being truthful. Then, he pulled back his foot.

"If it turns out you’re lying to us, I’ll come back for you."

The man responded with a frenzied nod, his eyes dropping to the ground as he exhaled a deep sigh of relief.

Enzo and Adeline turned their backs on him, ready to move toward the hallway when the man’s nervous voice stopped them.

"C-Can I go now?"

Enzo’s head whipped back around to face him, a slow, mischievous smile creeping onto his face as he took a step toward him. "Of course not. The moment you step out of that door, you’re going to call security on us."

A frown appeared on the man’s face, a look of befuddlement settling on his features. "What? No, I promise, I won’t!"

Enzo kept walking, closing the distance between them. The man instinctively took a step back, only to crash against the wall behind him. He stopped breathing altogether, overtaken by fear as Enzo’s hand made contact with his shoulder, patting it in an almost friendly manner.

"Don’t be scared. I’m not going to kill you or anything. I’m just going to put you to sleep for a little while. Goodnight."

His hand shot forward and collided with the man’s neck, the strike instantly rendering him unconscious. His eyes rolled back, and his body crumpled onto the ground with a muted thud.

Grabbing the man’s limp arm, Enzo dragged him further down the hall before flinging him into a dark corner. He dusted off his hands and turned back to face Adeline, who stood there stunned, her eyes wide.

Placing a hand on her back, he nudged her forward. "Don’t worry, he’s alive."

At the end of the hallway, they found the brown, wooden door with a gold star on it, just as the man had described. They both exchanged a look, and Enzo gave her a small nod. "Step aside."

As she shifted to the left, he planted his foot against the door and kicked it open. The split second the door burst inward, a gunshot rang out.

The bullet whizzed past where Enzo had been standing just moments ago, barely missing him as he shifted to the right in a flash.

Adeline’s eyes flew wide open in horror. Another shot was fired, piercing through the wooden wall just beside Enzo, sending splinters flying.

Adeline covered her ears with her palms, her eyes squeezing shut for just two seconds. When they opened again, Enzo was gone.

"What the—"

Inside the office, Enzo had already reached the shooter. His hand snapped out, gripping the man’s wrist and twisting it at an unnatural angle.

A cry of pain tore from the shooter’s throat as the gun slipped from his hand, clattering to the floor. Enzo then drove his knee hard into his stomach.

Blood spurted from the man’s mouth as he doubled over, gasping, but Enzo wasn’t done. Grabbing him by the back of the head, he drove his face down onto the wooden desk in front of them.

"Fuck! My nose—"

Enzo yanked his head back up, only to slam it down again. This time, he held him there, pressing his skull against the wood. Blood trickled down the man’s forehead, staining the desk beneath him.

Enzo studied him. The first thing he noticed was his white hair. Then, leaning down and tilting the man’s head slightly, he caught sight of his brown eyes. This was him. The Elijah they were looking for.

Adeline’s head cautiously peeked into the room from the doorway, and her jaw practically dropped when she saw the scene in front of her. Enzo had already taken him down.

"How on earth?" she muttered under her breath. "He was just beside me..."

"You may come in now," Enzo said.

Brushing off her shock, she stepped inside, shutting the door behind her.

Enzo relinquished his hold on Elijah’s hair, shifting his grip to the back of his shirt instead, and proceeded to drag him around the table.

Elijah groaned, his feet scrambling uselessly against the floor as he was hauled forward. When he reached the chair behind the desk, Enzo tossed him into the seat.

He let out a sharp grunt as his back slammed against the chair. His head rolled to the side, a deep breath escaping him as he lifted both hands to his face, cradling his broken nose.

He tried to adjust it, but the moment he applied pressure, a fierce ache shot through his nasal cavity, and he involuntarily let out a tortured cry. His head drooped forward, resting on his lap for a few seconds before he forced himself upright, glaring up at Enzo with bloodshot eyes.

His fingers curled tightly around the chair’s armrests as he gritted out, "The hell is wrong with you, man? My nose is wrecked!"

Enzo disregarded his complaints for the time being and moved back to Adeline’s side, pulling a chair that was placed next to her. He dragged it forward, stopping right in front of the desk, directly across from Elijah.

He tipped his head in the direction of the chair, silently gesturing for her to come and sit. She nodded in response and moved forward, lowering herself onto the seat.

The moment she settled in, Enzo snapped his gaze back to Elijah, who was busy nursing his nose.

He marched right up to him and slammed his palm onto the desk, the sound causing absentminded Elijah to flinch. "You’ll have a lot more broken than just your nose if you don’t stop whining. You were the one who fired at us."

"You could’ve shot her," he said, pointing his finger toward Adeline. "If she hadn’t been behind that wall, your bullet would’ve hit her."

"You’re lucky you didn’t. Because if you had, your guts would be all over this floor right now."

Adeline shifted uncomfortably under Enzo’s words, quickly averting her gaze when he glanced at her.
