Enzo nodded in satisfaction and shifted his hold, setting her down in front of him and giving her head a quick pat.

She scowled, slapping his hand away. "Don’t touch me."

He chuckled and turned toward the bedside table, gesturing at the takeaway bag sitting on top of it. "Are you hungry? I bought something for you on my way back."

Adeline’s stomach felt oddly full despite not eating anything all day. She hadn’t even realized it until now, but she hadn’t felt hungry at all.

"Maybe I drank too much of that tea," she thought as Enzo’s fingers wrapped around her wrist. She shrugged the thought away, allowing him to pull her toward the bed.

When they reached the edge, he grasped both of her arms and applied just enough pressure to guide her down to sit before settling beside her and grabbing the bag.

He pulled out a black plastic container and a pair of chopsticks, tossing the bag aside as he adjusted himself to face her.

Adeline’s pupils flickered towards the closed container, and she raised a brow, pointing at it. "What’s inside?"

Enzo shrugged, popping the lid open. "They’re called Sushi. I heard humans like it, so when I saw a shop on my way back, I figured I’d buy some for you."

"Why are you saying it like that?"

Enzo, now focused on the chopsticks, was attempting to figure out how to hold them properly. Without looking up, he responded. "Like what?"

"What do you mean, humans?" she asked, mocking his tone. "What the fuck are you then? A vampire?"

He paused, his finger stilling against the sticks. If only she knew how right she was. He then let out a short laugh, brushing off his slip-up. "I was just joking."

Adeline eyed him for a moment but eventually let it go. Her gaze darted down to his hands as he fumbled with the chopsticks, clearly struggling to figure out how to use them.

"Give me that." She reached forward, plucking them from his hands.

Enzo watched as she shifted closer her fingers grasping his free hand and adjusting his grip.

"Like this," she instructed, placing one chopstick between his thumb and index finger while maneuvering the bottom one so it was supported by his ring finger. She adjusted his fingers until he held it correctly, before nodding in approval. "There we go."

A grin tugged at Enzo’s lips as he leaned in and kissed her cheek. "Thanks, cupcake."

She huffed, trying to ignore the warmth creeping up her face.

Turning his attention back to the food, he picked up one of the neatly rolled sushi pieces, balancing it between the chopsticks before lifting it toward her mouth. "Open up."

Adeline cocked a brow, glancing between the sushi and his expectant face. "I can feed myself."

Enzo ignored her, teasingly pressing the sushi against her lips before pulling back slightly, repeating the motion just to mess with her. "Come on," he coaxed, a playful gleam in his eyes. "I know you want it."

She rolled her eyes but after a moment of hesitation, parted her lips.

Enzo slowly slid the sushi past them, watching with satisfaction.

Her teeth sank into the soft rice and fish, and the flavors burst in her mouth. She chewed slowly, savoring the taste, before finally swallowing.

"Well?" Enzo asked.

"It’s okay, I guess," she murmured, trying to act nonchalant.

"Just okay?" He lifted another sushi piece with the chopsticks, bringing it to her lips.

As he watched her eat, he couldn’t help but ponder how she had managed to sneak up on him earlier, jumping onto his back without him noticing

His senses were exceptionally sharp, capable of detecting a bullet hurtling his way, yet an ordinary human girl had eluded his awareness. Perhaps it was because she was his mate.

Maybe her being his mate meant she would possess the ability to conceal her presence, rendering herself undetectable to him if she so desired. He hadn’t heard of that before, but that was the only explanation that made sense.

A day later.

Evans stood on one of the mansion’s balconies, his hands resting on the railing as he gazed down at the vast garden below. The evening breeze ruffled his dark hair, his mind elsewhere, tangled in thoughts that kept circling back to the same frustrating problem.

Behind him, Alfonso and Richard sat across from each other at the outdoor table, engaged in a quiet conversation that barely reached his ears. Their words were meaningless background noise, drowned out by the weight of his own thoughts.

Alfonso chuckled at something Richard said before turning toward Evans. "What do you think, brother?"

Evans didn’t respond. He hadn’t even heard the question.

Alfonso exchanged a glance with Richard, who merely shrugged as if to say, ’What else is new?’

Then with a loud snap of his fingers, Alfonso finally pulled his brother back to reality.

Evans blinked, his head snapping toward them as if just realizing they were there. With a sigh, he pushed himself away from the railing and strode over to the table, sinking into the empty chair. "What is it?"

Alfonso leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "That’s what I should be asking you. What is it this time? You’ve been absent-minded ever since Dacatt quit."

At the mention of the unfamiliar name, Richard’s gaze drifted up from the book he had been reading, one brow arched. "Who’s Dacatt?"

Alfonso let out a humorless chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "Right... we never told you about that."

Richard’s expression remained blank, already expecting whatever nonsense was about to come.

"Dacatt was a hitman Evans hired a while back to kill Adeline after the first one failed. He quit a few days ago after being beaten to a pulp by that guy that follows Adeline’s fiancé around," he explained. "We forgot to mention it to you."

Richard’s face deadpanned, not because he was shocked by what he had just learned, but because of the way he had learned it. Forgotten? No, they didn’t forget. They chose not to tell him, just like always.

It wasn’t the first time they had left him out of something important, only letting him in on it after it had already worked or failed.

Not that he particularly cared anymore, but it was just annoying how they always treated him like an outsider whenever they were making plans.
