Enzo’s breaths came out ragged, his jaw tight as pain radiated through his throat from his father’s grip. But even through it, his blue eyes began to darken, shifting into a deeper, stormier shade. His fangs elongated, and his fingers twitched aggressively before they clenched into a fist.

Then he struck. With all the force he could summon, he drove his fist into Damien’s abdomen.

The blow landed hard, forcing a grunt out of the older vampire. He instinctively released Enzo’s neck and got up, staggering back a step.

Enzo dropped forward, coughing for a few moments before pushing himself up from the ground.

He rose to his feet and reached up behind his head, his fingers slipping through the tie holding his hair back, yanking it loose. Strands of jet-black hair spilled down, stopping just at his neck, while a few strands fell over his face, draping across his eyes.

He shoved them back with his hand, sweeping them away as he stood tall, his face lifting to meet Damien. "Surely you didn’t think it was going to be that easy... did you, Father?"

Damien’s glare sharpened as he clutched his throbbing abdomen with one hand, his fingers curling tightly over the spot Enzo’s punch had landed. For a brief moment, his gaze flickered downward, inspecting the point of impact, before snapping his cold, furious eyes back to Enzo.

"Insolent child," he spat before surging forward, seizing Enzo by the collar with both hands. In the same movement, he bent his knees and launched them both into the air, the force of the jump creating a gust that sent loose leaves spiraling upward. They soared high, reaching heights where the trees below looked like nothing but moss against the ground.

Enzo gritted his teeth, his hands gripping his father’s wrist as the wind howled past them. He knew what was coming—his father had used this move a few times on him during training when he was younger.

Damien, reaching his apex, swung his arm downward, throwing Enzo’s body with merciless force.

He plummeted toward the ground, a blur of blue jacket and dark hair spiraling downward.

He hit the asphalt hard, the impact sending a deep, echoing crack through the road beneath him. Dust and debris rose around him in a ghostly cloud.

He closed his eyes and just lay there as pain radiated through his entire body. He coughed harshly, a dry rasp tearing from his throat, and muttered to himself through gritted teeth, "Fuck... Always so damn painful..."

When his eyes cracked open again, they widened instantly in horror. Damien was plummeting straight toward him with his leg extended downward, aimed to crush him beneath his heel.

"Shit!" Enzo exclaimed, rolling to the side just in time. Damien’s boot collided with the ground, shattering the asphalt, spiderweb-like cracks racing outward from the impact.

Enzo scrambled to his feet, stumbling back a few steps, his legs trembling beneath him. He caught himself, standing hunched over and panting heavily.

Across from him, Damien straightened slowly, his face twisted into an expression of cold disdain, mingled with a deep, bitter disappointment. "You’ve gotten too weak," he said with a calm voice, sounding almost pitiful. "But don’t worry... Once we’re back home, I’ll shape you up again."

Enzo barked a broken cough—and with it, a spatter of blood sprayed from his lips. He wiped it off roughly with the back of his arm, then smirked through the blood.

"I’m not going anywhere with you, Father, no matter how much you beat me down."

As the words left his mouth, Damien vanished and reappeared directly in front of him, as if the distance had never existed. His hand clamped around Enzo’s throat, lifting him off the ground.

Enzo’s shoes barely scraped the asphalt, the tips grazing it as Damien studied him. "You are going back with me, and make no mistake, Enzo—I’m not beating you because you’re being stubborn right now. No..."

"I’m beating you because I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. You’ve been nothing but a pain in my side since you came into this world. I’m punishing you for all the headaches, the disgrace, the defiance, and the trouble you’ve caused me."

He pulled Enzo closer, his voice dropping into a bitter snarl. "Did you know that because of you, that pest, Nolan, dared to insult me in front of the other council members?"

Enzo forced a harsh breath through his constricted throat, scoffing despite the agony. "So your ego was bruised. So what?"

Damien’s eyes flashed dangerously, and his grip on Enzo’s throat tightened, forcing Enzo’s eyes shut as he grunted.

Adeline’s wide eyes flicked from Argilia, who was still toying with the restrained Andrei, back to Enzo. When she saw the state he was in, the way Damien’s hand was throttling him, rage boiled up from the pit of her stomach. This was not something she could stand by and watch.

With Argilia’s attention fully on Andrei, she took the chance and pushed off the ground with all the strength she could summon. She sprinted forward, her feet hammering against the asphalt as she poured every ounce of speed she had into the dash.

With one hand, he brushed his heavy black cape aside, allowing it to flutter behind him in the wind. His hand moved to his side, pressing against his throbbing ribs where Adeline’s shoulder had collided.
