Alfonso stared back at Evans, stunned into silence. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He looked like someone who’d seen a ghost.

Evans shook his head disappointedly, his lips curled in disgust. "If Adeline somehow finds out you were behind that crash, you’re on your own, you hear me?" He jabbed a finger toward Alfonso’s chest. "You’ll face the consequences alone because I had nothing to do with it." He let go of him roughly, sending him stumbling back a step.

With that, Evans turned on his heel, storming out of the room and slamming the door shut behind him. Alfonso remained frozen in place, staring blankly at the floor where his shattered wine glass lay. His face was damp with sweat, and his hands trembled. How? How had she survived that crash? He’d seen the state of her car. It was a complete mess, a wreck no one could walk away from. And yet, she was back. Alive.

He began pacing the room, muttering inaudible words under his breath as he ran his fingers through his hair. His footsteps grew frantic, back and forth, back and forth, the shards of the broken wine glass crunching beneath his shoes.

Finally, he stopped, inhaling deeply and letting the breath out in a shaky exhale. He straightened his back, smoothed down his shirt, and pushed down the panic that felt like it was about to consume him. Nodding, he approached the door and stepped out of the room.

The sound of Evans’ shoes echoed across the floor as he entered the mansion’s foyer. His sharp eyes darted around, taking in the gathered faces of the family. Almost everyone was there—except Alfonso, who was still on his way down.

Alessia leaned against the staircase railing next to her two sisters, biting her lip nervously, while Richard stood to the side, arms crossed, observing the scene calmly. Svetlana was already dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief, even though there were no tears.

Evans opened his mouth to ask where Adeline was, but before he could say a word, the front doors opened. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

All heads turned as Adeline stepped in, flanked by Enzo, whose hand rested on her waist.

Evans’s eyes narrowed as he took in Adeline’s appearance. There was not a single scratch or bruise on her skin. She looked annoyingly perfect. Nothing about her reflected someone who had been in a car crash that left the vehicle mangled beyond recognition.

Adeline paused just inside the doorway and let out a small, dramatic gasp. Raising one hand, she delicately hovered her fingertips in front of her lips, her eyes glimmering with feigned innocence. "Dear me, what’s with the look on everyone’s faces? You’d think someone died."

Mrs. Svetlana tossed her handkerchief away, rushing toward Adeline with her arms outstretched. She grabbed her arm, pulling her away from Enzo, and embraced her tightly, burying her face into Adeline’s shoulder.

"Oh, my sweet Adeline!" She cried out, fake tears streaming down her powdered face. Pulling back after a long moment, she wiped at her nonexistent tears with the back of her hand and sniffled loudly. "We saw it on TV—your car crash! We were so worried. We called every hospital in the city, but no one had answers."

Adeline bit back a scoff, suppressing the sarcastic remark bubbling up inside her. "Sure you did," she thought. Her expression turned into a soft, apologetic smile. Gently placing her hands on Svetlana’s shoulders, she squeezed them slightly in a gesture of comfort.

"This is the second time I’ve made you all worry so much. I’m really sorry, Aunt Svetlana, but it was just a small accident. Really, I didn’t even get hurt. You can stop worrying now."

"Small accident?" Evans interjected, stepping forward. "What do you mean by small? Have you even seen your car? It was barely recognizable from what we saw on TV. It’s a miracle anyone could survive something like that, let alone come out without a scratch."

Enzo stepped in, pulling her back into his arms. His lips brushed against her temple in a brief kiss, causing her to tense. She fought the urge to push him away, her nails digging into her palms as she controlled herself.

"As long as I’m with her, nothing can hurt her. No matter how bad it is. She’s safe with me."

Evans watched Enzo with pure hatred, not even trying to hide it. "This bastard is starting to become an obstacle," he thought. The arrogant confidence in Enzo’s words and the casual way he touched Adeline made Evans’s blood boil.

Suddenly, the sound of soft footsteps drew their attention. Alfonso emerged from the hallway, and the moment his eyes landed on Adeline, he froze in place. His breath hitched, his shoulders stiffening as if someone had poured ice water on him.

During the elevator ride down, he had prayed it was all some horrible misunderstanding. That Alessia had made a mistake and that Adeline and Enzo and Adeline weren’t actually back. Or that someone else entirely had entered the mansion. But now, standing before him, they were very much alive.

Adeline’s eyes flicked past Evans’s shoulder, catching sight of Alfonso. She let out a soft chuckle and raised a hand, waving at him. "Uncle Alfonso, are you alright? You seem... lost."

Alfonso jolted at her words, snapping back to reality. He forced out a nervous laugh, his voice shaky as he quickly shook his head. "Ah—no, no, I’m fine. I’m just so relieved, that’s all. I—well, we were all so worried about you, Adeline. Thank goodness you’re alright."

He approached her and reached out his hands, gently taking one of Adeline’s hands and cupping it with his own. "Adeline, my dear. What even happened? How did you crash?"

Adeline’s gaze flicked down to his hand on hers, and for a moment, her face twisted into a look of pure disdain. But just as quickly, she replaced it with a warm smile.

"Oh, it was entirely my fault, uncle. I haven’t driven the car in so long, and I neglected to get it checked. The brakes gave out." She sighed as though it were nothing more than a minor inconvenience. "But none of that matters now. I’m perfectly fine, and that’s all that matters, right?"
