"Why has Enzo never replied to any of my letters about his return?" Damien asked.

Andrei didn’t hesitate for even a second and shook his head. "I do not know why, my liege."

Damien hummed, nodding slowly, though it was clear he wasn’t satisfied with that answer. His gaze flickered to Vincent, who stood stiffly behind Andrei, and the moment their eyes met, his head gaze immediately dropped to the floor.

Andrei noticed the exchange, but his own attention remained fixed on Damien.

"I’ve heard of a girl lingering in Enzo’s life," Damien continued. "It’s been quite some time since Vincent here told me about her." He cast another glance at Vincent, who was silently wishing for the ground to open and swallow him.

"I know my son well. He doesn’t keep people around for long—so this one must be special. So tell me, Andrei—who is she? And more importantly, what is she to him?"

Vincent barely breathed as his heart pounded aggressively in his chest. His hands clenched behind his back, clutching the stack of papers tightly as fear coiled around his spine.

Damien must have been having doubts about the reports he had been giving him about Enzo and Adeline—hence why Andrei was summoned here. He was the one person who would truly know.

If Andrei told him the truth, Vincent would be in trouble. Damien would easily figure out he had been lying this whole time because there was no way he could have been watching Enzo for all these months and failed to notice a relationship forming.

Tears pricked at the edges of Vincent’s eyes, regret filling his chest like a lead weight. He should have told the truth from the start and pulled himself out of this mess. But no—his soft heart had gotten the better of him like it always does. Now, it was too late.

If Damien found out that Adeline and Enzo were engaged, he would completely lose it. He had only agreed to give Enzo three months to return because he had no idea they were even in a relationship.

Them being in one was already enough proof that Enzo has no plans of ever coming back, and he can’t allow that. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Vincent swallowed hard. If anything happened to her, he would feel nothing but guilt for the rest of eternity. He cursed himself for showing Damien those stupid photos in the first place. What had he been thinking? Trying to impress him? Seeking his approval?

"Forgive me, my liege. But I do not know anything about that," Andrei said calmly, his expression as blank as a paper.

Damien’s fangs elongated, his pupils dilating into slits. In a flash, he was on his feet, his hands slamming down onto the table with enough force to shake it.

"Do not give me that nonsense, Andrei!" he roared. "You have been with my son this whole time over there. It is impossible that you do not know. Speak—this instant!"

Andrei slowly rose from his chair, bowing deeply. "I am sorry, my liege, but when it comes to Enzo’s life, matters such as this do not concern me. I know nothing about who or what that girl might be to him."

Then, in the blink of an eye, Damien was in front of him. His hand shot out, gripping Andrei’s throat in an iron grasp.

Vincent flinched but dared not move.

Andrei’s jaw clenched, his body tensing at the pressure against his windpipe. But he didn’t struggle and simply stood there, bowing his head.

Damien leaned in, his thumb pressing under Andrei’s chin, forcing his head up until their eyes met. "I raised you, Andrei," he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I am the reason you are alive and well today. And I can just as easily take your life."

His sharp nails pressed faintly against Andrei’s skin, so close to piercing through it. "Do not lie to me."

Andrei stared right into Damien’s dark eyes, without a hint of fear in him. The king’s grip around his throat was so firm that one would think he would actually snap his neck at any moment, but it didn’t faze him. Death was the last thing he was afraid of.

He lifted his hand and wrapped it around Damien’s wrist, his touch gentle. "You did raise me, my liege. And for that, I am forever grateful."

"But if you wish to take my life, then so be it." His fingers pressed against Damien’s wrist, but not in defiance. "Strangle me right here if you want to, but my answer remains the same."

Silence stretched between them as Damien’s eyes searched his face, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked as if he might shatter his own teeth.

His grip did not tighten—but it did not loosen either.

Then, abruptly, he yanked his hand away forcefully and turned his back to Andrei, his fists clenching at his sides. "Get out of my sight. Both of you."

Once again, he was unable to bring himself to actually hurt any of the boys. If this were any other vampire, they would be dead—or at least have a few of their bones shattered—the moment they gave him the answer he didn’t like.

Vincent wasted no time bowing, and Andrei followed suit. They both turned and exited the office.

The second the door closed behind them, Vincent let out a shaky breath and clutched his chest, his entire body trembling. The fear he had been suppressing finally spilled over, and tears slid down his cheeks.

Andrei arched a brow at him, though he wasn’t really puzzled by his reaction. "Why do you look so scared?"

Vincent didn’t answer.

Andrei sighed, placing a hand on the younger vampire’s back and giving him a firm pat before nudging him forward. "Come on. Let’s get away from here."

Damien’s ears were so sharp that he could hear even their quietest whispers if he wanted to.

As they walked down the hall, Vincent wiped at his tears with his sleeve, sniffling.

Andrei exhaled a heavy breath, watching him with something close to amusement. He slid his arm over to his shoulder, pulling him into his side. "You’re never going to stop being such a crybaby, are you? What’s wrong now?"
