Across the road, perched on the rooftop of a tall building—the very one Enzo had stopped to look at earlier—Dacatt lay on his stomach, his sniper rifle set positioned in front of him. He wore a balaclava, only his eyes and mouth visible beneath the dark fabric.

He peered through the sniper scope. "Where the hell is she?" He thought as he scanned the spot he had just shot at, confused.

The second he pulled the trigger, Adeline had disappeared. He couldn’t tell if he had hit her or not.

Through the scope, he watched as Enzo straightened from his crouched position, pulling Adeline up with him. He saw the way Enzo checked her over, making sure she was unharmed, before hugging her tightly to his chest.

Dacatt cursed under his breath when he realized that Enzo had once again saved her from his bullet. He shifted his aim, repositioning the sniper scope directly at Adeline’s head.

His finger curled around the trigger as he inhaled deeply, calming himself, and then he blinked. When his eyes flickered open again, his heart skipped a beat.

Enzo was staring at him. Not at the building, not in the general direction, but right at the very spot where he was lying, almost as if he could see him.

Dacatt’s finger trembled against the trigger as the same suffocating fear from before—the fear he had felt when he heard Enzo’s voice in that convenience store in Vegas—wrapped around him like chains, paralyzing him.

"There was no way he can see," he told himself.

He was too far and completely camouflaged in darkness, that it was impossible for anyone that wasn’t on the same roof to see him. And yet, Enzo’s blank expression and his cold, predatory stare, pierced through the distance as if Dacatt was standing right in front of him.

Dacatt swallowed hard, deciding to ignore him. He forced himself to steady his breathing and block out the fear, shifting his focus back on Adeline.

Just as he was about to pull the trigger, a sudden force struck his ribs hard, sending him flying across the rooftop. His sniper rifle was ripped from his grasp as he crashed into a metal rooftop unit with enough force to make him see stars.

His balaclava had twisted slightly, blocking part of his vision, and he yanked it back into place. His gaze darted toward the direction the kick had come from, his breaths coming out in uneven puffs.

Standing right there was Andrei, calm and composed, as if he hadn’t just sent him flying across the rooftop.

Dacatt groaned as he stood up, one hand pressing against his ribs where the impact had landed.

Despite the pain, he let out a bitter chuckle, wiping the blood trickling from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand.

"So, you’re the bodyguard, huh?" He scoffed, tilting his head as he examined Andrei. "You’re sharp. How the hell did you even get up here so fast?"

Andrei didn’t answer his question, his dark eyes locked onto Dacatt like a predator watching its prey. "You should surrender now," he spoke. "I’ll show mercy if you do."

Dacatt blinked before throwing his head back in laughter, slapping a hand against his face as if he had just heard the most ridiculous thing in the world.

"Surrender?" He asked. "Not a chance."

He reached behind him, pulling out a silenced pistol from the holster strapped to his back and firing two shots directly at Andrei’s chest.

But all of a sudden Andrei was gone.

Dacatt’s smirk faltered and his eyes widened in confusion, his mind scrambling to process what had just happened. A second ago, the man had been standing right in front of him—there was no way he could’ve moved that fast.

His pulse quickened, a cold sense of unease creeping up his spine as he frantically snapped his head left and right, scanning every inch of the rooftop.

But no matter where he looked, Andrei was nowhere to be seen. The only sound was the faint rustling of the wind against the rooftop.

Then, a shadow shifted behind him, and as soon as he whirled around to see what it was, a brutal punch connected with his face.

Pain exploded across his cheek as his head snapped to the side, his lip splitting under the impact.

Blood dripped down from the fresh cut on his cheek, seeping into the fabric of his balaclava. He stumbled back, nearly losing his balance as his hand flew up to press against his face, gripping the mask to keep it from slipping off.

Slow footsteps echoed across the rooftop as Andrei advanced on him. "You better make sure that doesn’t come off," he murmured coldly. "Because if I see your face... you’re done for."

Dacatt felt himself instinctively stepping back, inching closer and closer to the ledge behind him. His fingers tightened around the grip of his pistol, and he raised it again, rapidly pulling the trigger.

Bullet after bullet fired in Andrei’s direction, but his eyes widened in horror as he watched Andrei dodge them with unnatural speed, his body blurring with each movement as he darted in a zigzag pattern.

At some point, he squeezed the bullet, but all he heard was a click, indicating that he was out of bullets. He pulled the trigger again. Nothing.

For just a second, he glanced down at the empty pistol and angrily tossed it aside, but the moment he looked back up, Andrei was gone again.

He decided to follow Andrei’s pattern from earlier and braced himself. Just as he expected, Andrei reappeared, striking with another punch, but Dacatt raised his forearms up just in time, shielding his face.

The impact sent a jolt of pain up his arm, but at least he had blocked it. It would’ve been much worse if the punch had hit his face again.

Gritting his teeth through the pain, he snapped his knee upward with all his strength, driving it into Andrei’s stomach.

Andrei staggered back, a hand pressing against the area, and in that moment, Dacatt took his chance. He lunged forward, slamming his forehead against the vampire’s.

The impact rang in his skull, and his own vision blurred for a moment, but it was enough to force Andrei back a few more steps.
