"You heard me. I’m done," Dacatt repeated, stepping fully out of the booth and taking a step away from them. "I’ll calculate all the money you’ve paid me so far and send back whatever’s extra, but I’m out."

He didn’t wait for a response. He just turned and sluggishly walked off.

Evans stood there, his fingers twitching at his sides as he watched Dacatt disappear into the crowd of the bar. For a long moment, he didn’t move, lost for words.

Then, suddenly, his hand slammed against the table, his palm hitting the surface repeatedly in barely contained rage. When he was done, he slowly sank back down onto the seat.

Alfonso shook his head and clicked his tongue in disapproval. "Tsk, tsk, tsk. I don’t know whether I should laugh or be angry, honestly."

"I did warn you about this guy. I told you he would end up being another waste of time, didn’t I? But no, Evans knows best. And now look at you. You just wasted a shit ton of money on yet another useless hitman."

Evans didn’t utter a word and just stared at the table. As much as he hated to admit it, Alfonso was right. His brother did warn him about Dacatt, right from the very day they met him, but he had insisted he knew what he was doing

He had been so convinced that Dacatt was the best option due to all the reviews he got from his other ’clients.’ ’Dacatt never quits until he gets the job done.’ ’Dacatt always finishes off his targets swiftly,’ this and that.

And now? He was back to square one, and his mind was boiling at the thought.

Alfonso, watching him, let out a weary sigh. As much as he wanted to rub it in more, the sight of his brother looking dejected and defeated, and somewhat pitiful, tugged at his heartstrings, and he couldn’t help but feel a slight pang of guilt.

He reached out, patting Evans’s shoulder, his tone shifting into a comforting one. "Come on, brother. Let’s just go home. It’s late." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Evans nodded once, pushing himself up, and together, they left the bar, heading back to the estate in silence.

By the time they returned to the estate and drove towards the garage, Evans was still in a sour mood. He stared out the window, barely paying attention to anything around him—until his eyes landed on Adeline and Enzo in the distance.

The two had just returned from wherever the hell they had gone, walking toward the mansion together. Adeline swayed slightly as she laughed with her fiancé, clearly a little drunk. Her golden hair shimmered under the estate lights as she moved in sync with Enzo, who had one arm draped around her waist.

The sight of them so happy made Evans’ mood plummet even further.

When they finally parked and headed inside, Evans prayed that by the time they reached the foyer, Adeline and Enzo would already be on the second floor, out of sight and heading to their room. He really didn’t want to see them right now.

But to his annoyance, as soon as he and Alfonso stepped into the foyer, the first thing they saw was the two of them.

Adeline stood on her tiptoes, her arms looped around Enzo’s neck while his hands rested on her waist. Their lips were locked together, moving in an unhurried, lingering kiss.

Both Evans and Alfonso grimaced at the sight, their steps slowing.

"What the hell is the meaning of this?" Evans’s voice rang sharply through the foyer.

Enzo’s head lifted, his blue eyes flicking toward them, while Adeline slowly turned to face them, a dazed, flushed smile spreading across her lips.

"Oh—Hello, Uncle," she greeted. "I didn’t realize anyone was still awake at this time. Where did you two go? Surely the company is closed by now."

Evans’ scowl deepened. "That’s none of your business." He shifted his gaze back to Enzo who looked unbothered. "And whatever the hell you two are doing, take it to the damn bedroom. Not here."

Turning to Alfonso, he said, "Let’s go."

Enzo entered the room, carrying Adeline—whose legs had given up on her in the elevator —in his arms as he walked over to the bed. They were supposed to return back right after seeing the movie, but one thing led to another and they ended up going to get drinks.

He gently sat her down in a seated position before kneeling in front of her, his fingers undoing the straps of her heels and slipping them off her feet.

"There we go," he murmured.

Adeline slumped into the bed, emitting a sound of satisfaction as she clutched the cover, drawing it over herself until her form was completely concealed beneath the fluffy bedding

"Goodnight, my dear..."

Enzo’s eyes widened, and a hint of pink dusted his cheeks, the impact of her unexpected words leaving him momentarily flustered. "My dear?" He thought. "That’s new."

"Goodnight to you too then, my little bumblebee," he whispered, patting her side through the blanket before standing up. He made his way toward the balcony, pushing open the glass doors and stepping outside.

The gentle night breeze wrapped around him as he leaned against the railings, his gaze lifting towards the full moon that bathed the estate in silver light. It looked the same, beautiful, just like it was in his world.

It was a peaceful moment until his phone buzzed in his pocket.

Drawing the phone out, the name ’Adrian Langston’ appeared on the caller ID as he looked at the screen. Intrigued, he swiped his finger across the screen to accept the call. "Hello?"

"Enzo, my friend," Adrian’s voice came through the line, hurried and direct. "Good news. I finally got access to my father’s phone and saw the receipts you guys were looking for."

"But sadly, I’m leaving Vegas early tomorrow morning, so I won’t be able to hand them to you myself, but you can pick them up at my company. I already gave them to the CEO for safekeeping. I’ll text you the address."

"Understood," Enzo said. "Thank you, Adrian. You don’t know how much this means to us."

"No problem, my friend. I am happy to help."

The call ended, and less than a minute later, a message notification appeared on his screen with the details Adrian promised.

He smiled, glancing back at the bed Adeline lay on before walking back into the room. He tossed his phone onto the bedside table, and despite not feeling particularly sleepy, he slipped under the covers, drawing her closer with a gentle tug and enveloping her in his embrace.
