"So I checked your reports, and it seems that you are not eligible for Class 11."

The new principal said this after explaining why I was being demoted. She didn’t even lift her head, her fingers just tapping against the top of my student file like she was reading a grocery list.

I had only attended Year 10 properly during the first term, but I never attended much of the second term. Well, that was because I was kidnapped by a certain person and admitted to the hospital for months.

As for the third term, I barely attended at all. My score sheet for the previous class was poor because I didn’t do the tests or exams, and I didn’t have good scores to begin with, so it was impossible for me to be promoted. The report card was just a solid row of red ink and zeros that made my stomach sink every time I pictured it.

Unlike Princess, whose score credits had been perfect since day one. She had also missed classes and exams, but she was still promoted because of her score credits and because she happened to be one of the top five students. Meanwhile, I was near the bottom.

Lucky me.

Even Malo, who never took classes seriously, the guy who valued money more than anything, was in the top 20. Sasha and Haley were both in the top 10.

I still can’t believe this is how I am being presented to this woman who I feel hates my guts.

I adjusted myself, trying to sit properly and get comfortable so I could prepare myself to speak. My sneakers scraped against the floor as I sat up straight, clearing my throat to find my voice.

"Am I not supposed to take some exams or something to qualify? Being demoted doesn’t seem right. There are valid reasons why I couldn’t attend classes or write the exams," I stated, hoping for an alternative because I did not wish to be demoted. Fuck no. The thought of sitting in a classroom full of kids a year younger than me made my skin crawl with pure embarrassment.

"That’s the reason I called you. You are going to take the exams, and I have already been discussing it with the teachers. There are nine subjects in which you have low scores." She said. She finally leaned back in her high-back chair, folding her hands neatly over her lap.

"So I have to take 9 subjects for me to be in Class 11?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave as the massive weight of the number hit me.

"Yes. 18 exams, precisely. Exams are taken twice a term."

"Come on, can’t you just combine the questions and let me take them once?" I said. I leaned over the desk, throwing my hands out in an desperate plea.

"I’m sure if I were to do that, you wouldn’t pass with even one point." She replied smoothly, a cold, tiny smile touching the edge of her lips.

"Are you trying to tell me the exams are going to be difficult?"

"If you have common knowledge, you will be able to pass."

Was this bitch insulting me right now? The skin around my ears went instantly hot, my blood bubbling at the subtle dig at my intelligence.

She spoke so calmly, but I felt like she was trying to break me into pieces. Every word that came out of her mouth was calculated to make me feel small and completely powerless.

Because I am right now!

"Well, I need time to study if I have to take the exams," I protested.

She opened her drawer and handed me a file. The plastic folder slid across the smooth mahogany wood, landing right in front of my knuckles.

"That’s why I created a study schedule. With that, you will be able to study and take your exams, which are in two weeks time."

Really? Two weeks to prepare myself for an exam?

I usually needed weeks just to cram information into my fucking head before I could get a passing grade.

I studied the file she had given me. I flipped the first page open, my eyes scanning the dense blocks of black ink.

My free periods had been turned into study periods. I was only allowed a ten-minute lunch break, and the worst part was the after-school study sessions from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

That’s 5 hours.

I had kids to take care of and work I needed to attend to because I was also getting schooled on being a fucking Moon Wolf. My schedule was already packed to the absolute brim with dirty diapers, feeding schedules, and ancient training, leaving zero room for extra academic torture.

"Why the fuck do I have to study after school?" I muttered, my eyes still on the file. The print seemed to blur together as my anger grew.

"Ms. Grande, that is your last warning. You do not use foul language on my school premises. I checked your records and data. For you to be able to pass these exams, those are the hours of study you need." She snapped, her voice sharpening into a hard blade that cut through the room.

"Even my weekends?" I muttered as I saw Saturday and Sunday included. My thumb pressed hard against the paper, highlighting the bold letters for the weekend slots.

It’s just a high school promotion exam, not some fucking college admission exam.

Even college exams don’t require this kind of studying. They were treating me like I was trying to become a rocket scientist instead of just trying to pass regular tenth grade biology.

I quietly dropped the file onto the table. It landed with a dull slap against the wood.

"I can’t do this," I said simply and directly. I looked her right in the eyes, refusing to back down from her icy stare.

"You need to. And if you’re thinking this is a choice you get to make, it’s not. You are in my school, and you have to follow my rules. If you don’t want to take the exams, then you will be removed. And how do you think that will look for you and your family’s future?"

Why was she bringing my family into this? The mention of my name and my line made my jaw lock instantly, a low heat flaring up in my chest.

"It’s just a fucking exam, not some fucking life-or-death situation."

The moment those words left my mouth, she started writing something on a slip of paper. Her pen scratched aggressively against the small pad, the sharp sound filling the tense silence between us.

"Detention for the whole week," she said, handing me the ticket. She ripped the paper off the pad with a crisp snap, holding it out between her two fingers.

I couldn’t believe this shit. I stared at the slip, my vision going slightly blurry with pure fury.

Great first day and I am having detention.

"You know, I can still take the exams without your strict study schedule. I have a life after school, and I’m not trading it for my grades. So either you demote me or you let me take the exams on my own study terms." I argued, my voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through my veins.

"Like I said, you have no say in this. Instead of you giving me options, let me give you mine. Here at Oakland High School, when you take a class, there are no repeats. And I am not going to let you write those exams if you don’t follow my rules. It’s either you shape up or ship out. No one is repeating my class."

She paused, adjusting her glasses.

"You wouldn’t be the first Omega to be expelled."
