We were both naked, our skin slick and warm against each other in the cramped space of the car. I was sitting on her lap, my legs draped over hers and my arms wrapped around her neck. I felt like a child resting my head on her shoulder, just breathing in the scent of her skin.

We had completely lost count of how many times we both came on each other. All that sliding and moving around had worked up a genuine appetite, and this time, it wasn’t just a craving for her.

Princess ended up placing an order for some real food.

We sat there in the quiet of the early morning, sharing a feast of pizza and fried chicken. I was busy tearing into a piece of chicken while I held up a slice of pizza for her to bite into, washing it all down with my bubble tea. It was peaceful, just the two of us hidden away from the world.

We spent a lot of time in her car, talking and drifting in and out of sleep, until 5 a.m. rolled around. I knew I couldn’t push it any longer, so I finally climbed out and sneaked toward the house.

The whole living room was pitch black when I stepped inside. I moved on my tiptoes, holding my breath and praying the floorboards wouldn’t creak. Just when I thought I had actually made it to the safety of my room, the light clicked on, blinding me.

Well, today my luck ran out. My brother caught me.

Fucking hell. He did not go to work.

"Where were you?" he asked. His voice was low and heavy. He was leaning against the armrest of the couch, his hands planted on his waist like some mom who just caught her child sneaking back from a party.

"Hey, Paye, you’re home..." I said. I tried to keep my voice casual, acting like I hadn’t just been caught red handed.

"Where were you, Faye!" he repeated, his voice rising this time.

"You know... receiving the cool fresh air in the woods," I said, waving a hand vaguely toward the window. "Lately the breeze has been really calming, you know? It helps me sleep." I tried to think of something better, something more believable, but that was all my tired brain could come up with.

"Really? All night?" He didn’t look like he was buying a single word of it.

"Yes, all night. We’re wolves after all, the wild is our home..." I shrugged, trying to lean into the whole nature thing.

"First, your eyes are doing that thing when you lie. Second, you reek of that Alpha girl."

Fuck my stupid eyes. Do I really smell of Princess that much? I tried sniffing my own shoulder to confirm, and yeah, he wasn’t lying. Her scent was all over me, thick and unmistakable.

"Well, aren’t you supposed to be at work?" I asked, desperately hoping to flip the script and change the topic.

"I took a day off to rest, and to my surprise it turns out you haven’t been sleeping in at all. Since when has this been going on?" He was staring right at me, waiting. He really wanted to talk about it. There was no silent treatment this time; he was digging in his heels.

"You know I’m carrying her pups. I have to be with her, and we’ve decided we want to be with each other. She is my mate," I said, my voice getting firmer.

"Mate?" He paused, his expression shifting into something darker. "Did you let her mark you?"

Before I could answer, Eriko’s room door creaked open. We both stopped talking and watched as he stepped out into the room. The second he saw the two of us standing there in the middle of a showdown, he turned right back around, stepped into his room, and shut the door tight.

Just when I thought the interruption might end the conversation, it didn’t. Paye wasn’t letting me off the hook.

"How many times have I warned you to stay away from Alphas? First, you got yourself pregnant by an Alpha, then you got yourself marked by one... making that Alpha come here every single day for what...?"

I don’t know what came over me, but the frustration of the last few months just boiled over. I spoke my mind. I always do when I’m backed into a corner.

"Maybe if you had let me stay in Redwood, I wouldn’t be in this position right now," I snapped.

"Maybe if you would just stop being so fucking overprotective. It’s not my fault that I’m pregnant. Well, it’s the fucking city you brought me to. My life was better back in Redwood. I had my friends there, my perfect school that wasn’t shitty like this one. My life was better, but because of you and your fucking personal problems, we have to move from one fucking place to another just because of your trust issues."

I could see him flinch, but I couldn’t stop the words from rushing out.

"I don’t even know what Guru did so bad that you had to repay his kindness by leaving him all alone. At least the girl who got me pregnant is trying to be responsible, but your fucking hatred for Alphas is making it unbearable."

I don’t even know how much I actually said, but the moment I saw his eyes start to get watery, I knew I had gone way too far. The anger in my chest vanished, replaced by a cold knot of guilt.

I stopped talking immediately. This was one of the big reasons my brother usually gives me the silent treatment. It’s because I always lose it and say things I can’t take back.

"Your problems have always been my personal problems," he said, his voice trembling. "From the moment mother gave birth to you, you, Faye, have always been the problem. My problem has always been you."

The moment he finished saying those words, he turned and stormed into his room, slamming the door behind him.

I stood there in the silent living room, the harsh light still stinging my eyes.

I could hear him crying through the wall. Even though he was trying his hardest not to make a single sound, his silent cry was loud enough for me to hear it perfectly. It felt like a punch to the gut.
