“All of you go down first, we have some matters to discuss.” Bennett looked at the few students and Maid Fia behind him, smiling as he waved them away.

Lilia was not so gentle with her students, releasing her aura all at once. The cold breath made some of the weaker apprentices turn somewhat pale, their brows hinting at the hardships of bitter frost.

And these students also respectfully backed away with understanding.

“Tutor Lucien, then I’ll go down too,” Carly said, respectfully bowing to Lucien with keen awareness.

“Yes, familiarize yourself more with the bow and arrows, especially the part about practicing rapid spell casting,” Lucien whispered to Carly, then followed Bennett and Lilia to the top-level lounge to begin discussing the division of tasks at the start of the mission.

After the three leading tutors had left the deck, the students and servants became somewhat livelier, either returning to their cabins for rest or overlooking the magnificent scenery outside the alchemy airship.

Carly, at this moment, quietly walked to the side of the ship, gently caressing the airship that was so familiar to her.

Originally, she had arrived at Greybone Academy aboard another airship, but back then, she did not receive the treatment she had now. She was piled in the storage hold of the airship’s lower deck like cargo, together with a large number of new blood overseen by a leader.

Now, accompanying tutor Lucien on board the airship once again, her status and treatment had changed.

This inevitably led to a complexity of emotions in Carly’s heart, prompting her to think of many things.

“Hello, you are student of Lord Lucien, right? We are students of tutor Lilia, I’m Ruth, and this is Gagarin. This here is Philer, student of Lord Bennett. Seeing you alone here, would you like to join us for a drink inside?”

As Carly was immersed in her thoughts, three Wizard Apprentices came over together, directly approaching her. One of the female apprentices extended the invitation to Carly.

Carly was momentarily taken aback because the three Wizard Apprentices inviting her were all Second-level Wizard Apprentices, and their auras were incredibly formidable, clearly elites who had spent considerable time at this rank, but she didn’t know why these three had approached her—what could they want?

Considering this, Carly paused for a moment and then accepted the invitation from the three apprentices, all four walking together into the airship’s bar.

“Everyone inside, get out!” As soon as they entered the cabin, Gagarin and Philer released their auras, startling and chasing out two apprentices who had been resting there.

Then, Gagarin closed the door and immediately set up a soundproof wizard formation. Only after that did he survey the companions he had “chosen,” revealing what he believed was a fairly benign smile.

“You all should know, the mission undertaken by the tutors and several lords is one with an extremely high mortality rate. And as their students, we are actually allowed, according to the rules, not to participate in this mission. It’s not us who are under compulsive orders, after all, but them.”

“To insist on our presence, including those weak First-level Wizard Apprentices, is to use us as cannon fodder and pathfinders.”

Gagarin clearly felt resentful as he said this.

After all, he was not far from reaching the realm of a Third-level Wizard Apprentice. With more accumulation of experience, he could leave Lilia and form his own faction, and perhaps even take a Formal Wizard as his mentor, gaining better resources and support.

But this time, limited by the contract he had previously signed with Lilia, he was obliged to accept the mission and participate in the adventure. If all went well, the rewards would be Lilia’s, and he would only get the leftovers. If it went awry, he feared he would be the first to die.

Upon hearing his words, the other two, aside from Carly, nodded their heads in agreement. They were among the standout students and naturally valued their lives even more!

However, Carly’s gaze flickered slightly, for she had argued forcefully with Mentor Lucien to be allowed aboard the airship.

Otherwise, Carly felt that Mentor Lucien would not have agreed to have her join him on the mission.

But observing the righteous indignation of the other three Wizard Apprentices, Carly chose not to voice her thoughts rashly. Instead, she remained silent, listening intently to their conversation, eager to ascertain whether their so-called plans would impact Mentor Lucien.

What Gagarin and the others did not realize was that in their team, there lurked someone like Carly—an anomaly or, one might say, a natural “traitor.” After all, they did not believe in the existence of mentors like Lucien, who genuinely had the students’ interests at heart and did not plan to gain anything off them.

Thus, in their view, the members of their small group should naturally form an alliance of mutual benefit.

“All we’re trying to do is to protect ourselves!” At this point, Gagarin reached the peak of his fervor, gesticulating violently as if to vent the frustrations long suppressed under Lilia’s thumb.

“We’re fighting for our own paths as wizards, not to advance a mentor’s career!…”

Believing he had successfully roused everyone’s emotions, Gagarin then revealed his objective for wanting the others to cooperate with him this time: to gather intelligence, meaning each person would learn about a portion of their mentor’s plans and arrangements.

This was why they had invited Carly, a mere First-level Wizard Apprentice, into their “self-preservation alliance,” since she was the only student under Lucien.

Carly now grew increasingly uneasy, feeling like a white crow among black ones. Although they momentarily treated her as one of their own, it seemed she wouldn’t be able to maintain the façade much longer.

Moreover, the situation became even more dire as the gazes of the other three now turned towards Carly, seemingly laced with encouragement.

After a pause, Carly, facing her seemingly revolutionary companions, swallowed hard.

“Well… I feel that Mentor Lucien has been quite good to me,” Carly muttered hesitantly, unable to betray her conscience.

Silence fell, and Carly’s statement brought a certain tension to what had been a harmonious setting.

The other three apprentices exchanged glances but seemed unsure of how to proceed.

After all, Lucien was still on the airship! If they laid a hand on Carly, perhaps Lucien would squash them on the spot!

“But I’m willing to cooperate with you,” Carly said, her gaze flickering slightly. She felt that as a student of Mentor Lucien, she needed to start considering from his perspective.

By collaborating with these tricksters, perhaps she could learn some information that might be useful to Mentor Lucien. She just lacked experience in this area and would need to consult with Mentor Lucien afterward.
