YIREN’S POV

The silence between us is so thick you could cut it with a knife. I stare out the window, refusing to break it. After all, who does he think he is, storming into my dinner like that? Throwing a fit over me having dinner with another man—when he himself was off doing God knows what with his mystery woman back home? And the audacity to lie he had a dinner planned for me. Where? I didn’t see any dinner setup, no word from him or Rui. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

My ass.

And the worst part? He had the audacity to look so damn handsome in the navy suit that it hurts. Dressed to perfection in a way that practically has my heart skip a beat whenever I look at him.

But then, the glaringly obvious red nail marks on his neck narrate a different story. Of course, he came to the dinner after he was done for the night with his mystery woman. I noticed he didn’t even eat anything; just kept piling food onto my plate, all the while watching me with those intense, knowing eyes. And now he sits here, so calm, like he’s completely innocent and I’m the one overreacting.

Is she that beautiful that he went back on his words for her?

I glance over at him, and our eyes meet. He’s watching me like he’s waiting for me to say something. Fine. I’m not holding back.

"Done with your night with your sexy woman?" I ask, my voice cool but laced with all the accusation I’m feeling. "Didn’t get enough fun back home that you came looking for me?"

"What are you saying?"

"Don’t pretend. I know everything."

"Good. Because I know nothing. Please enlighten me."

I yank his collar, "These marks are screaming the story of your passionate night.... And I hear the excitement in your voice singing "sway" while getting ready."

He gives it a once over through the front mirror, and chuckles. These are her handiwork, and I have many more on my body. She scratches like a demon and doesn’t even notice.

"Is that jealousy I smell?"

"No. I don’t care."

"Good. Because it was just a bad night which I ended even really quick."

Ha! Awesome. No woman can put up with your demands as I do.

"Do you know I hired best chef in the city to prepare a fancy dinner. And got the terrace fully decorated with the most expensive flowers."

Oh, so it was dinner on the terrace! I ring my dress in anger, "A girl who needs fancy dinner and expensive decoration- awesome choice."

Dumb choice.

You like a simple meal over anything fancy. So why change yourself to impress someone? And you always prefer simple fairy lights for decoration.

"Are you mad, Yiren?"

"No." and then a question came out of nowhere like it was sitting at the tip of my tongue, "Did you kiss her?"

If the answer is yes, I’m stabbing him with the Swiss knife I carry in my purse.

"Not yet. But I’m hopeful."

My head snaps, "What do you mean?"

"The night is still young. I’m hoping for the kiss and the desert both."

Ok I’m officially fuming. The anger is pulsing through. No it’s not anger but I’m hurt. Someone’s squeezing my lungs.... I can’t breathe.

I lower the window, and stick my face out before this suffocation kills me.

JUN’S POV

So that’s the reason behind her stormy silence and the death glares. She actually thought I was getting ready for a date night... with someone else? I almost laugh out loud at the absurdity. Why would she assume that mystery woman couldn’t be her?

As soon as the car pulls up to the foyer, she jumps out, not even waiting for me to get down and open the door for her. And she bolts—straight to where I know she’s headed: the terrace.

When I catch up, she’s standing in the mess I left behind, her back to me, just taking it all in. The fairy lights I’d yanked down, the smashed projector, the untouched food and her favourite carrot cake scattered across the floor, the crushed cans of beer, and the broken swing—all under the quiet glow of stars. It looks like the remnants of a storm, both outside and within.

"The night didn’t last long," I say, voice soft, letting each word carry. "Because my date never showed up."

She stiffens but doesn’t turn.

"I hired the Indian chef... because chicken tikka is our favorite. I picked a rom-com because I know how much she loves a good laugh after a long day. And if she wasn’t in the mood to watch a movie, there was also an option to sit on the swing and spend the night stargazing. Just to enjoy the little things and quiet company. Because I know... how much she appreciates these small things."

Silence.

"I dressed up," I continue, walking closer, "because I saw her getting dressed up. Though, to be fair, the original plan was a casual dinner in our night clothes with our baby Bear."

I let the words sit in the air between us, waiting, hoping she’ll turn.

"And in case you’re wondering, I didn’t get a kiss," I say, voice softer now. "No dessert, either... because the only person I wanted to share it with was nowhere to be found."

There’s a hitch in her shoulders, subtle, like she’s fighting her own response. For a second, I think she might actually turn. But she doesn’t. She’s still there, unmoving.

I take one last step, my hand pushing the hair away as I place a gentle kiss on her shoulder, "You know, Bunny," I say, barely a whisper now, "maybe you’re the only one who doesn’t realize who I was waiting for tonight."

Her breath catches, just the smallest reaction, but it’s enough. I lower my hand, letting it drop, giving her space. If she won’t turn around now, maybe she’s not ready. But at least... I’ve said it.

And then she turns....

With tears in her eyes....
