YIREN’S POV

"Yes, it was ’supposed’ to be everything you said just now... but the truth is, we’ve crossed beyond that, Bunny. What now? Run from each other? Hide?"

His words crashing through the walls I’ve tried so hard to keep intact. None of us can deny it anymore—whatever this is between us is far from casual.

When I’m with him, time slips by like a blink of an eye. But when he’s away, every goddamn second feels like an eternity.

Like today. When I didn’t get to go home, I went crazy, just for not being near him. It feels like I’m suffocating, trying to keep my emotions in check when every fiber of my being is screaming to let go.

His eyes searching mine with a look that says everything. This spark between us? It’s not one-sided.

’Yiren, if it wasn’t for your fucked-up genes, what would you have done?’ My inner self questions, and the answer comes without hesitation.

’I’d have wasted no time, accepted my heart, and dived into this unknown territory with him by my side.’

But that’s not reality.

"W-we cannot be with each other," I say, my voice breaking, "My decision is final. I want to go back."

His eyes darken, and I see the muscles in his jaw tick, like he’s leashing a beast. "The fuck I’ll let you go."

"Our agreement says no—"

"Fuck the agreement. Fuck everything," he growls, his voice rough, raw, like he’s losing control. "I don’t give a damn, Yiren. Not when I know we are on the same page."

"NO WE ARE NOT!" And then, it slips out of me—the words I’ve been hiding, the ones I’m terrified to admit even to myself.

"I don’t believe in love! I don’t believe in forever! I don’t believe in anything!"

Jun’s grip tightens on my hand, his thumb digging into my skin. "If you don’t believe in love, then why are you so heartbroken? Why is it hurting you as much as it’s hurting me? Why did you run to me in the rain, without a care in the world?"

I can’t answer him.

I stand up and step out of the shower and peel off my wet panties and wrap myself in a towel. I’m about to step out of the bathroom when Jun’s voice stops me in my tracks.

"I love how much you’re comfortable around me, Bunny. No inhibitions."

"It’s like a gyno visit. The first time they say, ’Take off your panties,’ you feel shy. By the tenth visit, you don’t even bother to wear one."

Jun chuckles.

He steps in front of me, "Tell me what’s stopping you?"

I gulp, "Nothing."

"That’s bullshit. I know you better than yourself. You’re straight-up rejecting me, but the Yiren I know loves to explore, to see where the road takes her. Hell, she even date that good for nothing Chris. Am I worst?"

No. There is no comparison between them. But dating Chris was easy as I know chances of feelings getting involved was in negatives. But with Jun? I had my suspicions from day one.

"Don’t complicate things," I mutter, stepping back.

He steps close, "Too late already."

I step back again, "From here on, I’m going to start looking for casual hookups. You should too."

He steps close again, "Sure bunny, but don’t blame me when he mysteriously vanishes and ends up in pieces in a dump yard."

The way he says it, with that unsettling calmness, sends goosebumps breaking out over my skin.

He grins, his smile sinister, and for a brief moment, I don’t see Xion as the king of the underworld—I see him. "Let anyone touch what’s mine, and I’ll make sure his screams echo for eternity."

I freeze at his words, the intensity behind them sinking deep into my chest.

"So I’m yours?"

"Yes," he says, a simple, final answer that makes my heart skip a beat.

I take a deep breath. Jun is the most stubborn man I’ve ever known. I know he won’t give up on this. He’ll follow me to the ends of the earth even if it means he gets hurt.

"What do you want, Jun?"

He takes a step closer, and cups my face as he gently wipes a tear from my cheek—one I didn’t even realize had fallen.

"A chance," he says, his voice barely audible, full of sincerity. "Let me date you. Let me prove you. Please."

"What if I still want to leave after that?"

"That sounds like you have made up your mind. I want a fair chance."

Because it’s true. More tears fell, and he gently wipes them.

Before I can say anything, a knock at the door breaks the moment.

Jun walks over to open it. "Soup for you," Suyin says, holding a tray, her expression softening as she peeks inside.

Her gaze falls on me—dressed only in a towel, hair damp, with tears still visible on my face—then quickly shifts her gaze to Jun, who stands in a bathrobe. Her cheeks flush a deep shade of red. I’m not sure what she’s thinking, but I’m certain she’s jumping to conclusions.

"Um... also," Suyin continues, trying to ease the tension, "A nurse from the hospital dropped off a fluffy black dog at our door. She said he was crying and making a ruckus in the hospital while searching for his ’hoomans.’"

My heart drops. "Ah, shit. Bear!"

Bear bursts into the room. He slides between Jun’s legs, running straight toward me. I scoop him up, and he lets out a loud cry, burrowing his face into my arms. He occasionally barks, as if scolding me for forgetting him, his small body shaking with excitement and relief.

"Sorry. I’m so sorry."

"Bear, move. Let us sleep," Jun grumbles, trying to nudge the dog off the bed.

But Bear isn’t having it. He lets out a series of loud barks, jumping, digging his paws as if declaring his rightful ownership of the bed. He sprawls out, ignoring us as he vents his frustration for being left alone earlier. The little guy has mountain high tantrum.

Jun and I exchange glances, our eyes drift toward the lonely couch sitting across the room.

One, two, three...

We both take off toward it, but I’m slower, Jun has already claimed the spot, sprawling out with a triumphant grin. And I land over him.

"Nice. Let him sleep on the bed. The couch is better for us anyway," he says, holding me in place like I have nowhere else to go.

"I’m not sleeping like this," I try to wriggle, "Go away."

"Why? I’m a good pillow."

"Jun."

"Bunny."

"You can’t expect us to sleep like this," I protest weakly.

"Why not? You weigh nothing. And I sleep better with you in my arms." he gently presses my head against his chest. The steady rhythm of his heart against my ear is soothing, grounding me.

I let out a yawn, the exhaustion from the day finally catching up to me.

"But this is wrong--" my body is already giving in to the comfort of his embrace.

"Nothing is wrong," Jun pats me, his voice low, filled with that calm confidence that always seems to quiet my fears.....
