JUN’S POV

It’s barely 7 a.m., and Bear is once again dancing on my head like a tiny, furry tornado. I groan, pushing him away, about to roll over to get some more sleep, but then my arm instinctively pulls Yiren closer to me.

I bury my face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply. The sweet scent of strawberries, mixed with something uniquely hers, fills my senses, and I can’t help but let out a contented sigh.

It’s funny how Yiren decided to let go of one rule out of three. So Yeah, no sex, no kisses, but instead of sleeping in separate rooms we are sleeping together. To save on electricity bill. That’s what she said to convince herself but we both know the truth that being apart was a torture to us.

But I didn’t call her on that.

Beggars can’t be choosers and I’ll take whatever she’s offering me.

Sure, it’s torturous sometimes—sleeping next to her, holding her in my arms, feeling every inch of her warmth, but knowing I can’t do anything about it. But this, this is our own special brand of hell and heaven mixed together.

"Don’t go," I growl.

She shifts a little, trying to get out of bed, but I tighten my grip on her waist, refusing to let go. The mornings with her are my favorite. The quiet, the intimacy, the way her skin feels against mine.

"Phone. It’s vibrating somewhere," she pats around the bed, under the pillow and blankets before finally locating it. "Hello."

"Jun, baby—"

she suddenly pulls the phone away from her ear, checks it and then give me a murderous glare that’s typically reserved for me a look that could melt ice. "What?"

"A woman’s asking for Jun babyyyyy—"

she throws the phone at me, and climbs off me by deliberately pressing a hand flat over my morning wood, to emphasize her point she’s pissed.

Oh man, does that hurt. Like, seriously hurt. The last thing I need at this moment is to feel like I’ve been caught doing something wrong, especially when all I’ve done is wake up to a cute girl and a needy dog.

"HEY MOM,"

Yiren pauses, looks over her shoulder, and face palms herself before running inside the bathroom. I wait until the glass turned foggy.

Silly.

"Who was she? And how dare you miss the family dinner yesterday, Feng Junjie? Give me a reason so I don’t come over to your place and whoop your azz!"

I let out a deep breath, "Calm down gorgeous, this much anger is not good for your health."

I didn’t show up because, well, my asshole brothers decided to play the family card. They thought they could make me talk to them under the guise of a family dinner. I’m not stupid. Six weeks have passed since the fire and I’m still pissed they didn’t tell me despite me asking them again and again.

And I’m not ready to forgive them any time soon. Not when I’ve supported them blindly in their love chase. If they don’t understand how serious I am by now, then that’s their problem.

"How’s the most beautiful woman on this planet?" After my bunny, I mentally add.

"Pissed. Angry. And very upset."

Oh, I can feel the heat building. The little dragon of the family is breathing fire.

"You damn punk, whatever you did, fix it! She’s taking out her anger on me!"

I can’t help but chuckle. "Hi, Dad."

"Talk to my son like that again, and I’ll make you sleep on the couch for an entire month!"

"Sorry, babe. I was just—okay, okay... I’m going," Dad mumbles, probably after being shown one of Mom’s signature eye looks. The one that used to work on everyone but now only on Dad.

I laugh to myself, feeling a little lighter despite everything. My dad is a scaredy-cat when it comes to Mom. But he literally worships the ground she walks on. "You sound so cute when you defend me. Does he know you love me more than him?"

She scoffs, but I can hear the affection in her voice. "All you boys are a real pain in my ass. I want to—" Her words dissolve into a groan. "I can’t believe I’ll see this day when I’ll be asked to meddle between my sons."

"It’s nothing to meddle, Mom. Jianyu and Shishi know what they did."

"Yeah, they told me. But the question is," she pauses, sounding more serious now, "do you really love her to the extent to fight with your brothers?"

"Yes. Undoubtedly. With her, I feel safe, like I can breathe in a way I never could before. She’s the one who sees all the parts of me—even the ones I’ve tried to hide. With her, I don’t have to pretend. I can just be myself. She’s worth it, Mom."

I hear a soft sigh from her side. "And she? Does she love you equally?"

I hesitate. "I have no answer to that. I can feel she has deep feelings too, but something’s holding her back. I’ve seen the way she looks at me, how she cares for me, even how she cries for me. But I don’t know what’s keeping her at a distance. I just... I’m hoping she’ll tell me what’s going on in her head, so we can work on it together. But Mom, she’s the best! If you meet her, you’d fall for her too. She’s just... her."

Mom snickers, "Oh Jun, you are a gone case just like your dad and brothers. Whatever it is holding her back, I’m sure she won’t be able to keep resisting you for long. You’ve always been my stubborn baby, and I’m sure you’ll convince her."

"Damn right. I’ll tie her to me if I have to."

"Are you happy, baby?" Her voice came heavy, as if she’s holding herself from crying. She has a guilt for me that I almost lost my life because of her, that’s why she gets emotional when the matter concerns me. But I don’t hold her responsible for anything. It was not her but the situation that she was in.

Yiren walks out of the bathroom just then and goes over to our walk-in closet, and Bear follows her.

"She’s here. I’ll talk to you—"

"Answer the damn question or I’ll send your dad to your place to sleep with you."

Damn it. "Yes."

"Yes, what?"

I peek into the walk-in closet, Yiren is pretending to search for something but I know her attention is on me. And Bear’s too as if he’s understanding everything damn thing.

"Yes." I whisper.

"Louder!"

"Mom, please—"

"DINGXIONG YOU’RE GOING TO SLEEP AT JUN’S HOUSE—"

"YES! I’M HAPPY! DON’T SEND DAD HERE."

I hear Mom’s laugh on the other end, "Oh sweetie, I hope she heard that. And I hope you bring her to meet me soon."

"You are a devil. May Dad tires you tonight."

"Jun!"

"Bye gorgeous."

The line clicks off, and I can’t help but sigh in relief. As much as I love her, the emotional rollercoaster with my mom is enough to exhaust anyone. But now, it’s just me and Yiren.

I walk up to her and place an arm over the cupboard, trapping her between. "You call your mom gorgeous?"

I point a finger at myself, "All this is inherited from her. So you can guess, how gorgeous she is."

She rolls her eyes, "Definitely not modest."

"Nope. I know how you ogle me."

"Of course I ogle you. It’s hard not to when you try so hard to be noticed."
