Yiren’s pov....

"What do you mean Alzheimer’s is your future?"

His arms tighten around me like a warmth in a chilly winter, comforting me in the middle of turmoil.

"This disease is running in my mom’s family for generations. My mom, grandmama, grandmom’s sister... they all died from it." I’m trembling, he takes the coffee mug from my hand and puts it on the floor. " I have a 50% chance of getting it. Mom got me and Ning tested after she was diagnosed. Ning isn’t carrying the faulty gene but I am."

I’m waiting.

Locking myself into the depths of his eyes.

Waiting for him to kick me from his lap, lash at me, or worse cut off all the ties with me.

I may now get his forever but I want his friendship, but I’ll understand if he refuses that.

He wipes my tears which I don’t even know is flowing free from my eyes. I lean into his touch—warm, carrying, gentle.

"Are you saying you are refusing us just because of the uncertainty of the future?"

"It’s not uncertain, but a harsh truth. 50% is 100% in my case. You’ve seen what Mom became, how it took everything from her, piece by piece. Papa’s not even... He’s like a walking ghost. It’s a curse, Jun."

"Yiren, I don’t give a damn about the future. No one can predict it. I’m a man who lives in the present. We can’t live our lives based on what might happen. The only thing I know is that my present is you."

I look away, unable to face him, but then his hand is on my neck, pulling me back to him. His touch is firm, his eyes locked onto mine, and the intensity in his gaze takes my breath away.

"Even if the chances were 100%, I don’t care," he says, voice low but insistent. "What if, 20 years from now, this disease never triggers? What if you stay healthy? Would you regret depriving us of a beautiful future together because of some words written on a piece of paper?" His words hit me like a slap.

Yes. I have thought about it. But then I remind myself of the number of deaths my family has seen.

"I can’t fool myself with that," I choke out. "You deserve a long, healthy life with a life partner. You deserve someone who can protect your heart which still has a little child alive," I place a hand over beating heart, "--Someone who can be by your side, to raise children with. I’ve seen how you look at Yuyu and Lan. You want a daughter, right?"

He laughs bitterly, the sound so heavy it breaks my heart. "So the woman who truly understands me is telling me to find someone else? So, basically, once more I’m getting rejected because ’she’ doesn’t believe in me."

My eyes narrow, "That’s not what I mean."

"Oh, but it is," I tried to cup his face but he shook my hand off, his eyes rimmed red, "You think like all those women that I’m no more than a spoilt heir. I’m going to back down just because things might get hard. That I’d leave you if you ever get sick? It would have hurt less had you stabbed me instead." His words sting, but I don’t want to fight him.

"Jun—"

"Just answer one question—if the roles were reversed. Would you have left me?"

I press my lips. I have no answer to that or more like I cannot answer. Over the past few months I have spent with this man, I know for a fact there is no better person in this world than him. And I’ll stick by his side in thick and thin.

His eyes soften, but there’s still a hint of pain in them. "Your silence is your answer, Bunny," he pecks my lips, "A single day of happiness with you is worth more to me than a lifetime of empty moments without you."

I swallow hard. How is it that he can say all this? How is it that he still wants me despite everything?

"Jun, Please."

"You can’t push me away, Yiren. No matter what happens, I’m here. And I’m not going anywhere. Not now, never. I’ll get a team of the best doctors. I’ll put all the damn money in Alzheimer’s research to find a cure. But no way on Earth I’m letting you give up on us."

My heart thumps at his words.

"I don’t want to hurt you."

"You’ll hurt me more by leaving me." His voice is firm, unyielding. "Don’t you understand? I’m not asking for some perfect dreamy life. I’m asking for you. All of you. Even if it comes with challenges, pain, bitter-sweet moments.... Give me all."

I shake my head, "But I’m not perfect, Jun. You deserve—"

He shakes his head, "No. What I deserve is you. You’re all I need. My most important family."

"But—"

"Have faith in us. I won’t let you fall." He grabs me by the waist, "Let’s go. Our kid is waiting for us at home. Rui called me earlier to inform me Bear is being a menace in our absence."

He is changing the topic. It’s like a discussion end for him. Jun is a born protector, he can die and kill for his family. And somehow I’ve become his most important family.

Throughout the ride back home, Jun didn’t let my hand go even for a minute.

Bear ran out of the door like a tornado on lose the moment our car entered through the gates. Our kid. That’s what Jun calls him now. He even started addressing me as mommy and himself as daddy.

As we get out of the car Bear crushes himself in Jun’s arms, wiggling his tail, giving kisses.

I turn to leave but a firm grip on my wrist pulls me in a family hug. "Bear, mommy is getting naughty. She wants to leave us. Punish her with kisses and hugs."

I chuckle, welcoming Bear’s aggressive kisses and whines.

Going away from Jun and Bear is not something I want to experience, but when I see his smile all for me, the fear tightens its grip around me.

I’m sorry, Jun, but this has to end.

Jun stops, turns his head eerily at me, "No it won’t."

Can he read my eyes? Hear my thoughts? Or am I that obvious?
