JUN’S POV

Hell breaks loose the second I hear her voice crack and the line goes dead. My mind races, my heart pounding hard enough that it’s all I can hear as I speed through these winding forest roads. Each time I try calling her, the signal drops. Perfect, just perfect. A mental note: pay a visit to the owner of this Imperial telecommunications company and make sure they understand the concept of "coverage."

Beside me, Bear lets out a bark at the road, "I know, buddy. I’m going as fast as I can."

Finally, I catch sight of her truck—a little beat-up thing in white, parked on the roadside. But then I spot her. And my blood boils.

WTF!

She’s out of the car, completely disregarding what I told her, chatting with some random guy. He’s tall, smug, waving his hands as he talks, and worse yet, she’s laughing. Really laughing, like he’s the funniest man alive. She never laughs at my jokes like that.

With me she’s always ready to bite my head off.

My tires squeal as I brake hard and jump out, ignoring Bear’s complaints that he’s still buckled, "Stay in."

"Yiren, are you okay?" My eyes dart over her, looking for any sign of injury.

"I’m fine."

"Your voice on the phone—before the network cut out—" I glance at the guy, who raises his hand in a mock apology.

"That’s my fault, really. I apologize for giving you a scare, Yiren." He names her as if she’s his friend. Ha, her only friend is me, Mr.

Tall, sharp jaw, designer stubble, dressed head-to-toe in Prada, and leaning a little too close to her. I hate him already.

She touches his forearm, "Hey, it’s fine. All’s well that ends well."

I’m not a jealous person. But right now? Bite me. The sight of her so at ease with him has my jaw tightening. I pull her close, draping an arm around her shoulders. With a quick kiss on her temple, I stake my claim, hoping it’s clear enough for him. She’s off limits.

"Right. This is Kun Jie, an investment banker and the kind man who tracked me down after I left my camera at the electronics store."

Kun? As in Kun the Kunt? The subtitle practically flashes on my face, and Yiren catches it instantly, pressing down on my toes with a warning glare.

"Hello, Kunt— I mean, Kun. I’m Feng Junjie." I extend my hand with a smile that’s all teeth, squeezing his hand firmly. He meets my grip, and his jaw ticks ever so slightly. Good. Strong opponent. But he’s in my territory now.

"Mr. Feng,"

I don’t give him the slightest opening, keeping my other arm firmly around her. Yiren, meanwhile, rubs her forehead as if she’s already exhausted by this encounter.

"Well, I’d better be off." he throws me a sidelong glance. "Take care, Yiren. See you on Sunday, hopefully without... an audience."

Oh, Sunday? Cute. He thinks there’ll be a Sunday after I’m done with her on Saturday night. I’ll make sure she’s far too tired to leave the bed, and if she dares, Bear’s got an extra clingy side I know how to awaken.

"Next time, she won’t need saving," I say, keeping my smile calm. Kun gives a quick nod before heading to his flashy red McLaren.

"What’s he doing here? You promised you wouldn’t meet him. And leaving your camera behind? You don’t even have a camera. Oh, and explain Sunday."

"Wow... chill, Juju. First, I never promised I wouldn’t meet him. Second, yes, I do have a camera now. And third, he was just being polite and wants to discuss a few things. That’s why I’ll be meeting him on Sunday. Must you act like this?"

"Polite?" I raise an eyebrow, "That look wasn’t politeness. The guy was practically picturing the kids with you. You’re not going anywhere on Sunday. We’ll have Disney marathon."

She pinches my cheeks, and then shakes my face hard, just because she could. "Mr. Jealous thinks he can stop me from meeting whoever I want?"

"I’m not jealous. Just... protective," I won’t accept the truth to her. She won’t let me live with it.

"Oh yes, Uncle Juju is jealous!" she shimmies her shoulders, doing a little dance around me.

"I’m not," I transfers her things to my car, all the while watching her teasing me instead of helping. God, she carries an entire army of tech products.

"Bear, don’t you agree Jealous Daddy looks so hot?" Bear barks as if he’s completely on her side. Great, even my dog is siding with her.

But she finds me hot. What else?

"Just making sure you don’t add another questionable man to your life," I say, trying not to laugh.

She puts Bear on the bonnet, then sticks her hip out and does a little twerk. "I already added a very jealous man to my life," Bear copies her, wiggling his little doggy butt.

"Jesus, don’t twerk in the middle of the road!"

"Tell me, what if I kissed Kun—"

"You wouldn’t dare," I spank her ass, unable to control.

She laughs, triumphant. Ah fk, I’m tricked.

"You’re annoying." I toss her and Bear into the car, ignoring her victorious grin as we drive back, fully aware that I’m utterly whipped for this crazy, brilliant woman.

"Btw, I’m confiscating your truck. From tomorrow you are taking one of my cars."

"Jun! What did my poor truck ever do to you?"

"It stranded you in the middle of nowhere with Kunt, that’s what." I turn into my multifloored garage, "Go on, pick one. Tomorrow, Huo will have it out and ready for you."

"What if I don’t?"

"Then use public transport. But not the truck."

She huffs, arms crossed and full pout mode engaged. Her hair is loose, one stubborn strand tickling her cheek, and she doesn’t even bother to tuck it back as she scowls at my car collection. So cute and fiesty. "Please don’t make that face for that piece of—"

"Say it , and I won’t let you anywhere near my coochie."

"Piece of the world’s best drivable car... dream car... precious car."

"Hm, better."

"But—"

"For my mental piece please pick one. One less tension and I’ll live longer."

"Only if you accept you were jealous." Her lips twitch. Only she can bring me to my knees. I don’t know why, but yep, that’s my current reality.

"Fine. Jealous."

I pull into the garage, gesturing for her to take her pick, but all I get is an endless chorus of "No. No. Nope. Definitely not. No way." And then it clicks.

I drive us over to my least favorite section, where my GMC Hummer’s parked. Before I can even pull brake, she’s already out, running to it like a kid on Christmas. "This is awesome!" she climbs in and testing out every button and dial, her grin stretched wide.

She jumps down and wraps her arms around me in a huge hug. "Thanks, Jun. I’ll keep it safe, and return it to you in one piece... when we’re done."

A shadow passes over her face, and mine too. I realize it’s not only me but she too dreads the time when we go our separate ways.

"Maybe we stay together forever." I don’t know why I said but I did it.

She pulls away from my arm, "That’s not happening."

"Why? Am I that obnoxious to you?"

"It’s not you, it’s me. The problem is me."

What does she mean by that? I want to ask but she has already completely withdrawn herself, and pushing her for an answer seems pushing the boundaries.
