The smell of oil, rubber, and grease greeted me as stepped into the secret garage beneath my office building, calming the chaos in my mind caused by recent events.

I glanced at the blueprint pinned to the wall, plans for the engine spread out like a battlefield strategy. I had been working for years with limited knowledge and learned the complications of making a car from scratch, staying late, pouring sweat and effort into perfecting it. But it still wasn’t enough. There were tweaks I needed to make—things weren’t running smoothly yet.

I turned the key; the engine roared to life, shaking the garage walls. The familiar vibration moved through me as I floored the pedal. The tires burned against the pavement, dark smoke filling the air as the speedometer climbed.

The anticipation built inside me as I pressed harder, watching the needle climb, waiting for that sweet 200mph mark. But then... the engine sputtered, a loud metallic cough, and the speedometer fell, crashing back down toward zero.

"Dammit!" I cursed under my breath, slamming the door as I got out.

The engine was overheating again. I yanked the fire extinguisher off the wall and sprayed it under the hood, dousing the smoke. Frustration knotted in my chest as I kicked the tire, watching the steam evaporate into the night.

Yiren: Any tips for the next round? Trying not to freak out here.

Bruce: Don’t face plant yourself.

Yiren : *Squinting eye emoji*. You are such a help. Thanks for the brilliant suggestion.

Yiren: You and this Queen Elizabeth thing! I swear one day I’ll find out who you really are. Batman’s true identity won’t stay hidden for long!

Bruce : I’m shaking in my boots. You don’t want to know, trust me.

Yiren: You’re mysterious AND modest AND talented. Deadly combo. Jun is lucky to have you. Maybe when I finally find out who you are, I’ll bake you a cake and try to poach you into my company!

I laughed at that, my voice echoing in the garage.

Bruce: Such a lucrative offer. Aren’t you afraid I’ll tell about your motives to the boss?

Yiren: Wow, you really are grumpy. It was Jun who gave me the number, he knows the risks better. Devil emoji*

Yiren: But I’m definitely coming for you, Batman.

The way she casually calls me Jun feels so different. Cozy. Nice.

Bruce: That sounds so wrong.

Yiren: *Multiple laughing emoji* I see you have the same corrupt mind as me. Hm.... I see a potential in us becoming a team.

Bruce: But you said you are broke.

Yiren: Currently. I’ve accepted a few small projects in downtown. By the time I get funds for business, this should do.

My brows furrows. Downtown is not a safe area. The crime rates are high and she has no one to back up.

Bruce: Downtown doesn’t sound nice.

My heart doesn’t settle at the mention of her going to the downtown. But what right do I have to stop her?

Suddenly, my phone rings. Zian’s name flashes on the screen.

"What?" I snap, not in the mood for anything right now.

"Don’t tell me you’re bailing on the weekly sparring again, Jun," Zian’s voice comes through the speaker, a mix of amusement and irritation. "You’ve already missed two sessions. Get your ass to the gym. No excuses."

I roll my eyes, glancing at the engine. It’s still smoking slightly, and I know I need to spend more time working on it. But, truth be told, I could use the break to get out of my head.

"Fine," I mutter, locking up the garage. "But if you’re looking to get beaten up, at least be prepared."

Zian laughs. "Bring it on, little brother."

I get back to Yiren and Bruce’s chat with Yiren’s answer waiting for me.

Yiren: I don’t have friends. This girl is a solo army *Strong bicep emoji*

Yiren: I’ll send you the rough presentation once it’s ready.

Bruce: Take my suggestion. Don’t go alone.

Yiren: Ok sure.

No friends? She had said this earlier as well. A woman like Yiren with no friends doesn’t make any sense. Her personality speaks lots of friends, parties, fun... but other than Ning, her sister, I have never seen anyone with her.
