JUN’S POV

"Juju," Yiren drawls, and my traitorous heart skips a beat, fluttering like a bird caught in a storm. "I know you’re not sleeping! I heard you talking to someone. So open this goddamn door, or I’m taking your favorite car on a long drive."

My head shoots up from under the blanket like a groundhog spotting its shadow. "You wouldn’t dare!"

"Try me."

She’s bluffing... right?

"I’ve got the keys in my hand."

This woman is pure chaos. Beautiful, infuriating chaos. Reluctantly, I shuffle to the door and open it. There she stands, in blue shorts and a loose tee, holding Bear like he’s a grumpy baby. His half-asleep expression makes it clear he was rudely awakened and is not appreciating it.

"I was sleeping."

"Liar," she push past me, eyes scanning the room. "I heard a woman’s voice."

She’s jealous. That’s a good sign, right? Maybe I should make her listen to what Alexa told me about love.

"Alexa, tell Yiren who I was talking to."

"You were talking to me. It was about—"

"Okay, stop. No need to go into details!" I cut Alexa off, before she bust my cover.

I watch her move around the room, picking up random things and putting them back down, clearly restless. Bear, still in her arms, gives me a look as if to say, Dude it’s 2 am, why is she dragging me like this?

"So, are you going to tell me why you’re acting like a weirdo tonight?" She sits on the armrest of the couch, holding Bear.

"Just...thinking about things... And why are you calling me a weirdo when you are carrying a dog like a toddler at 2 a.m.?"

"Work stuff? At 2 a.m.? With Alexa?"

"She’s very knowledgeable." I mumble, retreating to the couch and cocooning myself in my blanket like it’s armor.

"Jun, are you okay?" she presses a hand against my forehead, then slides down to check my throat, that little touch sending my heart into overdrive.

"Yep. All good."

"Why are you sleeping here? I was waiting for you in the room."

Wait—she was waiting for me? My heart skips a beat. Do I tell her? Hey, Yiren, it’s a different kind of fever—I’m lovesick. Would you like to throw that "no love" nonsense out the window and give us a shot? Promise I won’t disappoint. I’ve been groomed by my wife-slave brothers, and I come with excellent references.

"Told you, just work." I say, brushing off her concern.

"Oh," she murmurs, squeezing Bear tightly and pulling him close to her chest. That’s when it hits me—she’s using Bear for emotional support because I’m failing to provide it. She’s been through hell today, and here I am, selfishly consumed by my own feelings. It’s time I put it aside and give attention to my girl.

"Yiren," I pull her toward me. She lets Bear go, and before I know it, she’s straddling my lap, her head resting against my shoulder. Her weight, her warmth—it feels so right, so grounding, like the missing piece of a puzzle finally slotting into place.

That’s also the first time I see Bear running away from us.

"Want to talk?" I ask, my hand instinctively rubbing gentle circles on her back.

"Today, when I was with Bruce... at one point, I realized if I died tonight, nobody would miss me. I’d just be one insignificant soul who left the earth."

Her words pierce through me like a dagger, and I stiffen. She lifts her head, her tear-filled eyes locking onto mine. "I mean—Ning would be sad. Papa might feel something, but that’s it. They’d cry for a day or two, bring flowers to my grave once a year, and then move on."

"Stop," I brush away the tear that escapes down her cheek. "I wouldn’t have let anything happen to you."

"Would you have missed me?" she asks, her voice so quiet, so vulnerable, it nearly shatters me.

I don’t have an answer—not one that feels adequate. The very thought of her being gone, of her absence from my life, terrifies me to the core. I can’t say it, not yet, so I let my actions speak for me.

I pick her up, holding her close as she wraps her arms tightly around my neck, clinging to me like I’m the only anchor in a storm. She buries her face in my shoulder, her breath warm against my skin.

"I would miss you," I answer, putting her on bed, and lying next to her. "More than I can ever put into words."

She turns and hugs me tighter, covering her face in my chest and in that moment, I know—I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her, to make her feel cherished. Even if it means confronting my own fears, my own denial. Even if it means baring my soul and facing her refusal.

"I want to see the entire world. And go to Disneyland once,"

My brows furrow in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

There’s no answer, just silence. I glance down to find her already asleep, her breathing even and her face serene, as if all the burdens of the world had momentarily lifted.

I sigh, brushing a stray lock of hair from her cheek. She was roaming around the house at 2 a.m., wide-eyed and restless, and yet all she needed to fall asleep was... this? Me, holding her in my embrace? The realization is both humbling and disarming.

"Don’t miss me," she murmurs, her voice barely audible, slurring. "I’ll not remember anything... or you. A curse and a blessing."

My chest tightens, but then she mumbles again, her words nearly swallowed by sleep. "I want to see the entire world. And go to Disneyland once."

I tilt my head, puzzled, and then it clicks—the medicine Suyin gave her. Suyin mentioned it might make her groggy, even a little loopy.

"You’re something else," I whisper, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Disneyland, huh? I’ll take you. You’ll see everything. You’ll have everything."
