Unfortunately, mine is mixed, catering to none. She suggested me to change the characters and pick a side. So from now onwards, Elena’s character is Mu Yiren. Abella is Mu Ning. And Luke is Sun Kai. It was actually demotivating when only 2-3 people were reading the entire day whereas it takes me six hours to write.

I have changed the character names in other Chapters as well. Elena/Yiren’s stepfather will continue to be a Spanish character and therefore she knows the language. I punch in Zian’s number again while waiting for the damn elevator which was coming up at a snail’s pace, the phone pressed to my ear as I pace the space outside it. Bear trailing my heels like a well-behaved boy as if he understands the situation.

"Z," I snap the moment he picks up, "What’s Ning’s condition? What hospital?"

"She’s stable, for now," Zian replies, his tone tense. "But the little information I got from Yiren earlier, I can tell this hospital isn’t equipped to handle her case. They’re dragging their feet on forwarding her files, and the head of emergency is bound by rules—doing just enough to stabilize her until insurance clears. But anything beyond that requires approval."

The doors slide open, but it’s like the world’s moving in slow motion. Every inch of me is tense with the rising anger. "Fk the insurance! Prepare for airlift. I’m bringing her to your hospital. Now."

"Got it," Zian says, his voice firm. "I’ll be ready on my end."

I jam my thumb against the parking button, but the elevator’s descent still feels torturously slow. The weight of everything crashes down on me as the doors slide shut again. I’m too late—too late to help Yiren, too late to even know about Ning’s accident until now. Fk. I failed. Again.

The phone buzzes in my hand, but it’s not the one I want to see lighting up. No, it’s Zian texting me the hospital details.

I punch in another number immediately, barely waiting for the connection.

"Bro, Yiren’s sister was in a car accident, she’s pregnant. I need her moved to Langone immediately."

"Got it," comes the swift reply. "I’m dispatching the chopper and a medical team now. Send me the details."

Finally, the doors slide open again, and I bolt out of the elevator, rushing to my car, Bear catching up with my strides.

The moment I step into the emergency ward, the stench of antiseptic and despair hits me. It’s suffocating. Everything here is gloomy.

Kai’s in the middle of an argument with a nurse, his voice shaky, and desperate. His clothes were stained with blood. Jeez.

So much blood.

"Why haven’t you moved Ning to surgery yet?" he demands, his eyes wild with fear.

The nurse’s response is cold, and clinical. "We’re waiting for insurance clearance. Once we get it, we’ll proceed."

"She’s pregnant! Can’t you do anything without waiting for insurance?" Kai’s voice cracks, teetering on the edge of panic. "I have already deposited so much."

"If you want things to move faster, you can deposit the full amount in advance," the nurse replies, brushing him off like he’s an inconvenience. "Then you can apply for a refund later. It’s hospital policy. I can’t do anything."

"ENOUGH!"

My voice cuts through the noise, cold and hard as steel. I step forward, handing her my Amex, my eyes fixed on hers. "Charge everything to this. Prepare for discharge. We’re moving her to Langone. You have fifteen minutes."

The nurse stares at the card in her hand, clearly shaken. She opens her mouth to speak, but my patience is already wearing thin. I lean in, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl.

"Pray nothing happens to that woman," I warn, my eyes dark and unrelenting, "If something does, I’ll make sure there’s no hospital left here. Fourteen minutes."

Her face goes pale, and she nods quickly, scurrying away.

Kai turns to me, his voice trembling. "Mr. Feng—"

"Dr. Wang Shi and Dr. Zian will take over her case at Langone. She’ll be in the best hands now." I glance around the dingy hospital, the outdated machines, and the worn-out staff. Fk. How had they even been able to stabilize her here?

Kai follows my gaze, his eyes filled with fear as he peeks through the glass circle in the door marked ICU. Inside, Ning is hooked up to every machine imaginable, her face pale, her body still.

That doesn’t look good. At all.

"Where’s Ely?" I ask, scanning the room.

Kai’s expression tightens. "She... She left two hours ago to arrange for more money. We’ve burned through all our savings already."

I reach for my phone and dial Yiren’s number. Blocked. Fk. She blocked me.

I grind my teeth, dialing again, this time from Bruce’s number. The call is cut immediately.

Frustration boils over, and I run a hand through my hair. What the hell is she thinking, running around trying to get money when I’m right here?

’I don’t need your pity at the cost of my self-respect! I’ll rather sell my body first.’

Her words rang...

I send a quick message under Bruce’s name, hoping she’ll respond:

Bruce: Hey Ely, Call me back. It’s important.

No answer. Of course.

I clench my fists, looking at Kai who is still standing by the ICU door, his shoulders sagging. He’s holding it together, but just barely. I step toward him, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"She’ll be fine," I say, my voice firm, though I’m not entirely sure if I’m reassuring him or myself.

He nods, but his eyes betray the fear running deep. "Thank you, Mr. Feng... I don’t know how I’d repay....."

I say nothing. This isn’t about gratitude or money. This is about fixing something—anything—in the chaos that surrounds me.

"No need. Aunt Sofia was like my mom," I murmur, my voice softer now. "This is the least I can do for her daughter."

I step away from Kai, my eyes lingering on Ning through the small window. Time feels like it’s slipping through my fingers, and the urgency clawing at my chest tightens its grip.

I turn to the hospital staff, "SIX MINUTES!"

But through all the tension and noise, one thought keeps circling in my mind.

Where the fk is Yiren?

Hope she’s not doing anything reckless.

But fear is a bitch. It haunts you, and turns you desperate.

I cannot wait. I should not wait. So I called her, my tech genius sister-in-law, MeiMei. "Jun, Z told me. How is Ning?"

"Barely holding. Track Yiren’s number and find out her location. We had a fight last night and I said some mean things to her. Now she isn’t answering my call and has left the hospital to get money for Ning’s treatment."

"Oh Jun," I can hear the disappointment in her voice, "Give me ten minutes. I’ll get back to you."
