Jun’s POV

We finally have something to look at. A small hint, but a direction nonetheless. Meimei is searching for everything common between Valentina, Yiren, and Kristy—going as far back as their school days.

We have a theory—it was something done by Valentina, and Yiren was wrongly dragged into it, making her Yifan’s target. We also suspect that Valentina has a motive and might be cahooting with Yifan.

"I’ll be back. Need to use the washroom," she whispers in my ear.

I’m going through Yiren’s scout camp records when her phone rings. A message pops up at the top of her screen. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Dream Realtor (Mr. Xi): Hey, Yiren, sorry for the late message, but I wanted to inform you that the house rental agreement is ready.

Wtf. What house rental agreement?

"Hmm... Yiren and Valentina went out together to multiple places when they were friends?" Meimei says, eyes glued to the laptop screen as she hacks into Valentina’s Facebook account.

"We all know why Valentina was friends with Yiren. I’m more interested in who else was in Valentina’s circle. Can you check this?" Suyin asks Meimei.

"13k friends and 5k pictures. Let me run this through software and sort it out first," Meimei responds.

Bing. Another text.

Dream Realtor (Mr. Xi): The owner is ready to sign it next Monday, and you can move immediately after that. Let me know...

I know the password to Yiren’s phone to read the rest of the message, but I don’t need to. I already know what’s happening.

And here I thought she was going to give me a chance. Foolish.

She’s planning to move out. It’ll start with the house, and slowly she’ll move out of my life as well.

Of course, she doesn’t want me.

Just kill me. That’s a better option, Yiren.

I don’t want to live a bland life where you don’t exist to annoy me at every turn. I want the sweet, salty, tangy, spicy, bitter—all the flavors of life with you in it.

I don’t know what my dolls and brothers are discussing. I’ve already zoned out and want a break. So I grab my keys and phone, "Drop Yiren at home when you leave," I say to no one in particular, just announcing it.

And I turn.

"Why? Where are you going?"

"Jun?"

"Jun?"

Shishi and Zian have treatment options for Yiren. If the disease kicks in, they’ll monitor her throughout and won’t let it progress... hell, they even have a set plan on how we will conceive. IVF, where they’ll gene-test the embryo before the transfer.

I don’t know how else to convince her. Maybe I’m just not enough as a man to earn her trust.

"Jun?" Yiren stops me, holding my arm. Gosh, she’s looking so beautiful tonight that I can’t take my eyes off her. "Where’s your mind at? Everyone’s calling your name."

I peel her fingers off my arm. "I have some urgent work to do. Someone will drop you home. Don’t forget to drink milk before you sleep." I kiss her forehead, letting my lips linger a few extra seconds.

"You seem upset."

No. I’m sad. I want to cry.

The ache in my heart is killing me.

I feel her eyes on me as I leave. For a moment, I wish she’d run and hug me from behind and whisper that she loves me.

Wishful thinking.

Insecurities creep into my bones again.

"Do you have any fucking idea how scared we were when Mei tracked your location to this cliff?" Shishi yells in that big brother voice he only uses when we’ve really pissed him off.

I chuckle. It’s called Suicide Cliff, haha. I must have scared him a shit ton.

"Hey, bro, I love when you scold me in that voice. Do it again," I tip my bottle of whiskey in his direction. Oops, someone drank all the whiskey.

No problem. I stole three from Xion’s precious collection before coming here, haha.

It’s really quiet here. And sooooo boring. I miss the constant chatter of Yiren.

Yiren.

My sunshine.

"Jun?" Jianyu grabs my bottle of whiskey.

"No, no, not giving it. Go get your own." I tug my bottle to my chest.

"Shut up. Let’s go home." He hauls me to my feet, but I fall back down on my ass with a thump. "Jesus, how much have you drunk?"

I show him two fingers. Three. Two. Two.

All the air whooshes out of my lungs. My eyes close as someone throws water on my face like a whiplash.

"This should help you a little. Not sure how much." Suyin’s sweet but authoritative voice sounds next to me, and then I receive a few slaps on my cheeks, whipping my head left and right.

Another splash of water and more slaps.

"Stupid boy," Meimei slaps the back of my head.

Annabella and Chucky, haha.

Shishi and Jianyu haul me on their shoulders, grunting about my weight as they drag me to the car.

I love my family.

Aren’t they cute?

But I love Yiren more.

Isn’t she cute too?

At Jianyu and Meimei’s house

"Ow," I wake up with a swollen, painful jaw and an IV on my arm. My head hurts, but not as much as it should after I wasted myself completely. What time is it?

A glass of something yellow is pushed into my face. "Drink it."

I look up to see a very angry and pissed Shishi. "Hi, bro, you look so handsome."

"DRINK IT."

Nobody messes with angry Shishi. He’s a demon without horns and scales. I smell the funky liquid and realize it’s raw egg. Holy shit. I can’t drink this poop.

"Jianyu, help me," I plead.

Shishi says, and before I can question or run for my life, Jianyu straddles me, locking my limbs in a grip I can never fight against. Shishi forces open my jaw, pinches my nose, and shoves the shit down my throat.

Cough, cough.

I gag.

It’s horrible. Disgusting. Yuk.

"WTF!"

"Yeah, WTF," Shishi copies with sarcasm. I realize, apart from my brothers, my dolls are also in the room. Not the room, but Jianyu’s living room where I’m sprawled on the couch at an unholy angle and the center of attention.

Please tell me my kids didn’t see me in this condition.

"Now let’s talk about your last night’s crisis so we can get over with it and get on with our day."
