YIREN’S POV

It’s Suyin. I stare at it, willing myself not to answer.

I stare at it for a long moment, then let it ring out. I can’t talk to her. I don’t know what to talk.

And just then, as if the universe has a cruel sense of humor, I hear footsteps approaching. I turn to see Suyin walking toward me, her face soft with concern.

"I knew I’d find you here."

I don’t move. I stay rooted to the spot, my heart hammering in my chest. I feel like a coward.

"I’m sorry," I whisper, the tears threatening to fall again. "I’m so sorry."

Suyin steps up to me and wraps her arms around me. She’s warm. She smells like home.

"Shh. You don’t have to apologize. You’ve been through so much, Yiren. This was a conspiracy. You’re not to blame for this."

But I can’t stop myself. "I led this project. I’m responsible for this. It’s my fault. I lost everything."

Suyin rubs my back. "You’re not to blame. You’ll rebuild. You’ll do it again. I know you will."

But I can’t bring myself to believe her. I can’t. I look down at the charred remains of the house, feeling the weight of the loss all over again.

"I can’t do it," I whisper. "I don’t have the money. I don’t have the confidence. I can’t go back. Not after this."

"You can," Suyin says firmly. "I know you can. But you don’t have to do it alone."

I shake my head. "I can’t ask you for more, Suyin. I know you’ve given me so much already. Honey once proudly told me you are using your own savings to build this house and surprise Shishi."

Suyin’s bit her lips, it was subtle but I understood everything. Even if her husband is a billionaire Suyin is not the kind of woman who’d just use their husband’s money for things they want.

"I can’t let you give me more money. It’s already a blessing I’m n ot facing a law suit by you."

Suyin doesn’t falter. "It’s not about money, Yiren. It’s about you. You’re family. And family doesn’t give up on each other. You’re not alone in this."

But inside, I’m feeling broken. The weight of everything, of the fire, the loss, the uncertainty—it’s too much.

And just as I’m about to speak, I hear a voice I never expected.

"Bunny,"

I freeze. My heart skips a beat.

Jun.

It’s like time itself has stopped, and my breath catches in my chest.

This can’t be real. He’s supposed to be in New York, not here. Not standing in front of me.

But then I blink, and there he is still standing.

Jun. My Juju.

Standing in the middle of the burned-out remains of my dreams, looking as charming and handsome as ever. A mixture of disbelief and relief flooding over me. He’s here.

Bear, of course, doesn’t share my hesitation. He bolts across the charred ground, tail wagging furiously, tripping thrice on things while running. He jumps up at Jun, as if he’s been waiting for this moment for an eternity. Jun catches him effortlessly, letting Bear shower him with affection. Bear licks his face, his joy spilling over in excited little yips.

I can’t help but smile despite myself. The tension that has been eating at me for days is finally starting to fade, piece by piece.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

That’s my heart. Beating, racing, eager to jump out of my mouth.

Jun looks up at me, "You didn’t answer my calls. So I’m here to scold you."

"You—how—" I blink, and look around at the ruins, as if the universe will give me an answer. Daryl? New York?"

He shrugs nonchalantly, "I was bored in New York. No one was there to bicker with me, or drool over my hotness every morning."

I snort, a smile pulling at the corner of my lips despite the heaviness in my chest. "I never drool over your hotness. Bear’s hotter than you."

What a weird thing to say.

"Why are you really here?"

He looks at me, his expression serious now. "Because one of my investments is in trouble. I’ve put a lot of money into it, and I’m a businessman who hates losing. So here I am. To fix it."

Yeah, that bad investment is me. I’m the trouble.

"Daryl’s company," I whisper, "Yifan will take it in your absence."

Jun shrugs again. "Then I’d say it isn’t my time yet. When the time’s right, I’ll make it happen. Maybe wait a year or two more..."

"You’ve already waited ten years!" My nose burns, and I feel the tears threatening to spill. Control Yiren. Control yourself.

Jun notices. He always notices. He steps closer to me, his voice low but steady. "Priorities, Yiren. Right now, my priorities are different. I’ve learned from my wife-slave brothers that this particular ’priority’ is never to be put second."

My heart skips a beat.

"And what exactly are those priorities?"

He smiles, that familiar, warm smile that makes my knees weak. "You."

"You," I whisper again, the sob breaks free from my throat.

He opens his arms wide. "Come here."

I take a step forward, then another. And then, without thinking, I’m running to him. I crash into his arms, and for the first time in days, I allow myself to break. I let go of all the things I’ve been holding back—the pain, the grief, the fear—and I bury my face into his chest, the tears coming in waves.

Tight. His arms are strong around me, lifting me off the ground, holding me, comforting me in the world’s best-est hug.

I let myself crumble against him. I don’t care about anything else right now. Not the ruined house. Not the fire. Not the wreckage of my life. I’m in his arms, and for the first time in what feels like forever, I feel like all the problems have solved.
